racist?

This totally wouldn't fly in the states.

One side of the argument is that this isn't the states, so maybe Americans should realise there's a whole planet out there.

The side I tend to agree with is that putting shoe polish on your face to pretend you're black is patronising and will never, ever be cool. I see normal (as in not on TV) people at parties do it for '70s themes' wearing an afro. Fucked.

I think Australia may not be more racist than many countries, but it's certainly the most oblivious to the lessons learned from racial tension and internal struggles of the sort.

i take that back about not being able to fly in the states, you know what, didn't the wayans brothers do the movie "white girls" where they did the reverse of this?

They had make up make them look like white girls... as the title implies. Double standard, no doubt.

but that film was sooooooooo bad that no one took any notice of any double standards. shite girls.

I was wondering how long it would take for this thread to appear.

I was watching it live, and when they walked out I turned to my GF and said 'I'm fairly sure this is racist now'.

It definitely was not intended to be racist, but it pretty much still is. Australia doesn't have a history of blackface or minstrel shows, nobody here have ever really even heard of those terms. So thats why its not really considered offensive here.

What those guys and the producers are guilty of however, is ignorance. Wasn't the wisest thing to do.

I don't think Australia is anymore racist than any other country. A lot less racist than most. But the problem with this coming out on youtube is all the reeallly racist backward fucks have all come out and posting some horrible, horrible youtube comments. And that doesnt make us look good.

From late ocotober to early december my entire country will be crowded with these (http://www.photofacts.nl/fotografie/foto/intocht_zwarte_pieten.jpg"") people. Racist? I dunno.

It's a bad look on anybody, just makes me cringe. Always hated, hated seeing people don shoe polish or back facepaint and look all happy about it. It's pretty degrading. It's like dressing up as a vagina and saying "I'm a woman"; it's fucking stupid.

umm, black people are varying shades of brown. part of why "black face" is so offensive is that it assumes all black people look the same.

anyway, LOL that Harry Connick Jr. is on there. He pretty much sums up why it's offensive in the end.

racist or not, it was probably the most unfunny thing I've ever seen in my life.

well what do you want them to do? put different shades of light brown to black from left to right of their face.

dave chappelle puts on white face to do a skit is hilarious. white guys put on a black face and its racist.

no, dumb ass, that's not what I meant. I meant that black people aren't actually black, they have all different skin tones.

if you don't know why black face is offensive, then you don't understand history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface

there's a difference between making yourself up to look black, and quite another to rub shoe polish all over your face.

duuuuh i understand why in history its offensive.

but i dont think that pertains anymore to be honest.

so if they had done a lighter shade of brown it would have been ok with you?

it's offensive because of the history. I don't know what's so hard to understand about that.

It would've been okay if they actually tried to look like the jackson 5.

i remember in first grade we were all coloring like different scenes of like famous black people during black history month. i colored in all the black people using the black crayon. i caught a lot of shit for that.

i was all like... then why are they called BLACK people!

i was just like... hmmmm. black people. what crayon.... oh i know! the black crayon! duh! and i was coloring and i noticed that it didn't look right. but i was just like aw fuck it and kept coloring like martin luther kind and george wasthington carver in with that solid black crayon.

you can argue all you like, but they could have easily dressed up in suits that were 70's like the actual Jackson 5 and donned afro wigs without painting their faces black as night.

they were running around like buffoons and "acting black". that is offensive. maybe it isn't offensive to australians, I don't know...but it is definitely not something that would make it to american television.

Personally, I just thought it was ridiculous and unfunny, and I didn't get it at all. What was the funny part supposed to be?

blackface wasn't done in a lighthearted way. it was done to make black people look like dumb fucking monkeys. which was acceptable at the time. and that's basically what i saw in that clip.
