View Full Version : i want to make a pizza sandwich
i'm going to a sandwich-themed party on saturday. the theme is that everyone brings sandwiches and we eat them and get massively drunk. last year i brought a "pizza sandwich" which was actually just slices of cheese pizza in between two slices of bread. it was a big hit, people actually even ate them.
this year i want to follow up with another pizza sandwich but i want it to be an actual sandwich, with pizza ingredients inside. like a calzone, except not. i want to melt some mozzarella cheese and maybe have a slice of tomato and some pepperoni and...that's it, that's all i've got so far. i'm also not sure what kind of bread to use and i'm not sure how to cook it to get the cheese melted without fucking up everything else because i'm literally that bad at cooking that i don't know how to melt cheese without breaking something, don't laugh or yell at me
suggestions for ingredients and cooking methods are required! i'm especially curious to know what kind of bread would work. i feel like it should be pizza-like.

Black/green/Kalamata olive bread would be pretty sweet. You should be able to find it at any grocery store with a decent bakery.
Jalapeno cheese bread would by my second choice.
regardless you should put some pickled pepper in your sammiches.
you should slather a bit of pizza sauce on the bread too, just a thin layer though so it doesnt get too soggy.
slices of green pepper would probably be tasty in there too.
I'd cook those bitches open faced too then close them post baking.
go to panera and get a french baguet, slice it down the middle. make sure you toast both sides of the brear slightly before applying the sauce and cheese and other ingredients. add all the shit on top and put it in the oven on broil. add peperoni, green peppers, and onion. or make a greek themed one - even tomato feta spinich

i'd take ferns bread idea with heiress's ingredients
i'd think something with a hearty crust on it would be best
yeah a good strong crust seems appropriate. french bread seems like the most obvious answer. but maybe...too obvious.
i was wondering about the pizza sauce thing - it seems like it might make things too messy or soggy and besides i think it might be taking the pizza sandwich idea a bit too literally. what do you think about diced tomatoes?
what about focaccia? that feels like it could work.

like an americanized bruschetta?
i suppose diced tomatoes would work, but at that point, why not just slice them so they don't fall off and go everywhere?

i was thinking i'd mix them in with the cheese so that when it melts it'd hold everything together. do you think sliced would be better? that was another idea i was considering. i guess it would also make it more like a sandwich and less like a pizza, which is what i'm going for

this is ghetto as hell but my dad used to take hamburger buns, open them up, put some cheapo marinara sauce, shredded itallian cheese blend and pepperoni on them, then throw them in the oven. somehow it was super delish. the hamburger buns actually got quite yummy in the oven. an added benifit to this is that it's incredibly cheap.

that's....kind of brilliant and kind of exactly the level of quality that these people are expecting from me, i think i might do that. thanks!

^ on a similar note, a pizza shop nearby used to have these delicious pizza bagels.
they are exactly what you would think. cut a bagel in half, toss pizza stuff on it, stick it in the over. it was like 3 or 4 bucks for one.

:D
let me know how it goes
oh yeah, i never posted about how it went
i was shopping for hamburger rolls but as i was doing so, i stumbled upon some bulkie rolls and decided that that was even better so i used those. i used pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, green pepper, and pepperoni and cooked it in the oven for 15-20 minutes. i never actually ate one (that party had so many sandwiches (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=1709318&postcount=27464), i didn't want to fill up) but i wasn't totally thrilled with how they came out. it wasn't quite as clever as last year's pizza sandwich, i think people were disappointed.
doesn't matter, sandwich day was still a success
