View Full Version : No day like a snow day.
School is shut for the day. Back to bed!
I ended up getting to work - and there's about me and two people who braved it.
Should have stayed in

I set off for work this morning only to turn back halfway there as it was turning into a blizzard. As i approached a hill i noticed cars getting stuck and just sliding backwards - it was all rather hairy.
Also why do people insist on driving up my backside in the snow? - back up!! Grr.
So, Ava and I are holed up at home today. Bit cheesed off as i have to use today as a holiday day. Oh well.

I wussed out and came home inbetween jobs and of course as soon as i did it stopped a bit. School closed early though so figured it's allowed. But yeah, first sign of snow and we all go wrong. Same with too much sun, wind, fog you name it

i wasnt in work till half nine so missed a lot of the traffic and got there in plenty of time, piece of piss really despite it being hairy on the roads, got there , and about a fifth of the workforce was in so they sent some people home so they could work from home and once they got home they sent the rest of us home about 1pm.

Oh, sounds lovely! It's the same around here when it snows. Anyway, I'm at work, it is pouring down rain and dark. I am wishing I was where you guys are today.

well my oldest is only 3 so snowball fights are out although she did try and throw one at me but it landed on her welly.
also, forgot to mention that this morning i got to a big roundabout and it was at a standstill cos this van couldnt get up the motorway slip road so was blocking the other cars in different directions and instead of anyone helping him to push it out of the way, loads of people got out of their cars to swear and shout at him so this bloke got out of his van, got his flask of tea and sat in the back of his van having a brew laughing at everyone, brilliant(y)

how do you people get anything done in the wintertime if this brings everything to a standstill?
we've got 3 inches of snow on the ground with more coming down as we speak, and i've still got guys outside working on ground construction!

it happens a handful of days a year over here plus if ia mhonest most people see it and either panic and rush out along with loads of others causing a load of traffic, people start panicking or making stupid decisions because they think they have to rush which causes problems OR loads of people take one look at the snow and go back to bed cos they cant be arsed with all the faffing about getting in. we arent used to it , what can i say.
the only thing anyone working outside today in the uk is constructing is snowmen

We live in a temperate climate where it rarely snows, and when it does it usually doesn't stick. We have had half a foot of snow here, which is more than I've ever seen in my lifetime.
We do not have a lot of grit and snow chains because we don't need them other than 3 or 4 days every other year.

Yeah, this is exactly it. 364 days a year it is either mild, a bit cold or raining. The one day where it does something different the country melts down.

Okay, I have to take exception to you two snow snobs.
Where you live people are used to it, there is infrastructure to support it. Your busses have chains, you have departments and teams of people whose sole job is to get out and plow and sand and salt. You have appropriate boots, coats, etc.
That's not the case everywhere.
And I'm not sure about the UK but around here the topography makes things twice as difficult. You're not getting up or down Queen Anne hill in one piece when it snows without a ski lift.
So this is the day when our news show British people in snow as comic relief.
