I was very hesitant to pick it up.
I'm so glad I did. (y)

Real surprising. I was sceptical when a friend mentioned they had a newie on the way, it pretty much exceeds expectations. Very dark.

I heard they were back, new singer of course. First I heard a new song of theirs on youtube and then saw this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHa68Qb1Zhc&feature=PlayList&p=629C37CB542BCFB4&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=12) performance on Jimmy Kimmel a few nights ago.
No complaints here. I'm liking it. It seems to keep on track as if Layne were still alive and this would be the new album they'd put out.(y)
I was hoping for it to be a lot heavier sounding but it's steeped in the eerie presence of Staley.
The opening lines set up the tone nicely:
Hope,
A new beginning
Time,
Time to start living
Like just before we died
There's no going back
To the place we started from..

I never EVER thought I'd even give this a try... without Layne I mean... pff yeah as if.
So I'm on my drive home from work last night and NPR reviews this album, playing snippets and OMG it HIT ME - this shits amazing (y) Been rockin it all last night and listening right now as a matter of fact. So good.

do they do some acoustic type shit too? is it like a mix between their acoustic ep's and their much heavier cd's?
Never got into them. I always thought their music was weak/tired and Staley's voice made me OD on boredom/annoyance.

Yeah I was never a huge fan beyond Would, Rooster and Them Bones, but this album is good.

I don't know how many times Layne screwed up a live song because he was all junked up.
Even when I saw them he screwed up songs.

Not a bad album at all. I like it.

I loved Layne Staley. His voice his vulnerability and his attention to detail. When he sang with Mad Season just before his death his delivery was perfect, the shows were amazing.
Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands out of Seattle but for some reason I cannot bring myself to listen to this. I saw a bit of the Jimmy Kimmel song, but had to turn it off. It's weird, I really like these guys but I'm kind of afraid to listen to this record. When I was living downtown Jerry Cantrell owns a pool hall/cafe that I went to at least twice a week... now I've moved and sort of have left that scene and all the drugs, alcohol and partying. I have a huge block over this and I'm not too sure why I'm being such a big pussy over this.
On another note I really really like the new Pearl Jam record. That song Fixer smokes.
Yeah I was never a huge fan beyond Would, Rooster and Them Bones, but this album is good.
I will say I like Staley's vocals better than Cantrell's, though. I absolutely hate his repeated retarded cat impressions:
"...you are the one to abuse.....Meoooow!"
"Meeeeooooow, meeooow!"
That's what I call it, anyway.

Here's the NPR piece I heard that piqued my interest. (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=113434579) Funny in that they review Pearl Jam as well with not so much love...
In other news, I finally saw Pearl Jam live the other night. It renewed the love I once had for them in the 90s. What a great show. Anyhoo, yeah so new Alice in Chains = (y)

That's exactly how I felt.
Give it a try.

It is a great starter song and holy fuck does he sound like Layne.
This album is an instant grower and the production is nice. Definitely one of my favorite albums this year.

Eh, I hate to say it but Check my Brain has become a skipper. That guitar work is so repetitive and boring.
Other than that, the album is a good piece of work.

Whoah. I always liked Facelift the best. Lots of dope tempo changes and whatnot. I liked Dirt too. After that I couldn't stomach the softness. Anything on the new album sound like Facelift?

As harsh as your statement is, I completely understand the sentiment. It just hasn't come up to the surface within myself yet. I wish they would of just came up with a different name for this band, rather than cash in on the Alice in Chains name. This is a different band and those days of Alice in Chains reign.
I was driving down second avenue in Seattle a few weeks ago and I looked up at the marquee on the Moore Theater that read "Alice in Chains Tonight" and it freaked me out.
Freaked me out in a bad way. And just like you I love Alice in Chains as Layne Staley led them. Layne may of been just a broken down junkie with a double tracked voice who could barely stand at the mike, but he was our broken down junkie with a double tracked voice who could barely stand at the mike.
Still can't bring myself to listen to this album... for multiple reasons besides the above.

I totally get why you two feel the way you do. Here's some quotes from Jerry that helped persuade me to pick up the album.
"As you know in your life, things change. And if we're going to go out and play Alice In Chain music, and the three of us are going to be in the band together and we called it something else, they would just say, 'Oh yeah, it's the Alice in Chains guys playing Alice in Chains songs,'"
"Our friend passing away shouldn't be held against us if we want to go out and play the music that we created with him. We've dedicated half of our lives to being in this band, written some great material that has stood the test of time, and reached a lot of people. I think the bigger message is we all have difficulties and hurdles to overcome and there's plenty of life left to live. And just because you lose somebody, doesn't mean you stop living yourself. That's the best way I can put it."
