View Full Version : Which songs from TT5B have really held up?

I put That's it That's All up there, even with the dated Dubya line. I play it alongside When the Last Time cause I'm a dick like that. But I still like it.

In fact, now that it's passed the 'respect' stage where it wouldn't get any Mixmaster switch-ups for being new, it could be good live. Hell even as a set opener, fark knows I've been drinking.

Oh Word has held up remarkaby well, too. Word to Aunt Shirley indeed, Adam. Word to Aunt Shirley, indeed.

All of them...apart from the political references and LTI the rest of the Beasties back catalogue feels pretty timeless to me.

some still have great bits. the start of crawlspace for instance. ryhme the rhyme well is ok

oh word is beyond shit. all the bit about goats(n)

i have quite a lot of time for the rhymes more than the tunes but thats cos of fucking about with the acapellas more than actually listening to the album.

I think the whole album holds up, it's still a lot of fun to listen to. It's not an album you reach for when you want something deep and contemplative to listen to, it's just an incredibly silly and vulgar party album. I still listen to it on a regular basis, and I never skip a track on it, unlike Ill Communication or Check Your Head where I will skip quite a bit of the filler.

Open letter, hey fuck you, 3 the hard way, triple trouble, and check it out still hold up for me. I still regard TT5B as their weakest record, but it has its moments.

oh word and we got the are definitely 2 of their worst tracks ever.

Ch Check It Out, An Open Letter, 3 The Hard Way (love the big beat) and Rhyme the Rhyme Well. The rest of them are "meh." Anything with political stuff has dated terribly.

I dig "Oh Word"...very much

Love the elctro feel with clap track

never got into crawlspace or we got the, but everything else is solid going on excellent. it's been said, but i love the stripped down vibe and the lyrics are, to me, endlessly quote-able.

ch-check it out, right right now now, time to build, rhyme the rhyme well, oh word, that's it that's all and an open letter could easily stand up (and out) in any Beasties set.

I've been listening to TT5B again just this last week, the tracks that stood out for me were Rhyme the Rhyme Well, Time to Build, and That's It That's All.

No love for Time to Build (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRV6YHCMsEU)?

time to build is sick. the scattered beats, the sample on the chorus, the rhymes...i don't feel it sounds dated. all that was relevant to an era which has only just gone. definitely not a drawback.

None! That LP was a disaster. That's like saying what's your favorite MC Hammer track off of Look Look Look

The BBoys should buy every copy of that turd and send it to the same landfill that Atari's ET game resides.

LOL I used Wiki to see what's the last one he put out. But yea, I applaud that you noticed that

And on that note I'ma go look up Youtubes MC Hammers Turn this Mutha Out...Bc say what you will or may that was a Dope Track. And LULZY Video

"Hammer: You ain't hittin' in New Yawk?
WUT?
So Whatchu gonna do about that? Hmmer?
I'm Gonna TURN DIS MUTHA OUT!"

LULZ ALERT!!

MC Hammer's "This is What We Do" from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soundtrack is timeless. I'm willing to bet nostalgia is the sole proprietor of that statement, but nevertheless. :)

Doing a song for a shitty movie has proved to be a music careers killer.
Run DMC for Ghostbuster II
And I remember Hammer's last song was something from Adams Family...Wrecked it. That and his homeboy that had the 15" Fade didn't help things

But the Hammer song Turn this Mother Out though LULZY had a Dope Sugerhill Gang sample that I believe was Apache...Not sure of the band but know the sample was Apache....Crazy Large Song

BHH is always good but IKHT is dated as is TTOMO. I'm just more into PFTW and BBJTC these days.

"Ch-Check It Out" and "An Open Letter To NYC" still get regular play from me. The rest...not really.

The To The 5 Boroughs B-Sides still hold up really well. "And Then I", "This Government Needs A Tune Up", "Brr Stick 'Em". (y)

I think that has something to do with the fact that those tracks weren't deliberately retro and minimal. They didn't fit in the album because of that, but they maybe work better because of it.

Yeah, there are times when I think the B-Sides are actually better than anything on the album.

I was going to say that the one that held up best was Brr Stick Em. That still sounds fresh.

(I'm a sucker for Open Letter too. There's a moment during every trip to NYC where I listen to that on my ipod while walking. :o)

RTRW is nice. I always think of that remote control ep with the cover with the guys in the white long coats in a lab when I hear it. Scientists of Sound.

Alive fits in with this album, too.

OW, S and TTHW, mostly. OLTNY, TT and HFY are also ok, but RRNN, TTB, RTRW kinda sound more dated than the others. WGT and AL were never really that great to begin with. Btw, C and TB were unforgivably LAME.

I agree 100%- "Brr Stick 'Em" was I think the 2nd best track of that era after "Check It Out"

I used to hate TT5B. But I listened to it lately and I dig it. Yeah, some of the rhymes are dated now but the stipped down production works.

3 The Hard Way is good.
RTRW is awesome.
TT is good but I've heard it too many times.
I used to HATE Oh Word but I've decided upon further listening that the beat is sick and maybe the best on the album.
Open Letter is a classic.
It Takes Time to Build has a sick chorus but the verses are dogged with Dubya rhynes.
We Got The kills too.

Shazam! The Brouhaha and Crawlspace are the three worst songs the boys have ever recorded.

Heres the best TT5B era remix. Triple Trouble mixed with Streets of Rage music. Sick.
