no doubt the brits on here know all about this:
http://www.nme.com/news/rage-against-the-machine/48854
x factor single has had last 4 or 5 xmas number ones and xmas number one used to be a big thing until cowell got his paws on it.
to be honest i dont have anything against the x factor as such and am not going to download it to get at simon cowell cos lets face it apart from a charitable donation, some proceeds from DLing Killing in the name of will still go to a fat cat somewhere. (i have no idea about Rage's publishing deals etc)
I'm going to download it this week because its quite funny to hear it at the top of the charts after all that pop dross. i hadnt heard it for years till today and it blew me away at how good it still is. Plus i only have it on cassette :o
Its not the anarchic gesture that some people on the facebook page think it is. I still think smiley joe will get the number one and whatever rebellion plans are afoot its still all publicity for the x factor, but it was a nice idea.

The irony is in the fact that Simon Cowell owns several record labels since incorporated by Sony BMG, and Rage are on the Epic label, which is also part of Sony BMG, so basically people are still funding Simon Cowell's pockets in a way :O

absolutely, i do think that the x factor xmas single is a tired thing now though. it'd be nice to shake it up a bit and force them to do something different instead of just getting the winner to cover a miley cyrus piece of dross and fully expect it to get number one, it might make cowell actually try and earn his money a bit more.
I have no problem with the winner of the factor having success but i'd rather they went away for a bit and worked on a proper pop album than just put out a piece of shit after the shows finished. .

I DL'd it this evening despite already owning it.
Yeah, they're basically on the same label but thats not what its about, its about not accepting lazy turgid karaoke pop puppet shite anymore. Its been like the X Factor prize is a £1m record deal & a guaranteed xmas no.1.
X Factor singles are just safe syrupy dross. Does nothing for music in general.(n)
Fuck you Cowell I WON'T BUY WHAT YOU TELL ME!! MUTHA FUCKA!!!
Guy Incognito

to be honest i downloaded it because i heard it for the first time in ages and thought i should really have that on my pc and not languishing in my tape box. it sounds fucking great - took me back to jumping about at indie student nights with hair money and booze flying about. brilliant.

It's easier just to ignore the x-factor to be honest - the same as with 99% of crap in the charts. That's why when Radio 1 is on in the office, I just put my earphones in and drown it out. Ahhhhhh.
I bet Simon Cowell is loving all this publicity.
Guy Incognito
12-15-2009, 05:54 PM
its not about ignoring the x factor , for me its about saying this:
I quite like watching the show, its unintentionally hilarious and its even funnier after watching peter kays pisstake, it does entertain me but i would like it if the winner didnt put out a cover version of a sub par tune that is then mass marketed to all the saddos who actually fucking vote, they've already given you loads of money by ringing in. if you are going to put a single out, at least have the decency to get some songwriters to write something original or dont put a single out and work on a polished product that some will really enjoy instead of making them go to the shop like brainwashed idiots to buy whatevers cheapest and esiest to record. i just want them to put a bit more effort into the programme and after products, there's no point in ignoring it cos its still going to be there so if thats the case they should do more than the bare fucking minimum to earn thier dollar.

I have read some of this stuff saying Simon Cowell would profit from the RATM single. But from what I can tell, Sony own Cowells company (SyCo) not the other way around. So Sony get proceeds from both RATM and the X Factor dude but Cowell only gets royalties from X Factor dude. Cowell may have shares in Sony but still its not the same. Maybe I have misinterpreted the relationship but that is how it looks to me.
Anyway I bought RATM. Mostly because I like how the internet allows people to co-ordinate with each other to make an arbitrary demonstration of collective power. Its like a 'dont fuck with us' warning to those in charge. Nice.

Ahahaha of course i mean Joe x factor, unlucky 'cause your single is shit. God, i hope RATM beats it to No1. If it was a half decent song i might have thought it was a bit sour grapes but they deserve to be fucked off the top spot:)

Some say it doesnt, some say it does. Article here (http://www.your-story.org/download-rage-against-the-machines-killing-in-the-name-just-29-pence-70910/). It seems the wholesale price has to be over 40p, but it can be sold for anything. Infact, I just found amazons comment on the forum here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/tag/mp3/forum/ref=cm_cd_et_md_pl?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx28IXQIV6LBRU4&cdMsgNo=24&cdPage=1&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=Tx3U7MN4WDHUQUA&cdMsgID=Mx1V43X5O8FDTWD#Mx1V43X5O8FDTWD) (...assuming that is actually amazon staff)

It was either that or a cover of a miley cirus song...

I wonder if 'Killing in the name' will now feature on future Christmas compilation cd's? :D

fair do's if they did.
i am worried that despite this show of people power and telling the corporate money making machine to fuck off that they are going to use it to their advantage. I.E Next year on the factor they will have a phone vote to pick the winning song (from a selected list probably) thereby making it the audiences fault if its shit and making a lot of cash as well from the phone calls

comments from Joe McElderry fans , there's a lot - i got it from another forum but there are some truly deluded and hilarious people out there:
"RATM will just fade into obcurity now the campaign is over"
"the killin in name song was written about simon cowel and saying **** you to him but joe got robbed cus of it"
"Joe will be known in the music history books for decades. RATM will have no listeners in 10 years time"
"Rage are crap!!! Why did they write this song to fight Joe??? The song doesn't even mention XFactor I don't get it!!!"
"if rage r an old band y havent i herd of them. cuz i know most music from westlife to lady gaga to geri haliwel. if there an old band then y dont my mom or noone now them aswell??"
"OMG!!!! I'm never buying another song again! If the charts are gonna be full of americans swearing for no reason, then what's the point? What are they swaering about? X-Factor? Why did a TV show get them so angry that they wrote a song about it? They really should think of better things to write about, as they just look petty now. Well done Britain you idiots."
"i hope rage don't release their first album on the same day as joes one"
i think this is stupid joe should have number 1 and race against the machine are rubbish i feel so sorry for joe and i think he deserves to have christmas number 1 all this is horrible and race against the machine are absolute idiots they should be ashamed....
"The charts will have been contacted by the goverment and ordered to make Joe number 1 or public order could just have been destroyed for life in this country."
"I am really gutted for Joe, he just did not deserve this! The only consolation I can take from it is that I sincerely hope it turns out to be a good hard lesson for Joe and that he now realises there are evil people around, bent on wrecking others aspirations and dreams and I hope they can sleep tonight knowing they have hurt a really deserving person by their actions. The rage song is American c**p. Joe, despite this setback, you are the REAL SHINING STAR AND THE ONE AND ONLY CHRISTMAS NO.1 IN OUR HEARTS!"
why the f**k yous all dissing joe and whats he ever done to you ?!
he is an amazing singer and jus because yous wanted to get bac at simon cowell doesnt mean you've to hate joe !
im am so p**ses, are these n*bs actually thinking, its not just simon there anyoing there crushing joe's dream of a number 1 for christmas =[, heres a message for all those people, YOUR A BUCH OF F***ING T**TS!!!!!
"The great and good of the music world would spin in their grave if they saw the state of music now. The methods used by RATM have been nothing short of underhanded, manipulative and devioys. Yet, rumours abound that it was Simom Cowells brainchild to do this. So in a way he is the main culprit whose hands is stained with blood of the music industry. OK, that has been layed on thick, but I think what he has done is erode a bit of the moral fabric of the British music industry. Made it in a less respectable and credible state than just before the X-Factor hit our screens.
Yet one gets the feeling RATM may not even exist come January because one feels, going on the way Cowell is said to operate, it tends to be maximum effort for minium reward. RATM was designed purely to be a stumbling block in the way of whoever was the winner (whether it was Olly, Stacey, Daryl or any of the other finalists) and whatever was their Christmas song. Nothing else. Now theirs no race to be Christmas #1 and now X-Factor to try and beat where does his RATM go from here?
This is where Joe beats RATM. He has longjevity. RATM were a one-trick pony with zero support now. Their fans only bought their single because they didn’t want the X-Factor winner being No #1. Since it was purely to beat the X-factor where is the reason to support them?
The future looks bright. The future is Joe McElderry."
" i love joe and want to marry him and his song woz best. i might do somthing stupid i’m so upset an ur making it all worse."
"It's fake anyway. We all know Joe really won"
" joe should have got xmas no.1 all u people who downloaded rage against the machine are really strange"
"i love your version of the climb 2000 times better than mily cyrus (and i like that one loads) and i think it dosent matter wtha u won no1. coz u r well better than wateva ther called aniday!!!!!"
"over last nights fix in the charts, I think Simon Cowell is fantastic and this will only make him even better and bigger for next year, keep up the gud work simon:)"
"But Joe is soooooooooooo talented. Those old grandads in RATM are rubbish! What sort of song is theirs anyway? It's just noise, shouting (and EMO) and it isn't as beautifully uplifting as The Climb. Plus Joe's song means so much more to people! Love you Joe x"
"I bet RATM didnt even write there own song, atleast Joe wrote his"
"i thought the whole campaign was because people didnt like simon cowell. if we didnt have him we would have hardly any music in the charts. people should be grateful.
theres far more worse things going on in the world than this."

as stupid as those comments are it proves that RATM really aren't as relevant as people think. My 13 year old nephew bought killing in the name of on the back of this, he's a big rock fan and fairly well versed for his age but before this campaign he had no idea who RATM where and he couldn't give a shit about their political views. He likes it "because of the swearing"
and for the record i'm a fan of RATM before peeps get it twisted, but i'm old skool and think slade should be number one every christmas, or wham, or rotary connection etc etc

It depends on your use of the word "relevant". To not know is one thing, but to harbour such gross misconceptions about such a massively respected and culturally important band as Rage whilst idolising someone as lacking in artistic merit as McElderry does demonstrate some level of ignorance, wilful or otherwise.

I dont get why everyone keeps going on about sony. what has that got to do with anything?
proceeds from music are always going to go to one of three major labels, and theres always gonna be a fat guy rubbing his hands together over it.
i think you have to look past where the money's going. granted if you read into the message of the band/song it becomes a little bit hypocritical, but in doing that i think people are missing the point. this about not supporting the x factor.
that said, i agree with Al it should have been slade or the pogues.
