So my XP machine has run into a little problem not being able to boot due to a fucked up dll file. I tried all the fun stuff on the back end (recovery console) and still no go. No recovery partition due to corruption and no cd because the recovery partition was supposed to be the fix, fuck Compaq.

So instead of buying an XP home cd for 90 bucks, I just bought a new computer with far superior hardware/components/mem/storage, and Winows 7 which so far is quite impressive.

Due to a late last night I decided to do some Optimizing, cleaning, and improving my Windows 7 experience and discovered a website that'll give you many great ideas and tricks to personalize and improve your OS. I got my quicklaunch back, will be reallocating a virtually useless partition, got rid of all the useless bells and whistles, and improved boot and shut down times. Some things you can do in XP/Vista as well.

So if you're using Windows 7 and ain't afraid to do some tweeking check this out.

I havn't used Windows in 2 years, but I was on my sisters laptop yesterday and had a spin on W7.

Apple should sue over the "Dock", its the exact same. Shameless.

Although they just take the mick out of the similarities at the show-case thingys, so they probably just don't care.

At least Vista/W7 is an attempt to make the UI look modern.

yeah the dock thing, I believe it's optional because it wasn't there when my machine booted up. I have yet to find it on my machine but my mom's Compaq had it already on the desk top. It is a nice touch with the modern look (many of the features/animation can be disabled to improved functionality)

I've actually tweeked mine so it works more like XP - but there are some new features which are nice. I'm more impessed with the affordability of the hardware I got. Granted the machine needs a much improved graphics/sound card it is still light years ahead of my old piece of shit I was holding together.

If anyone is in the market for an affordable new machine check out the Asus CM5570 it comes with:

6 gb of ram
750 gb hd
Wifi
HDMI
Windows recovery disk (most other manufacturers create a recovery partition...not very safe, granted you can make a recovery disk in Windows 7)

Windows Home Premium does not support Virtual Machine/XP though, so you have to buy an upgrade to Professional

Sorry for sounding happy for having something nice and new for once.

Please keep all teenage, ehem immature comments to pm.

Thank god I never knew Vista, I guess it was hell for people who work in positions like "The Geek Squad" and shit.

Moving from XP (which I really didn't want to do) to Windows 7 is nice. I was lucky with the manufacturer I went with because they didn't load a shitload of bloatware, if any actually. So I didn't spend hours trying to remove pesky AOL registry keys and the like.

On the right hardware, it runs like a champ....boot time is about 5 seconds, shut down is 3 (you can actually establish the speed) - I'm sure XP had these tweeks, but the Windows 7 tutorials are still fresh and seemingly straight forward, so you get the best information rather than a bunch of convoluted shit years down the road.

The website in my first post is awesome for new 7 users who don't mind poking around their OS.

On the Dock tip....I've tried looking for a disabled dock on my machine and nothing so far

I did find this, and maybe some manufactures have an agreement with one of these programs?

Not really, just got a new desktop with the Windows 7 in the begining of December.
I just didn't need to shout about it from the rooftops.

I'll be sure to send you a PM the next time I make such a purchase so you'll be aware tho.

PS. Sorry about yours not having a dock. That's some str8 welfare windows 7 type shit.

well, I don't mind talking and shraing info about things I enjoy with other people rather than picking fights and acting like a bitch all the time

The dock is no loss to me, my desktop is nicely configured and I'm happy my machine didn't come with a non-proprietary dock (hot keys are the way to go) In fact that is one thing I hate about macs....when doing design work it gets in the way when I'm doing something at the bottom of the window and always popping up in front.

no loss, no straight welfare shit...I considered myself quite savvy around a computer/mac so I don't need my hand held with a dock. thank you

and yes my new machine kicks ass, sorry yours isn't worth bragging about.

Didn't you post pictures of some beer taps.....I guess that isn't showing off

I can post pics in the by gift purchase or other thread to complete your fantasies.

I've been using Vista for over a year and it has been absolutely flawless. I start my computer up and I'm online within 30 seconds... it would be 20 seconds if I didn't have it password protected.

Not one crash, not one issue with connectivity or virus attacks. I like Vista tenfold over XP.

That said I would not hesitate to purchase 7. It's spose'd to be even better.

yeah it's weird, some people hate it and some love it, I guess it depends on the hardware, SP, and build -

Vista is definitely no ME, but gets a bunch of comparisons

I'm looking forward to future customizations for 7, that is one thing windows has over mac....the ability to alter it (with the opportunity to fuck it up as well)

Have you hit up the link? There's a Vista Forum as well --- http://www.vistax64.com/

a lot of the problems vista had was because of the hardware manufacturers not making their shit vista ready.

vista was so vastly different from the last few previous windows, the hardware manufacturers didn't know what to do with it.

and some early things about vista just plain old sucked.

I've been running the Win7 beta on a machine in the lab at work and have been pleasantly surprised how snappy it has been. It's an old P4 2.8ghz. machine, with 2gb of ram. We had to "borrow" 1.5gb of this machine's ram to use in another machine, leaving it with a paltry 512mb, and Win7 still seemed snappy.

I've got a few applications I can't really afford to upgrade to a Win7 happy version. So I won't be upgrading any time soon.

You do know that you can still get new computers with Windows XP (http://www.dell.com/business/desktops?~ck=mn#subcats=&navla=80770~0~4587924&navidc=DT:%20Operating%20System&navValc=Windows%207%20with%20downgrade%20to%20XP&a=80770~0~4587924)? I just bought a new Dell laptop with XP Pro a couple months ago. The trick is, go to the business section of many manufacturers, and they still offer nice new speedy machines with XP. And the Plus side, The machine came with Vista Business edition, Downgraded to XP Pro, and with a free Upgrade to Windows 7 (they mailed the Windows 7 disk) So I came away with 3 versions of Windows, and all the drivers.
