Speaking of being classy,

I've always thought at the end of the WS that both teams should line up and shake hands, ala the NHL.
Never been a fan of just letting the losing team just walk off the field and letting the winners just dog-pile.
It lacks sportsmanship.

I remember that play but was not referring to it specifically. was that last night or Saturday?

I am referring to the errors that didn't get recorded besides the one Ibanez committed in the first inning.

hitting/walking leadoff batsmen (ARod and Tex) and putting them on base is never a good thing either.

and letting Damon steal second and take third was the crucial error of the night that didn't end up in the box score...

I mean Lidge had two outs and nobody on. damon worked that at-bat like a champ. had they kept him on first we don't know how it would have ended.

PHILADELPHIA - The fans at Citizens Bank Park better be more careful with their money from now on.

Additional security was installed in the outfield for Sunday night's Game 4 after fans spent the early innings of Game 3 on Saturday throwing coins at Yankees outfielders Nick Swisher and Melky Cabrera.

hitting/walking leadoff batsmen (ARod and Tex) and putting them on base is never a good thing either.

I'd rather hit ARod and put him on first, (and frustrate the hell out of him in the process) than give him the opportunity to hit. Also, fuck ARod.
I don't think Teixiera was done intentionally.

and letting Damon steal second and take third was the crucial error of the night that didn't end up in the box score...

They didn't let him steal really, he ran on a breaking pitch and therefore the throw was late getting there. Damon picked a great pitch to run on, a tip of the hat to him for it. Lidge should have covered 3rd. It's a freak play, the shift was on and he got caught out of position. Not the worst mistake in the world IMO.
It's not like he lobbed the ball 10' over the firstbaseman's head like Kazmir did in the ALCS.

I mean Lidge had two outs and nobody on. damon worked that at-bat like a champ. had they kept him on first we don't know how it would have ended.

He did what he was supposed to do. I give him credit for a great at-bat.
I've seen the Phils do the same thing numerous times.
Go watch Brett Myers at-bat against CC in last years' NLDS. Myers fouled off about 10 pitches until he got one to hit, and the fans cheered louder after every foul tip.
Knocked Sabathia out of the game.

P.S.

If anyone was reading the La Dodgers thread they would see that I have respect for the Phillies. This is an enjoyable series and a nail biter even if my team is winning. I have respect for the Phillies, they are a great team ( I've said a few times that it'd be nice if the Yanks bought a couple of their players)

This isn't a clean sweep, both teams are being challenged equally.

I'm not saying they shouldn't dogpile, or that it's unsportsmanlike.
I'd just like to see each team acknowledge each other after the fight is over.
It's something every kid learns from little league on up.

They can dogpile for a few minutes, gte up and lineup to shake hands.
And yeah, I'm saying that as a fan of the current reigning Champs.

( I've said a few times that it'd be nice if the Yanks bought a couple of their players)

Yankees and their fans will never understand that this is exactly why people hate you and why you're ruining the sport.
There will be a cap of some sort within 5 years directly because of the Yankees inability to control themselves.

Their payroll is almost double that of the Phils, (Yankees $201m, Phils $113m) and the Yankees don't even have a 4th or 5th starter.
It's obscene.

kaiser soze
11-02-2009, 03:48 PM
It still doesn't buy World Series though....the Yanks haven't been since 2000 and their last pennant was in 2003.

I bet a cap won't happen, from 2008 to 2009 the Yankees payroll dropped while the Phillies payroll rose, so there are fluctuation and pricey players don't always deliver (believe me I've bitched about our expensive players not performing well)

Oh and yeah I have TONS of influence on how the Yanks handle their payroll, blame me for it please.

I have been a fan of the Yanks while they sucked ass and yeah I'm happy to see them in a World Series again and hopefully win this time.

Lidge gets some blame, but he didn't flat out blow the series for them like he did in Houston.
He's had a shaky year. Everybody was almost expecting Lidge blow a crucial game in the playoffs this year.

I blame our lack of offense more than our pitching really. We've gone through these "feast or famine" type of streaks all year. We were feasting in the Rockies and Dodgers Series, we're going through a famine with the Yankees.
I've seen this team destroy better pitchers than what the Yanks are throwing at us too. They just aren't hitting.

This is what I'm saying.....our pitching isn't dominating, your hitters are having a hard time delivering (same with ours). In fact I'm convinced the Phillies are out pitching us....we've had some loOoOong innings on defense.

Even our hitters are suffering. This isn't a slamming series, the small plays are winning it.

IF the Yanks are ahead and in control of the game in the later innings, Utley's getting plunked.

Benches could clear if it happens.

Oh well, we planned and played poorly - mostly hitting which I give Lee credit for kicking our asses. Why do we continue to pitch to Utley? HP Ump squeezing our pitchers. Yanks looked lax prior to the game, Phillies had no choice but to win.

This could go back to the Bronx and we can only hope for an inaugural win for Petitte in the new Stadium.

Like I said, this is a series both teams are working for, were being owned this game

Good Question.

I think Rivera, Pettitte and Damon had a shot going into the game. Pettitte didnt pitch good enough to get MVP and Rivera was solid but 2 games he pitched weren't even save situations. Damon had a shot but did nothing last night because of his injury. Matsui had one monster night, a pinch hit home run and a home run that broke the tie in game 2.

Yes it is odd that a guy who barely played three games is the most valuable, but oh well.

As if earning the distinction of managing a team to a World Series victory wasn't enough, Yankees manager Joe Girardi acted as a Good Samaritan on Thursday morning.

Hours after guiding the Yankees to a World Series title, Girardi came to the aid of a 27-year-old woman involved in a car crash on the Cross County Parkway in Westchester County, N.Y.

Hey, I watch baseball every night of the week.
I grew up playing all the way until HS.
My Grandfather coached and taught me how to play.
I handed the tradition down to my kids by coaching and teaching them how to play.
Every one of us have been diehard fans of the Phillies.
I have invested a lot of emotion into this team throughout my life.

I don't know if you have anything in your life that your entire family shares in common like that, but yeah, I don't see why it's so funny that I'm dissappointed that my/OUR team lost to a bunch of cheaters?

i have a similar background and also really bummed about the Phillies loss....i grew up watching them on WTAF back in the diz-ay with HK on the mic....

It isn't the end of the world guys

We all love the game above and beyond the majors, I played (right field to left to third to second base) and plan on teaching and hopefully coaching my son as well. I wasn't lucky enough to have a major league team in my hometown but spent many days at War Memorial Stadium (http://www.buffalohistoryworks.com/photograph/photographs/war-memorial-2.jpg) burning the shit out of my knees while I cheered on my losing Buffalo Bisons. We all love baseball, no need to be so fucking hateful about it.

I guess that means you have no retort for that then?

Girardi wearing 28 signifying the WS title he has yet to win, is by far one of the biggest jack-off moves I've ever heard of in sports.

Seriously tho, do you really think Girardi's a good manager?
He's an average manager at best. Damon and Matsui bailed his ass out of completely mismanaging his pitching staff. The guy you spent $161 million dollars on to be your ace got you exactly zero wins because he was overused, being pitched on 3 days rest. Same with the other guy you paid $81 million, AJ Burnett.

The easiest baseball managing job in the league is the Yankees.
All you have to do is decide which multi-million dollar player you're going to play next.

I don't see dollar signs when I watch Baseball, Hockey, or Football...I see a team I've grown to like through wins or losses. You can keep it political all you want

You can be cruel because your team lost, you can tell me how much the World hates me and my fellow fans and players, but honestly rob it just makes you look like a poor loser. I don't care what you think about the Yanks what I do care is that you just don't let up and you're cruelty. When was this when "the Yanks weren't the hottest ticket in town"?
I'm calling bullshit on this because I hear this excuse from every Yankees fan no matter how old they are. I hear it from guys that are 60yrs old, down to their 20's.
You're all full of it.

I think you're around 25-30yrs old, right?
So let's give you the benefit of the doubt and say you're 30, and let's say you became a fan as young as 5yrs old, and you've been a fan ever since.
That would mean you became a fan around 1984.
At that point in time, the Yankees were still the winningest team of all time. They still had the most WS victories. Steinbrenner's owned the team since 1973 and has been on an all out spending spree ever since. Long before you were ever born.

I mean, why the Yankees? What made them stand out from the other teams being you didn't have a pro team in your hometown?
Why not the Blue Jays? You're actually geographically closer to Toronto than NYC.
Why not the Mets?
Why not the stinkin KC Royals, or the Pittsburgh Pirates, or any other team in the league?
Why not the Philadelphia Phillies for that matter?

I'll tell you why.
YOU CHOSE THE YANKEES BECAUSE THEY WON THE MOST, THEREFORE IT WAS THE EASIEST TEAM TO ROOT FOR.
You want to be associated with a winner.
I'm not saying it's wrong, I understand it.
But please spare me the excuse of "I've been a fan since they were nothing", because they've NEVER been nothing your entire life.
They've been buying players since 1919 when they BOUGHT Babe Ruth from the Red Sox so the Sox owner could produce a Broadway show, all the way up until this year when they paid 3 human beings half a billion to come to your team.
It's like being in a car race and everyone has a Toyota and one guy has a Ferrari. And when the guy with the Farrari wins he sprays champagne in the face of the Toyota drivers and congratulates himself being able to buy himself an unfair competitive advantage.
It sucks. And the Yankees suck. And so do all of their fans.

Lets see the two SP's that played the most were cliff lee and pedro martinez... guns for hire if you will. Brad Lidge and Raul Ibanez were bought by your little theory too. I mean how do you root for these guns for hire?!!?

And before you cry about your farm system being traded away, don't forget guys who came through from the yankee farm system like carlos pena and alfonso soriano were all stars for other teams. Just two off the top of me head....

The yankees payroll was less than it was last year, while the phillies payroll increased? what happened there? did philly try to buy thier way back into the postseason? nahhhh.... they aren't a new york team soo uh uh uh they did it the right way.

The mets and cubs have the 2nd and 3rd highest payrolls in the mlb... they are both nl teams. Yet the phillies are above and beyond the best team in the nl, especially now with cliff lee. Pay roll means shit. Thats why the yankees do not win it every year. Thats why they missed the playoffs last year. Thats why teams like the Rockies and Rays can win thier division and make the playoffs/world series.

Stop with the typical jealous philly attitude.... its the same shit you displayed when the giants beat the patriots and you had to jump in to say giants weren't the best team. We get it. You don't like New York.

You're an idiot.

1. Cliff Lee - We traded 4 top prospects from our minor leagues for the opportunity to have him for a year and a half. After next year he could leave as a FA.

2. Pedro Martinez - He was sitting at home until August doing nothing. Every team in the league said they had absolutely no interest in him, that he was finished and had nothing left. Pretty ballsy move for a defending world champ and currently leading their division with a chance to make another run to take. The Mets told hiim they had no interest in even working him out. In other words, we picked him up off the scrap heap. We didn't go out and buy him for $161 million dollars.

3. Brad Lidge - They couldn't get the guy out of Houston fast enough. He blew the WS for them. We gave them Michael Bourn for the opportunity to have him for a year, then we had to resign him. Michael Bourn is their current leadoff hitter and starting CF. He's an everyday player and borderline All-Star. He led the NL with 61 stolen bases.

4. Raul Ibanez - Yes, we bought him. He was a high priced FA. You got this one correct. BUT, we chose to let Pat Burrell leave. Yeah, I know Pat Burrell sucks, but remember he had just performed pretty well for us and helped us win a WS title. So letting him walk for Ibanez was a mildly controversial decision in Philly. And let's be honest, Raul Ibanez is no 8yr, $180 million dollar player like your team buys not just one, but TWO of. CC & Teixiera.

Phuck the Yankees. Ridiculing your team for being the obnoxious losers that they are makes me feel better.

The playoff roster totaled $113m.
That $130m included people like Geoff Jenkins and Adam Eaton who we cut in the spring and we bought out their contracts. Also Jamie Moyer & JC Romero who were injured and not on the playoff roster.

I'm guessing they will decline starting 3rd baseman Pedro Feliz's $5 million dollar option too. They'll pocket the money and bring him back for less as a FA, or go in another direction.

2) Your spending theory is shot to shit when i bring up teams like the Rockies and Rays. Your analogies are boring for the most part but I would like you to explain the ferrari in the toyota race. The ferrari does not win every race, in fact it only won 5 in my lifetime....ready? go.

3) Yankees had more home grown farm players than the phillies, but you asked us how we are supposed to root for the "gun for hire" team? Ask yourself.

Come on,,, why don't you just come out and say it; If the phillies lost you already had the built in excuse ready to go. Honestly if the yankees rattled off 15 of the next 17 championships then yes, maybe payroll is a distinct advantage. I've already shot down everyone of those "questions".
Multiple times.
You'll never get it. I'm not going to keep typing the same facts over and over just for you to ignore them.
Your team spends 200m, and the next team is spending 130m on down, but it's a fair competition. (y) I hear you loud and clear, bro.

The fact of the matter is that the Yankees have no choice but to outspend the entire league by almost double.
As I've already proved with kaiser, all Yankees fans are as fair-weather as they come.
They entire reason ANYONE becomes a fan of the Yankees is because of the Championships. If it wasn't, you'd be a Mets fan.

If the Yankees spent inline with the rest of the league and competed fairly, they'd only win once in a while too, and all the bandwagon fans would not even pay attention anymore.
There are too many other distractions in NYC for anyone to stick by a losing team faithfully.
They'd have to move to California the same way the Dodgers and the Giants did.

And as for the Arod vs Pirates FACT,
I'm talking about the Pirates payroll at the end of the year, not the begining.
Yes, the Pirates started out with a 45m. payroll, and then they had TO SELL OFF THEIR BEST PLAYERS, Nate McClouth and Adam Larouche, BECAUSE THEY COULDN"T AFFORD TO KEEP THEM BECAUSE THEY CAN"T COMPETE WITH THE 'HAVES' OF THE LEAGUE.

Get it yet?
Thanks for making my point for me.

i didnt really want to get in on this stupid back and forth about the yankees and whether or not their fans are true fans or not... but seriously, there are some seriously faulty arguments being thrown around.

lets start with this: i am a yankees fan. have been since 1992. that was the year i arrived in canada, and the blue jays went to the world series, and i had never seen baseball before 1992, but that year, i watched it with my dad. we both learned it. and the yankees were the team that wore those dapper pinstripes, and they were from the city we were going to live in. so they were fucking magical to 10 year old me. i started playing softball. i had NO coordination, and that giant fucking ball bruised the fuck out of my body. (oh and the yankees kinda sucked in 92. i mean, not terribly, but not winners. not like the blue jays frenzy that swept toronto. and i was living there during that time! mattingly... i remember mattingly...)

cut to the summer before my freshman year of high school - 1996. my best friend's dad took us to see the yankees that summer. i fell into deep teenage lust with derek jeter. i watched/listened every game after that, listening to it on the radio because i wasn't allowed to watch tv all that much. the 96 series was just about the most exciting thing that had happened in our silly little teenaged lives. it was the most normal and american thing about me at the time, when i was still mostly an immigrant.

after that, yes, i rooted hard, and they were an amazing team in the late 90's. holy shit, they were on fire. i could have found another team to root for, i couldve rooted for the mets, but they were a joke! i had pledged my allegiance to the yankees already, how the fuck was i supposed to know it wasnt cool cause they spent a lot of money?!!

as a bit of tmi - the first time my first bf and i did it, it was while watching a yankees game...

now, i KNOW im not the only one with a long story about how they became a fan. nearly everyone i know that's a fan has their own. every fan of nearly every sport has a story about how they came to root for the team they root for. so why is it so wrong for the yankees fans to like the yankees? not only that, but every SINGLE team, when they're doing particularly well, get fair weather fans. there is no way in hell you can deny that. maybe the yankees have more fair weather fans? maybe. it's a big fucking city and bigger fucking state, not to mention the reputation they've garnered. but it's not impossible to consider that there are fans who are committed to being fans, all the time. and the whole money thing, about buying a team... if the point was not to buy the best team possible, then the MLB should have set up some regulations. baseball, like most other sports, is a business. and in business, it takes money to make money. but i dont think that just because they pay some of the members of the yankees insane amounts of money that they're any less committed to being a yankee than any other guy playing for any other team for any regular chunk of change. this is the same in nearly every sport i know where great players are compensated handsomely. and it's true in sports where you're not compensated at all! a person will play hard and fight for the team they're playing because that's proper sportsmanship.

thasit.

my father didnt gravitate towards the yankees. he gravitated towards baseball. he watched them all, rooted for none. maybe the blue jays, if anyone. I remember him being really happy when the blue jays won the series. I gravitated towards the yankees with my very own little brain. I actually taught my dad about yankees history, after reading every (easy) book on the subject i could find in my local library during the summer of 1993. (reading is how i learned english, i spent 1993 reading.)
you have to realize that there are people who just connect to a team at some point for some reason. i had no clue the mets were from ny until that time of reading. my dad took us to our first game that summer, mets 1993. it was a fun game. i had no allegience to the mets though, i dont know why they just didnt seem as exciting. that happens. to some people it happens through childhood, to some it happens randomly as they grow up, some people dont find that until they're older. fans are fans, and it's silly to debate the merits of who's a better, more dedicated fan. there's always someone with the biggest dick, but that doesn't mean that the team doesn't mean something to someone in their own way.
