Do any of you do any volunteering in your free time? I did some random volunteering last year then stopped....decided to start up again since I've got way too much free time. Today I volunteered to serve lunch at an HIV/AIDS outreach program here in Boston. Must say, it was very rewarding. Looking forward to helping out again!

Oh yeah..I work for a nonprofit which relies heavily on a volunteer component to operate our programs…so for we salaried employees it’s an unspoken but mandated expectation that we donate some of our time, particularily to sister agency’s…I’m in the midst of working for our annual Christmas wreath campaign so I go out on Sunday’s and deliver wreaths, then we all go to a jazz jam and feel good about ourselves…in January I will be teaching ESL to clients of the women’s immigrant association and once a month I give a day of labor here: http://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/

Not really, but in a way - yes.

I'm a member of the Green Party so try to do as much stuff for them as I can but being insanely busy doesn't help. It'd be kinda cheating for me to say doing stuff for political reasons is volunteering but like you say, it does feel good to do stuff that you believe in for non-profit.

But good on you guys, selfless work like that makes the day of those less fortunate than ourselves. (y)

thanks for that - have you done other stuff with them too? it looks pretty cool, there seems to be a shitload of stuff going on on any given day. so if i'm ever bored i can just sign up and do something so i'm not just sitting around like a lump waiting for phone calls from women or employers

just signed up and am doing the orientation tomorrow, hope it's as good as i think it'll be. i don't suppose that the volunteers get fed at these things as well...? not that i'm just doing it for free food mind you but well, i do get hungry

I volunteer for Minnesota Public Radio and the St Paul Chamber Orchestra. Fringe benefit = free shows. As you can see, I mostly do it for selfish reasons. :o:(

Yahoo, Bob!! Volunteering really does make you feel good...so great to help others.

I just joined a few weeks ago...I have only done 2 things. I helped serve dinner at the Veterans' shelter downtown and then the Boston Living lunch today. They didn't let me eat at the shelter...was only there for about an hour. But at Boston Living they did let us eat lunch before serving everyone. I was there for 4 hours.

So nice to see other people are able to donate a bit of their time to those less fortunate. The BBMB community is truly amazing! (y)

I met a women once when I was giving blood - got her number but I never called her. Man, I wish I did. She even kinda chatted me up to. I might of being seeing some1 at the time I suppose (can't remember) but I now regret it.

Lesson = make yourself available to every1 no matter your current circumstances.

I've volunteered to do the lights at friend's band's gigs.
It's easy. You just sit there flicking the switches or fading on and off in time to the music.

I volunteer my arm at the blood bank every 8 weeks or so.. I have A- blood and they say it's fairly rare, so I do what I can. Don't know if it qualifies as volunteering..

I've done a ton of stuff through school, but the most awesome thing I did was help build a playground in a not-so-rich neighborhood at a Boys & Girls Club with KaBoom! (http://kaboom.org/) a few months back. I happened to be in the area (across the street volunteering at another event, ha) and drove by the playground that -I- helped put together. I painted that bench! I screwed in the bolts for that slide! I hauled that sand! And now it's a safe place for the kids to play!

It's a badass feeling (y)

I milk homeless mens' prostates on the weekends. The key is to strike a balance between something beneficial to society and something you love doing.

I volunteer for the Stockholm Filmfestival for the fifth year on row. I realised I was spending so much money on the movies and there was more I wanted to see so I thought I'd better work for them. I've been a member for 18 of their 20 years.
