First President since 1991 not to meet with the Dalai Lama:

Now I wonder how I beloved hosts here feel about this. On one side, they are all about Tibet, etc...but on the other hand they were strong Obama supporters.. hummm:rolleyes:

and look where the meetings with the other Presidents got Tibet - NO WHERE

I do recall a bloody battle occurring between Tibetan Monks and Chinese police months before the Beijing Olympics where a president who I will not name ended up prancing about and embarassing this nation drunk off his ass.

Talk about tossing under buses

but of course you're not surprised by that

Sounds about right. You gotta keep "The Man" happy and if you live in America right now "the Man" is China. Remember how much money Barack borrowed from them just a few months ago to pay off Wall Street? Of course he is going to kiss their collective socialist asses and frnkly it's downright Presidential of him to do so.

Probably disappointed. I'm disappointed too. I don't regret my vote for Obama, but I do wish he'd take a stronger stance on something like this since it's important.

Why do you act like you have to agree with everything the candidate you voted for says or does? I don't get the all-or-nothing mentality.

It is very unfortunate and disappointing, but once again how significant is it, really? The fact is that China has had a free hand in Tibet for decades, and there's not much the USA could do about that even if any American government wanted to.

Obama didn't get the Olympics. Obama didn't meet with the Dalai Lama. The litany of complaints made by the flailing right-wingers around here is a list of footnotes and asides. Doesn't even merit a second glance. When Obama comes around to lying through his teeth for the sake of an illegal war, when he abandons major American cities to the chaos of natural disasters, when he mounts all-out assaults on the judicial system for political advantage - then we might have grounds for some real discussion.

I agree, I am waiting for him to do something too.

I'm still waiting for the people defending Obama on this to offer a rebuttal other than "well, Bush did worse".

I did, I pointed out that it wasn't significant. It won't even be remembered in a few days. Especially after Obama actually does meet with the Dalai Lama.

with all due respect, Rob, you are the first person to bring up President Bush in this thread.

no mention of the Empire State Building lighting up Red and Yellow for the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the PRC?

Actually kaiser isn't the only one...

This is about Bush,

I do recall a bloody battle occurring between Tibetan Monks and Chinese police months before the Beijing Olympics where a president who I will not name ended up prancing about and embarassing this nation drunk off his ass.

and this is a reference to Bush and "well, Bush did worse",
When Obama comes around to lying through his teeth for the sake of an illegal war, when he abandons major American cities to the chaos of natural disasters, when he mounts all-out assaults on the judicial system for political advantage - then we might have grounds for some real discussion.

I'd honestly like to hear the Obama defenders offer something other than Bush misgivings.
Nobody here has ever shown any support for Bush, so I'm not really sure why you guys always offer this as an excuse for criticisms of Obama?

You can criticize valvano's game all you like, but "Bush did it too" and "Bush did worse" isn't showing much game yourselves.

whatever kaiser said about a president drunk off his ass shouldn't apply to Bush.

I see plenty of responses about our relationship with China.

I'd like to hear Obama's reason for the snub.

RobMoney$
10-05-2009, 11:35 PM
This is actually the second day in a row he made reference to Bush being drunk at the Beijing Olympics.

and I'm still not sure what it has to do with anything?

kaiser soze

Then that is your problem

If you cannot see for a second that the handling of diplomacy, national security, domestic and foreign policy, economics, and the environment of the previous administration has any effect on how this administration is handling things then you are blind.

RobMoney$
10-05-2009, 11:56 PM
Ok, I think we can all agree with you.
Bush sucked. I get it. And I agree.

Now let's move foward and start having an honest discussion about Obama's failing to meet with the Dali Lama.

I agree with this. On a personal level yes I'd say I'd have preferred him to meet with the DL. But, pragmatically, it's not a good idea in the light of his upcoming trip to China - this event cannot overshadow the business that needs to be done on that trip. Like it or not - and I understand that it's mainly "not" - China is the US's banker right now. And yes that sucks but they're going to play a major role in getting the US economy back on track. It's shitty but it's the way it is.

Perhaps we could hear why this is supposed to be such a big deal to begin with. According to valvano, this is a significant story because of the support that exists (or existed) for Tibet on the Beastie Boys Message Board. I don't know that I buy that.

YoungRemy
10-06-2009, 12:43 PM
silly me. I should have at least read the article completely.
according to the article, the meeting has been "deferred." Obama sent a delegate to the Dalai Lama's exiled Tibet to tell them in advance they wouldn't be meeting this time around.
