I sometimes use American words by accident, but that's because I do an effing English course where all the students have been influenced by American tv shows and keep using this cringe-worthy Dutch/American accent and even most of the tutors don't seem to know the difference between AmE and BrE words. It's highly confusing.
Because of this, I recently mixed up 'holiday' and 'vacation'. I used the latter because it's so similar to the Dutch word, but an English chick told me I was WRONG. I was a very embarrassing moment, as you might understand.

PS: I often 'bum a fag', but not in the American sense. Typical that the yanks think of perverted things when they hear that phrase.

I kinda understand that feeling, because I have the same thing with Belgians. We both speak Dutch, but they also use a lot of different words that sound silly/funny to me.

Also, the Dutch are probably comparable to Americans and Belgians to the Brits.
Dutch people are known for being loud, obnoxious and greedy, whereas Belgian accents sound 'softer' and the people are seen as more polite, sophisticated and jolly.

These are just stereotypes, but often, specially in the case of the Dutch ones, I find them to be true.

I was told that in Belgium, if you can't speak Dutch (Flemish) don't even attempt to speak French as most will hate you more than if you just speak English. So I speak a fucked up mixture of Dutch and German, but that seems to get me by without murders. I really do like the French though.

I was told its best just to speak english in belgium, not that I can speak any other language - there is some serious civil issues in that country only a war could sort.

Vacation ain't that wrong, any english person would still know what you mean. I suppose maybe if trying get a perfect written sentence in english you would use holiday but if I was a teacher, I wouldn't mark it down wrong.

I can explain why the Flemmish hate the Walloons (is that really what you call them?): Wallonie is the poorer part of the country and Flanders has been supporting them financially for years. Every year they give them billions of euro's, just to keep the country together. Yet the Walloons seem to boycott the Flemish on every other point. They refuse to speak Dutch, whereas the majority of the Flemish population speak French. Also in Brussels, which should support both sides of the country as it is its Capital, people even feel embarrassed to speak Dutch.
So basically: Flanders is trying to help Wallonie by giving them loads of money, and in return Wallonie are ignoring Flanders and treating them like a huge pile of shite. If I was Flemish I'd be fairly annoyed by that too.
