I have a lot of those albums and some are very good. It's not a definitive list and there are some notable exclusions.

Also, the Wild Beasts album has only been out a few months and does not deserve to be in a top 50 albums of the decade list, despite it being awesome and one of the best this year.

I bought half of them, but only listen to half of what I did buy. Considering the source, the list could have been way worse.

But yeah, YHF and Songs For The Deaf should have been higher up, Rated R should have been included, The Libertines should have been off the list (#2???), Kid A is better than In Rainbows etc. I wouldn't know where to begin with fixing this.

Wincing the Night Away as the best Shins album?

Gold as the best Ryan Adams record? Over Heartbreaker?

Right...

in this country, the music press treat the libertines as the stone roses of their generation really. i think they were ok but they are considered to have pioneered a sound that a lot of bands in the list, particularly the arctic monkeys, use. its why doherty is still popular despite the fact he's a smackhead loser

You shouldn't be proud of the fact that you don't own Kid A, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, White Blood Cells, etc. Jeez.

I own more than a dozen of those, but the rankings are completely fucked up.

yeah, its like they made it up as they were going along, like they thought about original pirate material and still had it in their head 6 albums later and thought ooh shall we put the second, sub par piece of shit they made in at number 15?

oh and rory mc - primal scream four out of 10. (n)

so do we have no real complaints about the strokes being placed on the top?

i admittedly haven't heard most of these albums as a whole, so i don't really know what to say other than my personal favorites are not on the list.

Yeah. I think that's bullshit. I bought that album when it came out and listened to it three times. It's not bad But it's def not the best of the decade.

Out of this list I'd put Relationship of Command & Kid A as the one-two punch. I'd move The Avalanches waaaaay the fuck up towards the top 10. But I don't know anymore than NME does, so I'll go fuck myself now.

OPM is a work of genius and nothing mike skinner did after came anywhere near it imo. it was the sound of lad taking a load influences and original ideas and its brilliant. A Grand.. is the sound of someone who had made it, believing their own hype and trying too hard, it was a nice idea for a concept but just thought it was lacking in tunes, but thats only my opinion. dry your eyes is awful.

check the one good one bad thread - i just put two streets songs on there

tbh, my mate told me about this list and asked me to guess the number one and i knew it would be the strokes, the nme holds them in very high regard, i dont agree but its stood test of time.

obviously im an old fart who is in the minority and maybe its just that i think OPM is such a great album that everything else is done pales into insignificance in me eyes. never mind

This is a flawed list, I like the Strokes OK.... but that album "This is It" has a few highlights, but mainly it was a hit and miss record. Generally speaking it was boring. There are several albums not on this list I can think of off the top of my head that ace that Strokes album.

Weird list that reminds me why I never read NME.

Compared to what is listed I'm surprised Beck and Bjorks subpar offerings (vespertine and Guero being notable the better releases) didn't make their way in.

other artists I am surprised not to see

Coldplay and U2 for obvious reasons
Andrew Bird
Portishead
Flaming Lips
MGMT
Tool
R.E.M.
Chili Peppers
Travis
David Byrne

just to name a few

lol@Kid A at 14 and In Rainbows at 10. Have they actually listened to either album?

The only one in the top ten I would even place there is Fever to Tell.

11-20-2009, 08:25 PM
The Libertines(#2) were cool on like the first few listens, then you realize that yeah "Hey I would like to actually listen to the real Clash" rather than a dime store attempt.

One of those easy to find CD's in the used music store racks. I never could quite understand all the adulation with that band.

NME is a joke these days. I used to read my brother and sister's copies in the 90s and back then it was funny, cool and significant. Now it just seems like a confused advertisement for everything and anything.

And A Grand Don't Come For Free is definitely a better album than Original Pirate Material. Both 9/10s in my opinion.
