Never knew that the Beastie boys were the inspiration of RZA of the Wu-tang clan.

-Rapper, producer and actor RZA (http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rza/artist.jhtml), discussing the meaning and inspiration behind his new book "The Tao of Wu." (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1624077/20091016/wu_tang_clan.jhtml) The just-released tome is part autobiography, part philosophical think piece and 100 percent Wu. RZA spoke to MTV News at a book signing in New York last night, and he had plenty to share about inspiration, family and hip-hop. "My call was the call to hip-hop. It happened to me when I was 7 or 8 years old. Hearing [the Beastie Boys lyrics] 'Dip, dip, dive/ So socialize/ Clean out your ears and open your eyes.' Back then, it was just a rhyme, but listen to those words: 'Socialize' with people, 'clean out your ears and open your eyes.' See things for what they are. It's a message right there. At the time, it was just a message and a vibe. But it called me into this world of hip-hop. Through hip-hop, my whole family was saved. Many families were saved. Look at the Wu-Tang Clan, and all our families were saved."

The space-time continuum disagrees.

uhm... I might be missing or forgetting something, but those "lyrics" are from alive which is so far after Wu-Tang it doesn't make sense.

I became a fan of the Beastie Boys when I heard them rap "Too many rappers/ not enough MC's" in 1965 when I was 2 years old.

Alive came out in 1999, so its almost 10 years old. I dont think he meant it shaped Wu-Tangs first album but more-so of his musical craft/ production/ etc. Bobby Digital was released in 1998 so its hard to say, but Rza is just recognizing that the Bboys are dope and have influenced several artists, especially those from NY.

Dear God are you kidding me..........just stop and go away. Does common sense account for nothing anymore, regardless of who wrote it meaning the MTV "reporter", YOU, the website author who posted it, etc.

Come on man seriously? I'll give you one hint, the name of the group he is reffering to is in the lyrics below. You figure out the name of the song yourself.

We're The Furious Five Plus Grandmaster Flash
Givin' You A Blast And Sho 'Nuff Class
So To Prove To Ya All That We're Second To None
We're Gonna Make Five MCs Sounds Like One
Ya Gotta Dip Dip Dive, So So Socialize
Clean Out Your Ears Then Open Your Eyes
And Then Pay at The Door As A Donation
To Hear The Best Sounds In Creation
He's A Disco Dream Of A Mean Machine
And When It Comes To Size, Ya See What We Mean

Year Superrappin' was released 1979 - Year RZA was born 1969 = 10 **** 7 or 8 or 10 but who's counting right??

The chorus from "Alive" was taken from a song called "Superrappin" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. They just switched the words around to be clever, I guess. The original goes "clean out your ears then open your eyes." I'm sorry but I hate "Alive." Definitely one of my least favorite Beastie cuts.

EDIT: Dust Monkey beat me to it :)

Just about every lyric that comes out of Beasties Boys mouths a reference. That's what they do.

The interviewer is obviously a retard. When you see [the beastie boys lyrics] it means that RZA never stated it was beastie boys. The author implied it.

Good bye credibility!

dude the reporter didn't even try..... not only did he not take the time to look up when alive was released; but lets say if he/she guessed it was on License to Ill that would still put RZA at 16-17 years old not 7 or 8.

shame on you MTV
