i'm absolutely terrible at buying jeans. i just have no sense of fashion. i'm paranoid of looking pretentious so i end up buying jeans that are completely out of fashion. i don't want to get into detail or post examples but suffice it to say i look like i'm from the 90's and/or eastern europe. which would work in eastern europe, but i live in a hipster neighborhood and until that kind of thing ironically comes back in style i look stupid

tell me what jeans to buy, i have no sense of this. something that a cool 25 year old would wear, but nothing that you have to actually be cool to pull off because i'm really not cool at all, i just want something unremarkable honestly

no skinny jeans plz

For the past, I dunno, probably 10 years I've bought the same style jeans from the same store in two different colours - black and blue. But its a UK store - http://www.routeone.co.uk/ and I am the only person I know who wears very loose and black jeans most of the time. So I doubt I have any sense of fashion but I dislike blue jeans.

I go for comfort is what I am saying. I think you can carry yourself better if you are wearing what you feel ok in rather than what others think you should be wearing. But I suppose that is the point, you haven't got that yet so you need help.

Sorry I wasn't any help. :(

cheap and easy.

go for straight legs, NEVER bootcut. and stay away from jeans that look pre-worn...you know with those stupid creases near the crotch. it's call "whiskering" and it blows and looks way too feminine.

don't be afraid of low-rise, especially if you have a small butt. (do you have a small butt?)

levi's are pretty good, it's too bad there's not a levi's store in Boston...because you can go there and they have a million different styles and the salespeople are really helpful. maybe you can look it up and find one in a neighboring town or something?

you could also go to Kohl's, they have a lot of levi's.

you need to just go and grab a bunch of different styles and sizes and try them all on to see what fits best.

above all, plain dark denim is the way to go. it's classic and manly.

I'm a really big fan of Levi's. Not the 50-whatevers, but their store in the mall has some pretty sweet stuff that fits the manfriend just perfectly. He's a skinny guy, and they're straight-leg and nice enough to wear to the office or a classy bar while still being super comfortable. They have great corduroys there too. They're pretty reasonably priced for the quality that they are...well-stitched, good material.

I think these are the ones he has:

http://us.levi.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2409556&cp=3146842.3146844.3146855.3146924

they look so awesome.

And yeah, I agree with Dorothy - that whisker wash shit sucks. These have them a tiny bit but it's not noticeable. The jeans at American Eagle Outfitters fit me well, but they all have that stupid crap on them and I hate it.

And the women's jeans from Levi's are badass as well. FINALLY found an amazing pair there that I plan on wearing into the ground.

you and I have the same kind of leg to waist ratio and the same taste in pants, I too fit into American Eagle but think their washes are pretty gaudy. and I'm wearing superlow 524 skinny levi's right now. got em for chrismuss.

those look nice, that's the kind of stuff i was looking for, thanks. dorothy's link was good too but they don't have them in my size. i'm 34x34 which is not tall enough to be tall, and not big enough to be big, but too tall to be available in most regular stores (or even online apparently). it's a bit of a pain in the ass

if you click around for different colors, they have more available. the site is acting goofy on this computer, but it looks like if you click on the last color square in the row of choices, they have them in 34"/34"

I'd go to the store and try some on first though.

something slightly fitted but not tight, enough room for your bits and pieces, and darker colors. anything too baggy risks looking dumpy. making sure they're the right length is also pretty important when it comes to looking put together. like just barely not touching the ground with shoes on. i say get that shit altered if need be.

i feel ya with the not being able to find things in your size... im an oddly proportioned size thats too small for plus sized clothes but apparently too big for regular sized clothes.

Never thought I'd be picking out jeans for another guy, but anyway...

My ex bought me these because she was sick of seeing me wearing my Dickies, and damned if they don't fit me better than any others I own.

Levi 514's - Slim Straight.

I've owned a lot of Levi's and these are just cut differently, and they were only like $30.

And doesn't this guy (http://la.racked.com/archives/2008/05/23/street_scenes_erik_at_kinney_and_main_streets.php) look hip in them?! :o

ive gotten the bff calvin kleins (http://www.calvinkleinjeans.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3462102&cp=3430140.3430282.3430298). he's dumb skinny and has super long legs and really nice tushy (seriously, i wish i had his legs) and the only style that doesnt make him look like an underfed child is straight leg. gap jeans are also pretty ok in the straight leg dept., especially when you get them on sale. they have decent colors.

i haven't really slept well since you began your quest for the perfect jeans. i try to keep holding on to a small shred of hope that one day you'll be united with a pair of jeans that absolutely blows your mind. then you don't really post for a bit and i'm left with this huge weight just hanging in the balance. this is bigger than you.

Bob

i found myself near a macy's today and managed to find some 514s in my size and they are definitely the most comfortable and best looking jeans i've ever owned so far, so thanks to the people who recommended them. but according to the tag i'm supposed to wash them as infrequently possible, and to "dry clean if necessary".

what does that mean exactly? how often is that? i'm certainly not about to start dry cleaning jeans

Dorothy Wood
01-11-2010, 08:37 PM
yay!

eh, just wash them like normal. I have no idea what that tag means, unless it's telling you how to keep them from fading. who cares, let them fade.

my last boyfriend used to wear jeans for months without washing them. they formed to his body. they looked pretty rock and roll, but it was gross. don't do that.

Bob
01-11-2010, 08:42 PM
yeah i've heard about jeans like that, that you're only supposed to wash twice a year or something nutty like that. that sounds gross, i don't want to do that

Dorothy Wood

I'm glad your quest has come to an end Bob.

Mine has sadly just started. My favourite pair of jeans tore yesterday so it will probably take me another year to find a pair that are just as comfy and don't look stupid.
For some reason all plus size jeans here are made from an ugly stretchy fabric, have those pre-washed worn-outie bits, and, worst of all, 'applications'. :s

Dorothy Wood

caribou, don't know if they have z. cavaricci over there, but they make some decent-looking jeans that don't look as if they're specifically for big girls. they're stretchy though.

(they do make some weird ones too though, I had some blue wide leg cords a couple of years ago that looked almost sparkly. got nothing but compliments on them however)

I don't think they sell those over here. Actually there arn't that many decent plus size stores or brands here at all.
Sometimes I get my jeans from the H&M BB collection, but it's only very occasionally that they have something that doesn't look like it's made for the over-fifties.

I had the perfect pair of jeans and they also tore and I went back to the shop and they still have the same brand of jeans, but for some reason all the models are now either enormously hot-topicly baggy, or they are so low that it shows your bumcrack even when you're standing up.

I do have some spare pairs of jeans, but they're all blokey models that look a bit weird and make it seem like I have a huge boner. (n)
