Skier films himself being trapped under avalanche

Just watched a show called Raging Planet which highlighted avalanches and they are much more dangerous than some think.

Once settle they set in like cement all around the person making it impossible to dig out, while attempting to breath the snow creates an ice shield from the heat of your mouth, quickly depleting you of further oxygen.

Even though skiing on powder is tits, it is very dangerous in back country - fresh snow fall creates a larger layer on the weak layer and thus the most potential for avalanche.

If his rescuers dug out this persons legs first he would have likely died.

Tip of the day:

if ever caught in an Avalanche, before you dig yourself out, make sure you spit. it you let the spit drip out of your mouth, gravity will show you which way to dig. :cool:

I can't view the video because of this shitty fucking internet, but reading the story was interesting enough. I ski and am fairly good, but I have little serious off-piste experience and could never imagine being in a situation like this. For the time being I am happy tearing it up down the nicely coiffured pistes.
