Just wanted to post a link to a song that kind of scared me a little bit when I was a kid, but the singer's looks definitely helped to make me feel better. :D

Ode To Billy Joe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZt5Q-u4crc), by Bobby Gentry

A somber folksy tune with a very spare arrangement, and uses a violin string section to great effect. Good enough that a movie was made based on its story.

FYI: the late 60s TV variety show she performed this on, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, had great comedy and musical performances but got pretty political and eventually was canceled for that reason.

Bonus spooky song :) again from the 60s which hit #1 for six weeks in 1969, that other sci-fi fans like myself will think is especially interesting:

"In The Year 2525" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Uw7phR9ucA) by Zager & Evans

After listening to these I recommend some De La Soul or Walkin' On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves. :D

Robby Benson was in the movie. The whole thing confused the hell out of me, but I was a pretty simple kid. If it was a reference to gay sex, it went way over my head.

Helen Reddy's song Angie Baby used to confuse me too. There were a lot of confusing songs in the 70s.

There were a lot of confusing songs in the 70s.IIRC I think a lot of people were trying to "find themselves" so there was lots of what I guess you'd call experimental thinking going on.

Timothy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGNdvKvbxYQ&feature=related) The Buoys (written by Rupert Holmes of Pina Colada (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrcQqCii4Rk) fame)

The 70's was balls out, Released in 1971, this tune hit # 17 on the Billboard Charts but because of the mature subject matter (cannibalism), it was banned and even censored by many radio stations!

cover from ian brown's latest albumThat is now in my Youtube channel favorites list. That was a good cover! Just different enough to sound fresh, but still stays true to the original's somber vibe.

"Timothy": Wow I've never heard that one. A good song...in it's own weird way. If I wasn't intently listening to the lyrics, going by the music I would never suspect it was about eating one's work colleague.

The 70's was balls out,Definitely a memorable decade, sort of a calmer version of the 60s but with questionable clothing design and (American) cars with lumpy styling. :)

I think I've linked to this before, but just in case....considering that 2012 is getting close, on the following site one can listen via Real player to the entire soundtrack of an interesting 1971 documentary that caused all kinds of controversy back then:

CHARIOTS OF THE GODS? by THE PETER THOMAS SOUND ORCHESTRA (http://weirdsville.com/featured11.html)

from that site:
Probably the best late-60's German pseudoscience documentary music you'll ever hear. Thomas combines crazed electronics, acid-exotica instrumentation, killer beats, and that haunting Title Theme into a cosmic score that goes way-out in search of Ancient Astronauts.I'm still looking for the CD version of this soundtrack.
