oh hell yeah...(y)
Kid Koala gives you Slew:
Kid Koala is at the Nectar Lounge tonight which, honestly, would be enough to recommend it all on its own. The Kid made a name for himself as a left-field turntablist out of Quebec through deeply funky sound assemblies that flowed so smooth it made the art look easy. It isn't. He's a crate digger, an artist, and an unusually engaging performer. Tonight, he's utilizing all those skills plus one more: bandleader.
Some time ago, a couple of documentarians approached Koala and Dylan Frombach (aka Dynomite D, who has worked with the Beastie Boys and Money Mark) to soundtrack a new feature film that was in development. They agreed and began production, only to watch as years of work came crumbling down as the film collapsed and the release was canned.
"We had been working on the soundtrack for about 4 years," said Kid Koala by email. "We did the final mix with Mario Caldato Jr. at his studio in LA and later mastered the record in NY with Howie Weinberg. That was about a year ago. Even at that point it didn't look like the film would ever come together. But regardless of the whether or not the film was ever made, we knew we wanted people to hear the tracks."
He's serious about that too. You can download the Slew album here:

The album showcases Koala's distinctive cuts and scratches, but his Bullfrog history shines: the live version of Slew is burly, obviously the product of several heads in a room.
"When we started working on The Slew, we knew we wanted to make something that was heavy... something our Seattle skater friends would be in to," writes Koala. "I remember us asking ourselves: What would it sound like if the Bomb Squad produced a Black Sabbath record? Then we asked: what would it sound like if everything was assembled by hand on the turntables? "
For this tour, Koala--who owns a vinyl cutter--created 80 custom records; for hunters, this will be the ultimate white-label showcase.
"Originally, we would have had to do the show on 16 turntables with 5 or 6 DJs," Koala writes. "But I think this is going to be way crazier and a bit more exciting to watch."
The "this" is the former rhythm section of Australian rock band Wolfmother, Chris Ross and Myles Heskett.
"Both Dylan and I knew that if The Slew was ever going to tour with a live rhythm section, they would be a perfect fit," writes Koala. "We are very excited that they were down to do this tour with us even though all of our schedules will only permit it to happen in 9 cities."
After intensive rehearsals the show is now ready to go. It's a one-off tour, so tonight's your only night, Cinderella.
"This is a rock show," notes Koala. "It's going to be loud. Get ready
