Dear Aussies,
I have recently come off a four-month job on a cattle station in your lovely outback, which job has entitled me to another year living and working in your delightful country. Now I intend to spend the summer on the coast, learning to surf. Question: what is a good place in Australia to do this? By that I mean what is a place that is nice and laid-back and chilled-out and not swamped with German tourists and non-stop partying? I mean Gold Coast is nice and all, but I don't know if I could handle it for six months. Also I'm looking for somewhere outside Queensland, because I have been here for almost a year and would like to see some other places.
Where the good swell at?

No doubt it's probably going to be Adelaide. I mean, everything else is the best in Adelaide I'm told.

Go to Melbourne and frequent many bars like I did(y)
perth or adelaide.. everywhere else is too busy. perth has better beaches and weather than adelaide.

anywhere on the west australian coast
it's like the anti-queensland
bells beach down in the melbourne area. also surfer's paradise is magnificent and there were hardly any tourists around when i was there. granted that was 1990 though.

If yr in qld at the moment, I'd head to byron to learn to surf, and then shoot over to wa for the good swells. Byron will be fairly quiet cause of no school holidays. Plenty of surf schools, too.
The best east coast swells happen during winter, so I wouldn't hang around unless you feel like getting beaten up over scrappy waves. At least in WA, you'll get beaten beaten up over good waves.

Lots of support for WA, I see. Cool. Let's say I do go West - I doubt I'll be able to find work/accomms in Perth as I imagine it's very expensive. Any suggestions about a smaller place on the coast? Or any info at all about WA would be great.
margaret river for sure. very laid back and chilled out. possibly bunbury? mandurah might be too big but it's definately worth a look. they're all south of Perth.

Yeah Margaret River I hear is quite nice.
Or how bout the NSW mid coast?
Or you should definitely check out the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, loads of surf towns.
Or you could come to Adelaide. But I'm over Adelaide. Adelaide sucks.

margaret river for sure.
Upon further research I have decided that Margaret River will indeed be my destination. Excellent. Thanks for the help, y'all.
