meh. you won't have time to hit Hollywood, and what's to photograph? a sign on the mountain, some trannies, and some other tourists hanging around the Kodak theater?
you could do the Venice to Santa Monica route and get lots of good stuff on the boardwalk. you would be close to the 405 and will be able to make it back to LAX. there's a brand new skatepark that just opened up on venice beach and Cirque Du Soleil is at the Santa Monica Pier, they took over the parking lot and you can se the Bigtop from a mile away...
you could also hit up Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan Beach, and or Marina Del Rey and remain close the the airport...
I really wouldn't go into town if you are fighting the clock.
when will you be in town? hit up your old friend Remy if you want the tour...

actually the Watts Towers are a pretty big cultural attraction in LA and might provide for some good photography. and it's near the airport.

not much around LAX and its pretty crazy traffic wise so your time would be limited, espcially since you have to go through Security again.
There is an In-N-Out about 15 minutes walking distance from the airport, you could visit and see what all of the fuss is about for one of L.A.'s best burgers.
Most of the stuff around there is industrial and hotel related. If you do get a car or guide, best to head up Pacific Coast Highway into the Venice/Santa Monica area. At least you'll see the beach. If you are coming in on a weekend, parking is going to suck billy goat jelly beans. Week day, should be alright.

That is exactly the route I took last feb. before I went to the airport, it's cooler right down by Hollywood and Vine. I really could care less about the sign, though I did get a few pics of it, I liked the bungalows and gardens in the neighborhoods just above Hollywood Blvd, all the winding roads etc. Plus Hollywood business district proper has some great signage, and cool stars on the sidewalk.
I shot a few hundred photos... I happened to be there on the morning of the Oscars so it was pretty crazy... 2 city blocks were closed to traffic but I found parking.
I did not get an Oscar this year.

i really want to go to venice beach, maaaaaybe if i had time.. would it be cheaper to rent a car than to get a cab or something up there? yeah, right?

I've been to a motel in Inglewood one time between flights.I watched 'The Price Is Right' and had a snooze.
if you want to fit in, just wear a kangol hat backwards (http://vice.typepad.com/vice_magazine/images/king_cast_main.jpg), but it could be just an la cliche, and cheesy.

I don't know, I live in Seattle (http://www.spaceneedle.com/view/webcam.html). I'd be happy to be anywhere it wasn't raining for months on end, the parking lot at LAX would be nice today.

I'd let Remy pick you up and drive you around.
Are you staying at a hotel in the LA area for a few days but only have a few hours to yourself? How can that be?

Woohoo! South Bay!
Can be scenic if the overcast isn't too thick. Some good bars in Hermosa too.

im going there for work and will be really busy while working so i dont forsee getting out at all during that time. ill be at the w while im working, so if anythings good around there and close by, maybe ill get out for a tiny bit at night, but i will probably have a couple of early mornings
i may stay an extra day or two if i can get out of some stuff i need to do, im definately trying to go to the beach at least once. ive spent a good part of today looking at maps and getting a sense of the city.
most of the suggestions ive seen online are like universal studios or shit like that. id maaaybe be interested in paramount, going to the sign and a bit of beverly hills, but im not too interested in going to see celebrities houses from the street. i want to check out some spots that people who live there like. ive always wanted to hit up the 'bu but i think thats a little far.. i dont want to do too much touristey stuff, but i want to get a feel for the city and hopefully take some interesting or landmarkey stuff on the way
im kind of excited by the looseness of it, that nothings set in stone and that might just get to chill out for a couple of days. i dont think yr has a car. i was thinking of renting a bike but thats probably not a good idea
YoungRemy
10-30-2009, 01:32 AM
so you are staying at the w on the west side of town?
you can explore the UCLA campus and you will be close to Will Rogers Beach, Brentwood, Malibu, Santa Monica and some other stuff that people mentioned. you won't be far from Venice. that's where you should go dude.
you can't really get around by bike or without a car to do any of the things you really want to do. I'm certainly not carting your ass around!

amoeba records. sunset and vine. right down the road from the Capitol Records building and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
i take back some of the things I said about hollywood. I live and work there and see the really seedy parts of it. it's not all glitz and glamour.
there's some decent things to do and some average nightlife that doesn't consist of waiting behind a velvet rope...
i guess for a noob they would want to see those things, so yeah.
also, you might consider visiting Griffith Park, home of the Observatory, the Greek Theatre, and Bronson Caves is a nice TV Land place to visit.
I'll look up that Brady Bunch house for you Bionic.
but you must know this city defines urban sprawl. it's just not going to all get done in a couple hours...
b i o n i c
10-30-2009, 03:25 PM
exactly, im staying away from as many velvet ropes or lines as possible.
i want to do more what average people do over there.. i know i cant see everything, but i will have a little more time than i previously thought. you and i must go have some beers and catch up (y)

I loved the Chinese food in LA, but fuck if I can remember where I went. I have a good time, and avoid handwritten fortune cookies.
