View Full Version : I've been trying to knock myself out with alcohol in order to get myself to sleep

But just late at night when I'm up by myself, looking for things to do or just thinking too much. It's starting to become a habit, and I'm thinking it's not really the best way to relax. Anyway, that's all. Sorry about the rant.

Wow. Something on your mind, buddy?

I've been getting anxiety at night lately. I'm not a pray-er but I've been just meditating the old catholic prayers I grew up with. I try to focus on the words remind myself that everything seems worse at 3 in the morning and and usually fall asleep again eventually.

The problem isn't with once I'm in bed, it's getting myself to the point where I can make myself let go and just go to bed. You know like when you're falling asleep on the couch and you're still trying to find something to watch, instead of just letting yourself go to sleep. I do this with everything from music to magazines/books, the internet, and food/alcohol.

If you find you have lot on your mind and its keeping you awake, try this:
Take one of the things you are thinking about, put it in a kinda bubble and let it float away slowly away out of your mind, then try the same for the next thing, do them one at a time and you may find yourself asleep soon enough. If something comes back, send it away further the next time.

Alcohol does help though still, but I drink too much (if not alcoholic) but the above works for me when my mind won't slow down.

You need to work out more so you can't wait to go to bed.

Or, perhaps warm yourself a cup of milk and enjoy a simple picture book to read near a night light.

Are you seriously able to do this? Because I'm sure I'd give up pretty fast if I tried that.

I work out earlier in the night. Then have a recovery smoothie. Can't have more dairy later. Too many calories, dude.

Bob gives good advice.

Maybe the early night workout revs you up too much too late in the day, and maybe the smoothie does too. Could you try working out in the morning? This would make you get up earlier so you might be more tired earlier, too.

Nyquil is just like using alcohol. What about sleepy time tea. Some kind of ritual would be good, I bet. Any kind of ritual that you do to tell your body it's sleepy time.

The best way I can get to sleep is to make myself sit down and accomplish something. Like, let's say I need to write some letters to family members or I want to try to write a story. I get comfy, I get my tea I get my water my favorite pillow, a snack, I get the lamp just right and say to myself. "Okay, gonna get some work done now! No destractions, feeling good. Let's go." That's an express ticket to sleepytown for me.

Can't work out in the morning. Not a morning person at all. My energy peaks mid-evening.

I should reiterate that I actually don't want to sleep most nights. The booze is a way of tricking myself to do so. I don't think there's a cure for it. Thank you all for the helpful advice, though.

nyquil will make you want to go to sleep. although if you're not tired enough, you'll just wake up in a few hours and be wide awake, so...i don't know i'm just trying to help stop grilling me

Knock that shit off immediately. My mom did that and she was a horrible raging drunk for all of my teenage years.

It's also an ineffective way to get quality sleep, BTW.

Yes :) It's stolen from a meditation technique we used to do at the buddhist centre tho but it still works for me. Slowing down your thoughts when you're tired will slowly put you into a slumber. Add a little drunkness to that and you're gone even quicker.

I don't literally drink myself to sleep. I actually got into the habit of doing this every night a few years back and then stopped. I sometimes go months without a drink. It's not really in my nature to develop a dependency on substances, I don't think.

Have another kid. Might as well if you're up in the night anyway.

Wasn't there a tv show in the 70s or 80s called "Two Is Enough", about that dude who wrote a book about his big family or something?

I don't need to Sherman tank myself by the way, but thanks.

You don't need to have a sherman.

I used to sit up late at night drinking. It's responsible for about 12,000 of these posts. Sometimes I miss it, but it would be too much effort trying to do it again, somehow.

You don't even want to know how much I used to drink at night but I would recommend change of some sort, something out of the ordinary at night. I walk my dog about anywhere between 11:00 PM to 2:00 AM 3-4 nights a week, other times during the day. Usually 3-6 miles depending on how my energy level is.

That works, I also work the most absurd hours of anyone you know or I know, I guarantee it. it is not unusual for me to work 12+ hours straight starting at 6:00 PM and ending @ 6:00 AM up to 7 nights straight (not including perhaps a 150 mile drive @ 3+ hours a RT), or any other combination of absurd anti circadian clock rage.

I, along with many others who I work with have found 1/2 of a 10 mg pill called ambien can help switch your body around. I tried the melatonin pills but they gave me nightmares.

VALERIAN ROOT works... brew it double strong and you'll feel like you just smoked a nice fat joint.. not something you want to do every night

i was only half joking about the sherman thing but a release of that kind can help occassionally.

anyhoo on a more serious note. i used to smoke weed all the fucking time and was convinced that i couldnt sleep without a cheeky spliff before bed. but after only two nights withut i realised it meant fuck all, i was actually going to bed a lot earlier and feeling a lot better in the morning. i know its a different drug and i realise you arent dependent on the alcohol but it might just be a matter of doing nothing and going to bed at a reasonable time and get into a routine.

drinking hot chocolate is good as well

I have Dormicum, Valium, Xanax and Melotinin in my warchest for sleep.

My sleep schedule is all over the place during the week so the weekend I load up on V's and X's to get a good solid 13 hrs in. Some days if works not going well I'm only able to get maybe 3 hrs in if I'm lucky bc of stress

Melatonin you should be able to get over the counter there in USSA.
