I watched this video just now and the story breaks my heart. I know we all know people who obsess over record collecting but this guy has dedicated his entire life to the process. Sometimes I wish people with big bankrolls would have a big heart and help guys like this out. Peep the video and let me know what you think we could do to help this guy! I read that update from Yauch talkin bout helping the nuns and that definitely seems like a good cause too. I know there's suffering in the world but watching this record collection go down the drain would be heart-wrenching on a different level. grrr

they had a story about this in the paper here last year when it first came up. big shame really, guy really was dedicated to that stuff.
i think at the time of pressing, there was one local buyer, but i can't remember what actually ended up happening with it...

I've come across this before, and I still feel the same way about his "ordeal". He can call what he has an archive, but in actuality, it's just a huge collection. A lot of the records they show in the video can be purchased in second hand stores and swap meets/flea markets for less than a buck. It's just common crap that nobody wants (which is probably why so much of it was never released on CD). The value he put on that Stones album is also an exaggeration ($10,000???). The bottom line is he expects waaay too much for his collection. He guessitmates he has about a 2.5 million LPs/45s, and thinks it's worth $50,000,000? So each album/singles is worth, on average, $20? I've bought pristine copies of Zeppelin, Beatles, Clash, and Funkadelic albums for less a dollar, and I see them going for a few bucks on ebay all the time. I paid 25 cents each for 12 Sinatra albums. I've seen that Elvis Christmas album at like 10 different stores for under a buck. That Moody Blues album they zoom in on is at pretty much every second hand store I go to. People have given this kind of shit away for free to me. Granted, I haven't amassed 2.5 million albums, but I can't see how he came up with that price tag.

Usually, you get a deal when you buy in bulk. I think that the million he was offered was probably a decent offer. You can argue that some records are worth this or that, but the majority of what's in his collection is more than likely dollar bin garbage. If his most valued record is worth 10k to him, how do you justify the rest?

buying in bulk yes, but the colleciton is more than just a bulk purchase i think..
he should take out the ones that are worth more than $50 and sell the rest as a collection.. $1,000,000 sounds ok to me, maybe 2?

It's a disease if you collect things that are too numerous to really enjoy. I say this as I am buying new shelves for my own little vinyl collection. :o

id bet he doesnt really know what he has and combing through 2 million records to find the more expensive ones are out of the question - in his head he estimates there are some diamonds in there but he doesnt know what or where.. so he has no choice but to try and sell them as a collection
