Beasties news has been slow ever since the album release got put on hold.
This Roots compilation from Late Night is pretty cool. The quality isn't the best, and I don't really like the instrumentation on So Whatcha Want, but its worth checking out.

Was this the band's last performance on TV? For some reason I cannot
recall if it was.

If you recall performance as in musical performance - then yeah (beastiemania.com/tvshows/).
But Adrock was in that Top Chef desserts thing i '11 and according to IMDB also in a show called "Funny as Hell (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2993484/?ref_=nm_flmg_slf_3)" (I haven't seen it) in '12 before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction.
Mike also did that Hip Hop Semantics on Colbert (http://thecolbertreport.cc.com/videos/5otlsk/mike-d-s-hip-hop-semantics) and apprently has been in a pilot for a show called Rock the House (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2456598/?ref_=nm_flmg_slf_4).

This was one of my favorites. I thought this was a well polished performance, only possible after years of practice. Not to mention the straight up cheesy mics in the couch. If memory serves me well, it also seems Ad Rock had been shedding some pounds at the time.
Might not be #1 on my list but its near the top.

Well, it was a lovely last live performance on television I must say. Their first live performance on television (at least I think it was their first) was also good (but much different):

25 years separates these two performances -- it amazes me for some reason.

This is performance-wise one of their tightest renditions of this song. And I think a lot of that has to do with vibing off of the Roots groove. I'm glad they didn't do a straight interpretation of the tried and true version.

I fux with it hard.
I can't remember the Beasties MC'ing while backed by a different band, especially of The Roots caliber.
Good stuff.

Arsenio Hall with Cypress Hill
I think it's my favorite tv appearance of theirs. Pretty much sums up everything I like about them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kX_49MTrJo
The energy is just through the roof. Plus Hurricane and Cypress join in. Just an exceptional performance all around.
I like how they used the original beat for the Beastie rhymes and then switched to the remix beat at the end when Cypress came out. I never felt like the remix beat worked well with the Beastie rhymes, but for Cypress it's dope and works great as an outro.
Got to give Arsenio a little props. He did have some good live music sometimes.

I think it's sensational! It's not say wild enthusiasm a la Chapelle on the boat, but it's so focused. Yauchs penultimate verse is just defining - definitely one of the best MC voices for my money. And although one could be tempted to look at it through the glasses of poignancy - and perhaps fairly so - I don't think it's really necessary. I know the Roots like a groove but damn, you can see the mutual appreciation a mile off. Interesting how we all have different takes on something which to me is so undeniably cool though...

The Aresenio show is so great from an energy vibe. But my money will always be on the Roots version. The Bboys are like MC machines. They are so fucking locked into the groove. Both with the Roots and with each other. And it's just nice to hear it in a way we hadn't heard before.

Yeah to me it's a cool performance but nothing mind blowing or anything. It's cool that the Roots worked up the groove, but they basically just sit on the same groove the whole time, whereas the original has more going on throughout. Not that I expect them to learn every little part of the song on short notice, but just saying...
Of course nowadays I would much rather see this than just seeing a dj playing the record or whatever....but if they had all the parts down it would have been that much fresher.

Yeah I don't know but as far as I know it's the only time.
I always thought that would be dope though, if they could have let the dj thing go and hired a drummer, bassist, and guitarist to join Money Mark and crew to do an all-the-way live rap set. You just have to get the band to work up all the parts perfectly. To me these are the best rap shows...

Agreed. It's a shame people are not feeling the Roots backing the Beasties.
I've been to almost every Roots Picnic shows and they've backed Nas, Public Enemy, Naughty By Nature, De La Soul and they kill it every time. Maybe because it's on stage and loud? The sonics and energy? I dunno.

The Roots ARE dope! I just think this rendition of SWYW is a little tame and they left out too much of the original composition so it becomes a little repetitive.

Ha. That's life dude. It's just more life getting into the song. It's the way to go. Assuming everyone on the stage is on point of course.
On youtube there are some great band performances with people like Jay-Z, Eminem, Cypress Hill.
Make a record however you want, but for a show a band's the best way.

Yeah and having a tuba play the bass part....I don't want to say it's gimmicky....but kinda.....electric bass or a plugged-in upright would be better......or even just playing a bass sound on a keyboard, to be honest.

I think I just found the song incredibly played out, and it had gone from a favourite as a kid to just being there. They dropped SWW a lot on TV appearances and the like (especially post TT5B for some reason). That and to me it was a kinda flat sounding performance at the time (obviously poignancy poignancy and so forth). I wish I liked it more, especially now.

I never noticed that and certainly never felt a classic like SWW was ever played out. I did however get that feeling regarding Sabotage at times......

Not denying it's a classic. But it was played out, to me.
I can fully see the case for Sabotage, or really any 'big' song particularly if your frame of reference is limited by confirmation bias (i.e. I only see SWW as played out becuase I'm directly attentive to the instances they perform it on a TV appearance as it confirms my already held notion that it's 'played out').
I liked Sabotage heaps on the album, and it always made sense as a closer but I certainly never leapt around or went nuts to it. In some respects they could have flipped the script and used it as an opener, closing instead with perhaps Lee Majors or somesuch.
Alas, none of this is to ever be.
Were you just sick of Sabotage?

I guess I was sick of it. I remember a classmate of mine in High School (in the mid 90's) said he went to see them in concert and they both opened the show and closed it with Sabotage, which seemed quite lame. I was also irrationally afraid that somehow they would try to become an alternative band due to the success of Sabotage. There seemed to be real effort at that time from Matt Pinfield types on the rock stations to really pretend that this is what the Beastie Boys truly were. But then I remember when I first heard Intergalactic and all those fears were washed away. So silly of me to think the Beastie Boys selling out like that was even remotely possible....

Like most board members I've been to over 20something Beastie shows and Sabotage and Body Movin' were my least fav live tunes and they played them out 99.9% of the time.
That being said... Wait. What were we talking about?

Yeah, I agree. The kid swore that's what happened, but I also know this kid took a lot of mushrooms. Nevertheless, Sabotage was indeed the song in the catalog that the BBoys managed to "play out". Remember the SNL performance of it years and years after Ill Communication when they dressed up again like the cops? That was a bit unnecessary...

I'm saying this in a bullshitting, having fun manner (make no mistake this isn't a diss) but are you saying that it's been conclusively proven on balance all other things remaining equal that sabotage is beyond doubt the one song in the catalogue which has been played out to the exclusion of all others? No room for discussion?

Well for me it was So Whatcha Want. I actually think played out doesnt denote 'bad' it was just at various points when there was a band, my personal fear was them becoming a nostalgia act. Although the Fallon perfoancr kinda made sense since it was the CYH reissue they were promoting.
Have to own the fact that I aged the song out myself by thrashing it over the years, too.
Root Down has turned up in many iterations but that one TV performance in 06 with all the beat switch ups was a joy. Conan I think?

Yeah, I definitely agree. Sabotage was and is a great song no doubt, they just ran it into the ground.
I don't remember that Root Down performance, but I'd like to see it. It's surely buried in a Porky's compilation somewhere.
I do remember seeing the original retro-Knicks Root Down video on Rap City back in the day and then never seeing it again (I know that has little to do with what you're talking about, but you made me think of that)

Sabotage is one of those songs of theirs that never appealed to me. From the first time I heard it, I just didn't like it. So the notion of it "playing out" for me is impossible. But for other people that liked the song, I could see how that could be the case, I guess. So Whatcha Want is a song I always loved. I've listened to it a lot and I still love it. I guess this is all a pretty subjective thing though. Everyone doesn't like the same thing.

Since this thread at this point has a lot of talk about Sabotage, my thoughts on it:
The first few times I heard it I really dug it, but by the time I copped the record for myself, it was one of my least favorite tracks on it, even before it had been released as a single and run into the ground by radio and MTV.
That being said, it still has some of my favorite lyrics on it from that album. One line for example:
"While you sit back and wonder why, I got this fuckin thorn in my side...".
I still LOVE it. I just think it's lyrically really dope...just musically not my favorite, and obviously way overplayed.

And regarding the Fallon performance, the Beasties + The Roots = perfection. The performance just wasn't as good as it could have been.
