I'm not complaining too much about my presents from my boyfriend this year...but he got me the tiniest t-shirt in the world! I suppose I should be flattered, but there's no way I'm wearing a skin-tight baby tee.
I think he was sad I didn't like it. :(
also, a t-shirt*? come on.
:p
*actually, it was a pretty cute idea, it has an inside joke on it. and he got me a couple of other things.

WTF ever!
My girlfriend gave me a Swiffer Wet Jet sweeper she has been talking about wanting (with refills)
and then she got me the Star Wars Prequels.....ok, she got the original trilogy so that made me happy, no Up though as I asked. 1 cd (compared to the 4 I got her), and and no Ov-Glove
my mom got me a fucking Snuggie, it smelled like China. I didn't ask nor never expected such a lousy gift....oddly me niece wanted one and was the only one who didn't get one so guess where my gift went.
women, they suck too at giving gifts
HATE THEM ALL.

whoa!
yeah, I've gotten some pretty crappy gifts from women.
sorry everyone, I was trying to be controversial. and made a thread before thinking it through.
maybe I can change the title to just plain "bad gifts"

A lot of men only visit shops for other than food for about twice a year. Its stressful and confusing at the best of times - add Christmas to that and you have your problem. I'm more concerned about where the nearest exit is than what I've just picked up to buy. Most of the energy is put into suppressing the urge to start snapping necks.
A lot of women somehow have the talent to enjoy shopping (like they do cleaning, laundry etc)

I like buying people stuff I know they'll like. my gifts pretty much always kick ass or are at least thoughtful. I think it's because I'm observant. example: my roommate was toying around with the idea of becoming a brewmaster, but had never actually made beer, so I bought her a beer-making kit.
once I couldn't think of anything to get my friend for her birthday, but I randomly found this weird mexican catholic flaming heart mirror thing at World Market that I knew she'd like because she collects religious stuff. got her some earrings that looked like they were carved out of bone, and a talking brain toy that was on clearance. then I wrote something clever in her card about organs and tissue.
anyway, I think of shopping like a game you can win, that's why I like it. getting people stuff they'll like is fun because there's a lot of crap out there, but when you find something cool and you can't use it, or you don't need it, but it would suit someone else perfectly...I dunno, it's just nice, to share something...to make someone happy with a little weird thing or a useful thing.
and that's my guide to gift-giving...voila!
oh dear, I am pretty baked right now. time to board the train to sleep town. yes sir.

well, if it's too big, maybe we can switch?
too small, and I guess our dudes just want us to wear tighter t-shirts.
also, I guess maybe I was just disappointed that he didn't get me anything from new york like he said he was gonna. :/ he did a good job otherwise.

i don't even buy good clothing for myself, so i wouldn't dare to try and get something for a woman
actually, both of my sisters asked for something that they could wear to sports games at my old college, and i didn't touch that because i knew i'd get something wrong with it.

I think I'm pretty good at giving gifts but I'm also older and wiser. And awesomer.
My mom gave me the remastered Ill Communication on vinyl for Christmas. She hit "rad" status for the holidays even though I don't have a record player.
I'm easy to buy for. If it says 'suitable for 9-12 year olds' on the box its generally suited for me to.
Jabumbo - you could of bought them a hat or a scarf or gloves or socks.
Safest gift I found you can get women that you're romantic with if you have no other clue is make them a voucher that says 'Good For One Expenses Paid Night Out at a Fancy Restaurant Of Your Choice' or something. That way, you don't even have to come up with a good place to eat, you get fed, you can at least give them something you've made (as in the voucher - make it pretty or something) and you get some at the end of the night. Its worth the £$ in the end cus you was gonna spend it anyway.

My boyfriend RULES at giving gifts! It's always something he remembers me talking about wanting or wanting to do. My last few gifts were especially epic: a 360 for our anniversary *dies* then going to Vegas to see the cirque du soleil LOVE show for my birthday/christmas combo.
Sometimes we give gifts just cause too, like books that we remember each other talking about wanting and whatnot.
The only gift that he got me that I probably wouldn't buy on my own was a t-shirt. It has a girl in a lotus pose with several arms holding various items like a smart phone and a video game controller.
He gave it to me and said "it's you!" haha. So I thought it was cute anyway and wear it sometimes. :)
I got lucky though. Most men in my past don't remember anything and sucked at gift giving. At least they tried, though.

The trick for me is to make sure I'm giving the person something they want rather than something I want them to have.
If I'm giving the latter, I toss it in as a compliment to the main gift.
The best gifts are usually the ones the person isn't necessarily expecting it, but it really fulfills a desire of the heart.
It's a great feeling to really nail it.
This past Christmas I managed one of those: A friend really loves this one particular book which takes place in the 1800's and is based on
a memoir which has been out of print for decades. He'd once mentioned he'd tried to track down a copy in college with no luck.
He convinced me to read the novel which I made my way through somewhat painfully. It's well-written but an absolute nightmare of how
horrific humans can be, and there's imagery in there that may never come out of my head.
Anyway, we talked about the book as I read along and exchanged ideas and whatnot. It's his favorite book (to my understanding).
So that's maybe... September or October. The book comes up in conversation now and again but more as a passing thing. In early
December I was trying to think of something and remembered the memoir. Lo and behold, there's a decent copy in the Amazon marketplace.
Now, this is nothing I would really encourage someone to read on my own, but I knew it would be what he wanted, and the gift was
for him, not me.
You should have seen the look on his face. I've never seen him look so happy. He wrote me a couple of emails that weekend thanking me
for it, but also thanking me because it made him re-think the gifts he gave to others. It still makes me happy to think about it.
I got my last last gf a dvd she wanted as mothers day gift from her 2 year old. She said it was the best thing ever.
And I was seeing a girl towards the end of last year who liked penguins so got a bunch of penguin stuff. Adopt a penguin. Teddy. A kids story book about a penguin etc.
But apart from those things I end up being pretty lame at presents.
