say it ain't so...
John Frusciante has reportedly left the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Musicradar.com reports a "source close to the band" says the band have been playing with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer for "a couple of months" and that the group are looking for Frusciante's replacement.
"Mentally, john checked out a long time ago," the source told the website. "He's interested in doing his own thing, his own albums — the whole big rock band machinery just doesn't appeal to him anymore."
But Klinghoffer isn't a full-time member of the band just yet. He will have to pass the test of whether he can "write great songs" first, according to Musicradar.
"Can he help push them forward?" the source told Musicradar. "Everybody knows he can play, but the Peppers need somebody who can come up with amazing material and get them moving again."
There's been no official confirmation or statement from the band about Frusciante leaving, so who knows if at this point this is all some big Steven Tyler-esque "he left," "wait, no, he didn't" incident.
If it's true, it wouldn't be the first time Frusciante has left the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He quit the band in 1992, when he was still struggling with heroin addiction. Frusciante rejoined the group in 1999 for their Californication comeback album.
Frusciante also has his own solo career and has released 10 solo albums to date. His music is far more introspective and experimental than the Chili Peppers' material.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been on hiatus for two years while the band's members have been working on other projects. In October, Smith told Clash Magazine the band planned to release the follow-up to 2006's Stadium Arcadium by October 2010.
