i write all the copy for our publications, and you will be pleased to know i successfully managed to get "his freeloading visiting brother spends most of his time draining a cyst on his neck" into the brochure. yesssss.

it didn't seem like a typical coen brothers movie.

it was ok; i don't really see what the big deal was though

you're nuts.

I thought the movie was tops. I could've done without the older couple sitting next to me who kept talking about who the actors were without actually knowing who they were, i.e. "it's that guy, you know...from..." *silence*. I LOL'd at one point when the lady said "ohhh, I thought sheee was going to be the rabbi" (in reference to the 3rd rabbi's secretary). I was all, wtf? why? fuck you.

at any rate, it prompted me to watch No Country for Old Men and Barton Fink in the last week, so I could get all filled up on quality Coen.

it's his uncle! ohh noo! stop the presses!

well, unless they just call him "uncle"? because he's the kid's uncle?

yeah that was his brother, so the kid's uncle.

I saw it about four or five weeks ago and Carter Burwell's score is the thing that stuck with me...

it's supposed to be a modern interpretation of the story of Job

SPOILERZ BELOW LOL

To me, the movies main theme is the only thing certain in life is uncertainty.

The dybbuk scene for example...you have no idea if the rabbi was actually a dybbuk or if he stumbles out the door and dies. This is reinforced in the credits as the actor is credited as "dybbuk?".

The closing scene....you're supposed to walk away and ask "what happened?"...the assumption one can draw is that Danny dies in a tornado and Larry has a terminal illness. However, who is to say? The movie never reinforces this point. Larry could just as easily have a serious but treatable illness, and Danny could eye the storm before running for the basement of the school.

If you go into the movie watching it with the concept that it is based solely on life being uncertain, there are a lot of things in it that make sense. Scenes that otherwise came across as confusing the first time watching suddenly made sense because they didnt make sense...ya dig?

Basically, leaving the movie and saying "I didnt quite understand" is exactly the point. You arent supposed to get it. There is no full on conclusion or answer, because life doesnt afford us that luxury.

*biiiiig bump*

This movie is perfect. What I gathered from it is that the answer you find isn't always, and in fact most often, isn't the answer you're looking for. So true.

I think they achieved something visually that's quite fucking spectacular. The sets, costumes, and cinematography are immaculate.

Best movie of the year, possibly the best Coen Brothers effort but I need to see it again before I say that for sure. I'm even more excited for the second viewing than I was for the first. (y)

oh, man

I was pretty disappointed by this, because I was expecting so much. but I can't put my finger exactly on it.

It was well made, well acted and all, but something was...missing.

I think they needed to cut out some of the events, and concentrate more on the key ones. It just seemed to zip along a bit too much. Im pretty sure its supposed to be based on the Book of Job, about life throwing shit at you and how you deal with it, but I think they missed the target.

It's OK, good enough. But not great for me.

I saw this shit for the fifth time last night and I still laugh my ass off.

The GIMME THAT FUCKER kid is my favorite.

I dont buy the whole Book of Job analogy at all. The only reason he even turns to God at all is thru the reinforcement of his peers. I think its uncertainty. Thats the theme of the damn movie and Im sticking to that.

In the dream sequence with Sy Abelman, he references "The Uncertainty Principle" and states that "you can never really know whats going on".

The goy's teeth....again....a completely unnecessary story with no resolve.

The property line issue with his neighbor...no resolve, left uncertain.

Arthur being accused of sodomy...."I didnt do anything", no resolve, left uncertain.

The opening....no resolve, left open to interpretation

The ending....no resolve, left open to interpretation

Was the changing of the grade and the telephone call directly after purely coincidental or an act of god? Its basically just an illustration of the fact that life is little more than a series of open ended questions and there really is no answer.

Life zips along as a result of all the seemingly insignificant events that occur, thus making them significant in their own right. Kinda the point, methinks...
