View Full Version : How often do you pull a sickie?
Not saying that is what I am doing today, but I am at home when should be at work.
Around 3 or 4 times a year for me and normally just a day - and its normally because I am busy or had a busy weekend (this weekend has been insane and I ache because of it).
But, people are surprised at my attitude to work, like I work hard but can switch it off as soon as I leave and that I don't subscribe to a career when most people say I should really aim higher*
*I'm actually more intelligent than I come of here (mostly).
So do you pull sickies or do you feel so guilty you end up going in? And do you think people who pull them are the scourge of society?
Additional: I think another problem right now is that I'm comfortable enough not to have to work and that is only improving - heh, mo'money mo'problems.

I think I have only pulled a sickie once or twice in my entire working career and only about a dozen (max) other genuine sick days since 1999. But now I don't get paid if I don't work so have to take that into account (contractor, not particularly evil boss)
^ And shouldn't that be 'come off'?

ha! yes. I won't edit it though, for effect :)
Oh, I don't get paid sickness btw so the NHS aren't losing money on paying me - they just don't have my expertise for the day
i figure being unemployed 3 months this year why take off this year I'll wait until I go to Jamaica in April for my sisters wedding

two, in about 4 years of proper work
both were to attend job interviews which led to my current job
other than that, i just use leave if i want time off.
by law, we get a minimum of 20 days annual leave.
dunno what its like in other places.
i know a dude in singapore who gets only 5.
to me that's fucked up.

I felt bad when I went to work in HK and Taiwan and was moaning about my holiday allowance (like 25 days a year) and then found people in the Taipei office had 8. FFS :o

haha
i know they work long hours in asia but 8 days is ridiculous
how do they not burn out?
call me a lazy bastard, but i believe in work/life balance
not to say you start at 8.30 and leave a 5pm and not a minute later cos thats what your contract says (i hate that too)
but you know...people need time off sometimes and 8 days is fuck all
maybe it;s just how they do things in asia
and yet, i want to work there

I work as a nurse here in Boston. We earn sick time and it depends on how long you've worked at the hospital as to how many hours you accrue. I currently have about 110 hours in my sick bank. At my last job I never called in sick unless I was really sick. At my current job, I've called in sick 3 or 4 nights over the last 4 years when I really wasn't ill. The last time I was actually ill was last December...and I was out for an entire week...but since I only work three 12 hour shifts a week it was only 3 nights.

I'm entitled to 12 a year...I exhaust them all...I consider them to be an active and vital part of the health and wellness clause in my contract...(y)

i only did it once, when i was at this internship. i slept in horribly bad and when the phone rang to wake me i just told the boss i was sick and wasn't able to wake up to call and let them know.
i'm pretty sure i was just hungover though.
a few other times i slept in late, but i usually would just scramble to get in sooner than later so i could at least get most of the day covered.

There seems to be a bit of a german work ethic present in the house...

When I first started working full time after graduating from college I did it all the time. I wasn't so engaged in my job then. Now I can't really get away, I have meetings every day most often two or three.

we get 3 in a rolling year before they start asking questions. i cant afford to take time off, i used to be worse before the kids came along but now its not worth pulling a sicky cos i might need the time off if the bairns get ill, which is what happened last week. 2 days and 7 million pixar films.
