You're supposed to be an internet veteran, Bob.
You know to wait for the Poll.

Five Years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq3EZhT3G7U)

This song rules. Although honestly the Thin White Duke era is pretty much better. BTW The live version of this song on youtube is pretty slick too.

The dude's prolific.
I probably could have listed 40 songs and someone would have found something that wasn't on there.

Also, I kind of like when someone throws out deep cut in these threads, like Yeahwho did with Five Years.
Stimulates the discussion. (y)

Ashes to ashes, funk to funky
We know Major Tom's a junkie
Strung out in heavens high
Hitting an all-time low

Great tune.

Any Bowie song gets old after a while for me, although I like a decent handful of the ones in the poll. I just picked the one that seems to have to most replay value in a given day.

I like "Velvet Goldmine" and "Seven" a lot too.

I got into Seu Jorge's version of Life on Mars from the Life Aquatic soundtrack, so now I'm hooked on the original.

I think my obsession started when I saw the first episode of the British version of Life on Mars.

Modern Love is an awesome pop song, in general, but as a Bowie song it isn't really a favorite. But it's a perfect example of how he could have really appealed to the mainstream if he wanted to. And I think he proved his point on the Let's Dance album.

Ziggy Stardust is probably my overall fav song. Nothing really comes close. Soul Love and Lady Stardust, from the same album, are high up there too. I don't really LOVE any of his other albums from start to finish like I do Ziggy.

Queen Bitch wins for favorite riff (next to Ziggy's), even though it essentially borrows it from this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHgO7yh06V0).

Also, Mick Ronson's playing really brought a lot of the songs from this era to life.

does the fact that luther vandross was on young americans detract or add to it? I dunno.

lady stardust is so good. i'm also a big fan of marc bolan, whom it's supposed to be written about. Also, Cracked Actor just fuckin rocks and is very masculine sounding for him, and i play it on jukeboxes more often than any other song of his.

Why would it detract ? For me it makes the sound that Bowie was aiming for at the time alot more authentic..........but thats just me

He really liked making songs about the people who he was influenced by at the time, in the style of those people he was dedicating the song to (Queen Bitch sounding like VU/Lou Reed, Song for Bob Dylan sounding like Dylan etc). But even though the Ziggy Stardust album is pretty much Electric Warrior II, Lady Stardust is sort of all Bowie. It has that theatrical Hunky Dory sound from before his glam phase.

this whole bowie was unoriginal and just copied other artist idea grates on me more and more as time goes by (not that you brought this up Mick but i've read this many many times on internet message baords) , even if it was true, i've never been particularly convinced, give me bowie over lou reed/ vu any day, and as much as i love marc bolan he never made as an album as good as The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust. The joy of bowies music, in the 70's at least was he drew and all his influences but still managed to come up with a sound unique to him. Then again i grew up in a house with an older sister and brother that loved bowie so maybe i'm a little biased
