I think this movie looks gayer than Christmas in a snowy woods. The blue people freak me out and I am gonna have a hard time even renting this movie.

Kids will like it though, because this younger generation is retarded and has a short attention span and huge appetite for crappy movies.

this is exactly the reaction I had when seeing the trailer. I think it looks god awful. I will avoid it as much as possible until all the reviews (not just from London, but everywhere) are in, are mostly positive, and if people with taste in movies that I trust like it too. :p

Even then I'd go in as an extreme sceptic. And I think I'm stubborn enough and the creatures make my eyes roll so hard I still might not see it. I LIKE wonky, crazy creature shit and somehow they managed to make me roll my eyes!

If only Cameron, who also wrote the script, had spent as much time on the story as he did the effects he uses to tell it.

For all the grandeur and technical virtuosity of the mythical 3-D universe Cameron labored for years to perfect, his characters are one-dimensional, rarely saying anything unexpected.

Avatar falls short with its story, but it ultimately succeeds with its incredible special effects

And yet these were positive reviews, only rated on the positive end due to the effects, pure and simple. And from the trailer on TV screens and previews, maybe they just aren't conveyed as well as they are in the actual theater and so that is why I feel very skeptical about the effects. Mostly it's the creatures themselves that bother me.

Add to it that, as Freebs said, the story sounds like something that appeals to the RPG crowd which is not at all my thing.

Even if it is a major accomplishment for Cameron doesn't mean I'm going to suck his dick over it and shit myself over this movie before I've even seen it.

To me it was post-worthy because I was hoping to read someone's review of possibly an early screening of the film. I'm interested in that basically just because I was on the set probably a couple hundred times and I've been a fan some of Cameron's work. I didn't care for the trailer much either, but I still want to see this. Sorry if I was a bit harsh. Just woke up and got annoyed that I wasted five minutes reading people's opinions on the trailer. Visually beautiful!

saz

i saw it in digital 3d, and overall it's great (y)

the only negatives are the score (james horner dropped the ball here big time), the occassional bad dialouge ("numb nuts"), and some corny/sentimental scenes which are cliche, ie the big speech before the epic battle.

it's a very simple sci-fi action story but it's told extremely well and very well done. i want to see it again on mushrooms. the visuals are phenomenal, fucking beautiful, the performances are good (stephen lang as quaritch is really badass, dude's a tank, zoe saldana is good and sigorney weaver brings her a-game). in the trailer the na'vi look dumb but it definitely works on the big screen and even better in digital 3d. as you get used to seeing them, they appear more and more human. everything, the facial features, the attention to detail is outstanding.

Avatar was really much, much better than expected, that it looked amazing and that the story was gripping – if cheesy in many places. The terrible film that some had been anticipating had not materialised. It was good. The Guardian (http://widget.uproxx.com/b/3/http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/dec/10/james-cameron-avatar-preview).

If you can let go of your version and embrace Cameron’s – if you’re not, in other words, one of those splenetic internet fanboy types who’ve apparently made their minds up about Avatar before seeing it – then Avatar is a hugely rewarding experience: rich, soulful and exciting in the way that only comes from seeing a master artist at work. Empire (http://widget.uproxx.com/b/3/http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=133552).

An unprecedented marriage of technology and storytelling which is on the whole remarkably successful. ScreenDaily (http://widget.uproxx.com/b/3/http://www.screendaily.com/reviews/avatar/5008859.article).

Avatar could be considered James Cameron’s masterpiece. It’s the culmination of his career’s work, carries many of the signature throughlines and trademarks the director is known for, and seems to be a punctuation mark on a career filled with substantial genre milestones. Chud (http://widget.uproxx.com/b/3/http://chud.com/articles/articles/21826/1/REVIEW-AVATAR/Page1.html).

The film's rock-solid "A" CinemaScore rating, which, along with the raves currently streaming across Twitter and inundating message boards, suggests it will grow long legs at the box office well into the new year. the film was fantastic, up there with the LOTR and the Star Wars in my opinion.

I thought it wasn't long enough. most 2.75 hour films have you looking at your watch, I wanted to know more about their world, the history of the natives, what happened down on Earth, etc..

each and every single item in the world of this movie is a pretty neat little invention of Cameron. I'm glad he waited a while to let technology catch up with what he thought his vision should look like on film...

my overall theater experience was awful, so I think I'll catch it in IMAX next.

we missed the regular 3D showing so we had to take the next showtime, and it seemed like the audio track was turned too low in our theater. I know the audio in some scenes should have been more layered with the battles...

and then throw in a 40 minute wait at the concession line, I missed the opening scene and yelled at the theater manager for having the slowest, most incompetent staff members working on the busiest day of the holiday season for movies...

add screaming babies, families that walk in and out of the theater whwnever they want, and douchebags on their cell phones, watching movies at the theater is almost intolerable.

oh, and some critiques I read make me think a 12 year old blogger was writing the reviews.

like- they missed the entire concept of mind controlling the avatars and wrote that the avatars formed their own mindset and broke away from their controllers...

 it just annoyed me that they didn't get it

oh and the lead's UK accent leaks through sometimes and it's hard to believe him when he shouts Hoo-Rah!

in conclusion, A++

I have a little brother and he wanted to see it.

The 3D had a few moments of beauty, but that's all the movie had going for it because the story is nothing groundbreaking at all, as mentioned in other reviews. The movie was about an hour too long as well. So basically Ferngully/Dances with Wolves/Titanic (especially with that end titles song, jesus) in pretty 3D.

My boyfriend mentioned this and I agree: it would have been way better if it were an hour shorter and there was no main character. If it were all about the Navi vs Sky People only, it might have been pretty bad ass.

but the whole imperialistic, materialistic human shit... well... it's true, and even though everyone was a giant caricature, at least it gets people thinking about it a little bit.

after watching it tonight, this about sums it up for me

it wasn't in 3d, so all that wizardry was lost. still a decent looking film either way. either way, it was neither so good or so bad for me to really sway one way or another. i would consider watching it again on the big screen in 3d for a late night show.
