A friend of mine informed me yesterday that he decided to tell his wife of 14 years that he's been cheating on her their entire marriage and that he's leaving.

Yeah, I think you're pretty spot on with that, but you can't blame the media for publishing that sort of shit because the general public eats it up. I'll never understand women who sell a story like that, but then again I'll never understand how one man could be so careless and stupid when comitting adultery.
