how many of you have them? i got my nails did for the first time this past weds and i cant decide how i feel about it.
i was going to get it done for a wedding that im going to be in and decided to go in a couple weeks before hand just to see how it went and get them filled in again before the wedding.
afterwards i recieved a lot of criticism. one person told me that acrylics were "for black women"... a couple other girls i showed gave me shit because i filed them down really short. i normally bite the fuck out of my nails, well below my fingertips, and i was finding having them long both cost me in dexterity and made me feel really self conscious about my obviously fake nails.
on the plus side, the acrylic is too thick for me to bite through and huts my teeth, so my for real fingernails are actually growing to a reasonable length.

i got long fake nails with a french nail style
i think you should look like a/ be a grown up and confident woman to wear them which im clearly not but just owning them lets me sleep at night
my real nails dont look bad at all but i could never get them so long, they would break before
i live for the fake!

since i filed them down to a reasonable length i was pretty happy with how they looke for awhile. i thought long nails were just really not me at all. plus i do a lot of work with my hands that nails would just get in the way of. ive never had fingernails that didnt look disgusting before, so that was a nice change. like i said i bite mine like crazy, and normally when i run out of biteable nail i move on to the cuticle and surrounding skin.
apparently my nails grow freakishly fast though. i read that you should get them filled every 2 weeks, but it hasnt been a full week yet and mine have grown out a lot, theres a pretty big gap between where the fake nail stops and where my real nail stops. do you normally get them filled as soon as you can see space in between, or just let it go for awhile or what?

I've had them off and on at different times. I don't get them any more because I can't play my guitar with them.
Anyway, you can let them grow out a little bit. I used to go 3, sometimes 4 weeks between fills but my nails don't grow for shit (which is why I had them to begin with).
They take a bit of getting used to, both the fakeness and the dexterity but I found with time I ceased caring whether people judged me for them and eventually sort of forgot to be self conscious about it altogether. I definitely got better at typing and other things which require fingertips really quickly. Now if I get them done for some event or other it comes back really fast.
I was also a nail biter and having them totally broke me of that habit.

yeah i think i might keep them on for awhile to deal with the biting. i also pick at my cuticles a lot, and they're useless for that as well, so my fingers are healing up nicely. my fingers look a lot less fat now as well.
i recently got a haircut that is reportedly "girly," and the nails and whatnot... i had someone tell me that they "liked the old me"
im just trying to look a little more feminine STOP JUDGING MEEEEEEEEE

I had acrylic nails when I graduated from college for like 5 years. Then they banned them at pretty much every hospital because there were studies done stating they carried germs and stuff. It took MONTHS before my nails were back to normal when I took them off. Also took lots of soaking..and my nails were all ridged. It hurt so bad even to put my hands in my pockets. I've been without acrylics since 2003 now...my nails are still thin but def not as thin as the day I took off those fake nails.

my fingernails are weird, i guess because of the abuse i put them through. ive managed to stop biting them in the past a few times long enough for there to be white at the tip, but once they get that long they get all bendy. i dont think they're that thin, just super flexible. anyway this leads to situations where the nail will bend back over it self, like so that the underside of the tip of the nail is facing upwards. this doesnt cause any pain but the nail creases and usually eventually tears off at the crease.
i was worried about these fucking up my natural nail but its pretty fucked up already...

Well actually, when you get them taken off your real nails will be paper thin. It's just the procedure they use, they sand the original nails within an inch of their life before applying the acrylic, they do it when you get them filled too. It really is a long process before they grow back and it does hurt a lot. Too hot or too cold water will be uncomfortable, forget opening cans of soda or peeling a sticker or tape off of anything and be prepared for extreme pain when your quicks catch on anything. *shudder* I sure don't miss that part.

EXACTLY!! That's why I will never get fake nails again. Also you run the risk of getting fungal infections if they don't fill them properly. That drill they use sometimes burns and also can cut you. I think it took a good 6 months before my nails were back to normal.

I hate them. I like the way they look, but they fuck up my real nails REALLY bad. So I skip them.
I hear CalGel's are way better for your nails health. But I'm not positive. They offer them at an organic nail salon I go to but I have yet to try them.
I just stick to my natural nails which are pretty nice on their own or just paint them.

I had them for my wedding but that was the only time. They were nice for a week but that was bout it for me.
Incidentally, I was also a nailbiter and the thing that got me off it was, having emery boards everywhere. I mean everywhere. Tucked into jacket pockets, in my desk drawer at work, all around the house, etc. When I got the urge to bite, I would file. It took a few weeks but it worked. Once they were long enough (still short though) I went to a salon and had a manicure, just basic, no acrylics. And same again the next week, for a few weeks. Basically it's just about creating a new habit.

i absolutely hated having the nails. i got them done one christmas cause i thought i would try the look. i didnt want them long, just nice enough cause i dont grow my nails very long (nail biter, yep). anyway, having them on was kinda annoying, i kept them for two weeks, and it was IMPOSSIBLE to get them off. hurt so much. it wasn't worth it for me.

You have to soak your nails in acetone nail polish remover. It took forever. Soak for a bit, scrape a bit. Ick.

I would advise going back to the salon to have them do it. It really is too painstaking to do yourself. That and you can ask for a regular manicure so you can try and get your nails back to being healthy.

Yeah, I tried breaking them and picking them off piece by piece myself one time. It didn't work out well, I wouldn't recommend it. This one piece ripped into my quick and was stuck there. Every time I moved it even slightly the shooting pain took my breath away.
Go to the salon, they'll do it all at once and help you get back on the road to nail health.
I know we're scaring you but really we're just telling you how to avoid the pain.

I haven't polished my nails in probably 5 years, which keeps them pretty healthy. I've always had long nails too, I used them as tools. maybe they're not always all even, but I like them the way they are. I cut them with scissors and file them with sandpaper occasionally when I'm at work.
I'm pretty lucky to have thick nails, but also the whole not polishing them thing has kept them nice for a long time.

oh yeah, and to the topic, I do know a few people who got them to quell nail biting and it worked pretty much every time, so good job.
