looking to make a trip down south to the big easy, and my route takes me through these two lovely states.

all i know is the route hits birmingham and hattiesburg as far as cities on the map go.

any thoughts/suggestions as to what, if anything, i could stop and see in those cities or nearby? i have a goal to visit every state, and i feel that this might be the only time i come close to stopping at either of these places.

Gulf Shores (AL) area is known as Florabama and has nice spots. Biloxi and Gulfport(MS) were nice casino towns before Katrina hit and are probably on the mend.

it looks like you are taking the 59/20 route and those towns are not exactly on that path. you would have to go due South at Hattiesburg and head a bit due East on I-10 to reach these destinations rather than head straight to N.O.

The drive from N.O. to the Florida border on I-10 is about 4 hours with those towns along the way.

I have done both routes before, Birmingham is a nice college town actually.

of all places, it's the first place I ever tried sushi in my life. there's little strip of restaurants and bars in town that all the younguns flock to...

I took a trip from Nashville to Greensboro Mississippi once. Saw a lot of poverty along the roads. If you stop in Greensboro, I'm not sure if they fixed the water yet. It comes out a clearish/brown color and is difficult to get off your skin when you shower. That was in the early 90s so perhaps someone finally found it unacceptable. Best cat fish fry I've ever been too. Oh lordy it was delicious.

google maps suggested i take 65 via nashville

chances are the stops will mostly be drive bys, but i am looking at stopping overnight somewhere in the vicinity. nashville is a little past halfway, and ideally we would do some sighting early afternoon there before getting a few more hours down the road before calling it a night.

don't know the exact schedule yet. but i'll probably live on caffeine for a week straight.

oh i see... the 59/20 route starting at Birmingham would put you through Hattiesburg though...

if you stayed on 65 all the way through montgomery and mobile, you would then head west on 10 and biloxi would be along your way...

basically, skip hattiesburg and take 65 south all the way down.

I haven't been down there since the year before Katrina. I thought Biloxi was a shithole, but I'm not big on casinos.

If it were me, I'd drive through Nashville and Memphis and then drive as fast as possible from Memphis to New Orleans. You've maybe already been to Memphis -- I'm a big fan. The civil rights museum there is really moving and Graceland is good for a giggle, plus there's the downtown stuff, music, good food, and liquor.

I went to a couple of weird museums and oddballs places in Alabama and Mississippi, including one with a lot of historical farm implements (more interesting than you might think) but I'll be damned if I know where they were. Nothing really memorable.

I was born and raised in New Orleans...so PM if you want some good big easy info.

Unfortunately there ain't that much to see in MS and AL that I know of. I know in Mobile they have some old war ship you can tour.
