View Full Version : So I found out I have diabetes

I'm not entirely surprised I have this because there's a history in my family but I'm kinda surprised I was diagnosed this young. I was in the hospital last week getting some tests done because my blood sugar was ridiculous and well...you know the rest.

I've already said my goodbyes to delicious flavor and my parents have gotten me all this sugar free stuff. My mom is especially into it, she's going all out trying to keep me from being bummed out about it even though I'm really not. I knew it would happen someday, just not this soon. It was kinda scary getting the tests done though, they kept sending me from one to another and in the back of my mind I was scared somehow I had cancer. I don't know why, just an irrational thought, but I had no energy at all when I was in there and just wanted to get out. I guess I'm sorta lucky in that sense but I've spent so much time in hospitals over the years that I just fear the worst now.

But, here I am, living the sugar-free life. Things could be worse, but nothing I can do about it other than take care of myself, which ironically I thought I was doing but I guess jokes on me. Anybody else on here deal with this? Any suggestions on how to take care of myself? I appreciate it, thanks for the support.

take care of yourself and eat right, monitor your blood sugar closely, listen to your doctor, exercise, and maybe one day you can get your situation in control...

sorry to hear about that

Damn that sucks and I hope you get into a routine that'll work best for your health

I don't know much about diabetes but I think alcohol isn't the best and I wonder if stevia is better for you rather than artificial sweeteners.

2 of my family have it.You'll just have to adapt to it but let everyone know you have it so that in an emergency they know how to assist you should your sugar levels drop and such. Also wear a chain or something that states you are a diabetic should you be around people you don't know or at least when medical assistance arrives they can identify that you have it and treat you properly. It's a change of lifestyle but until they find a cure ...but all the best with it.(y)

are they putting you on insulin or are they sticking to diet and possibly a pill like Metformin? That stinks. I'm sure you can find lots of healthy recipes that are yummy as well.

Sorry dude.

Several people have told me to get tested for it because I drink a hell of a lot of water (about 6 litres a day). You've reminded me to contact my GP. Although I did check the NHS website and that is the only symptom I have - apart from peeing all the time, but that is cus I drink so much water. And its nearly all in the morning.

Good luck with it.

Sorry to hear that dude. In a weird coincidence, I went to the docs about something completely unrelated and he made me pee in a cup (in manner of sample not weird perversion) because he wanted to test me for diabetes

See, my doctor actually handed me a cup and said "piss and this and let me watch" while he lubed up his hands.

Are you okay though?

ironically, you made the last post when i made my thread (http://beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=67775)

my first tip: don't just dive into anything that calls itself sugar free. those candies (and especially the ice cream) are chalk full of this shit called sorbitol and/or maltitol and they give you some serious shits

What if it's a swimming pool called Sugar Free?

in lieu of TAL's comments, i think Adam and I will be hosting an event like this (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090927172347AALJlh9), to raise awareness on diabetes

Well, it only happened Monday so there are no results back as yet but I feel fine. I don't seem to have any of the typical symptoms that crop up so not sure what he was getting on at. He commented a lot on my skin (apparently it's dry which I had never noticed before) but that was all. He was quite odd

Wish you well with your health and management…this is a helpful resource the L.P.N who’s here recommends… (http://www.diabetes.ca/about-diabetes/literature/diabetes-dialogue/)

Cool! Being a nurse is awesome. I work in oncology/bone marrow transplant. Love it. Such a rewarding job!

You work with cancer patients? That must be kinda brutal at times, though.

I think I want to work in an emergency room.

Either way I definitely want to work in a hospital.

Sorry to hear this :( but at the very least it sounds like you are keeping a cool head about it and will take care of yourself. I'm not too familiar with diabetes, otherwise I would give some input. Definitely use your resources though, be it others that have diabetes, online, or books recommended by your doctor.

My manfriend is type 1 and it doesn't affect his day-to-day life all that much. Only shitty thing is how much $$ insulin and other supplies cost, and the whole kidneys, feet and eyes falling off and him probably dying before me thing. :( But seriously, good that you know now and can get it under control.

Haha but if you're ugly then we don't want you raising awareness.

Thanks for the help guys, especially jabumbo, I'm calling you my dia-buddy now, congrats. Thanks for the sugar-free candy warning, no candy is worth me shitting myself yet. I guess I'm taking it all in stride, I mean, I pretty much have to. It's not like I got a death sentence but when I told a few people at work (today was my first day back) that I have diabetes you would've thought I was losing my foot right then and there. One girl gave me a hug and her boobs felt nice.

So that was cool.

right now it costs me about $4 a day

hey adam, did they make you piss on the keytone strips to check for that? that alone is enough to make you take care of yourself. life is not worth living when it feels like you are pissing out stones

my sister was diagnosed with diabetes at age 7 .. she is now 48 with two girls and doing well.

Diet and exercise ... She has a built in pump for the insulin and no longer does shots.
