Maureen Dowd hits one out of the park with this Op/Ed piece Boy, Oh, Boy (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/13/opinion/13dowd.html)

The normally nonchalant Barack Obama looked nonplussed, as Nancy Pelosi glowered behind.

Surrounded by middle-aged white guys — a sepia snapshot of the days when such pols ran Washington like their own men’s club — Joe Wilson yelled “You lie!” at a president who didn’t.

But, fair or not, what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You lie, boy!

I have come to the conclusion that many who keep trying to tell me otherwise, that they do not have any racial stake in their hatred of all things Obama, end up proving through their actions they do have race issues with Obama.

That asshole from SC proved to me without a doubt that Yes, race does play into this current hate of Obama. Much more than I believed before last week.

Yes I fear that both implicit and explicit racism may explain some individuals' dislike (and hatred) for all things related to Obama. In particular implicit racial biases (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/) could be to blame (even though they are difficult to detect).

Well, it's the only way to deal with them when they get all uppity.

It would be unfair to say every critic of Obama is motivated (wholly or partially) by racism, but it's more than fair to say that some of the most shrill, irrational, and crazy ones are motivated by racism of some sort. Remember, those crying "Socialism," "Marxism," "Fascism" are only saying that because they cannot say "nigger." Instead of talking about race, I'm afraid this nation is dancing around it.

What I'm realizing is there are many more blatant racists not only in the general population but also in politics. Hey that isn't a problem as far as I know, it isn't illegal to be a racist. I am just amazed that there are so many racists out there. The fuckhead shouting liar congressman from South Carolina is one. He is a racist.

So the fringe and nuts out there are not just wandering around the streets drooling xenophobes, the racist isn't just some stereotypical Hollywood southern version... it exists in mainstream America at all levels.

I knew it always existed but now I realize there is a portion of this Country who cannot stand to see an intelligent Black man succeed. They want to be loud about it, but are not sure how to yell it out... so they try by extreme measures just like that asshat congressman did on 9/9/09.
