Today's Supreme Court ruling (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE60K3SK20100121) is really going to let the corporate elephants run rough-shod over the people's voice in American politics. Can you imagine....NO campaign $$ limits for corporations OR unions?!?!? I am simply flabbergasted. The present big money, corporate and special interest kidnapping of Washington was just given a safehouse, some extra guns and ammo AND the keys to the Presidential washroom. If you didn't think that the Federal Government has already been sold out to the highest bidder, hold on to your jock-strap. Any control you think we the people might have had on our government has just been handed over to the corporate machine on a silver platter. I am speechless. If you think Steinbrenner has been "buying" World Series trophies, you ain't seen nothing yet.

thanks for posting this, it nearly floored me. it's disgusting, a huge victory for corporate america, unlimited spending to elect the candidates of their choice, who will do their bidding and bow to the agendas of the big banks, insurance, drug and energy companies, big oil, wall street et al.

if legislation isn't brought forward to counter this, america's electoral system will be so delegitimized.

In fairness companies can not contribute money straight to a candidate but they can spend unlimited $$ on "issue" advertising ;);). Still pretty scary. If there is an upside it may be that some big dollar company(ies) decide to get on board with a third party candidate or two and help open up the system. Third parties have always struggled due to the campaign contribution limits.

First Amendment - Win
Truthfullness - Fail

Some thought the swiftboat ads were bad, get ready.

Trav, its wishful thinking that a third party will get that kind of support here. Better to throw your money at a party thats so deeply rooted, you don't even know where the roots go.

Unions have person hood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_personhood_debate), just as the corporations have since 1886.

In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, unless the context indicates otherwise-- the words "person" and "whoever" include corporations, companies, associations, firms, partnerships, societies, and joint stock companies, as well as individuals;

The way to fight for our right to party is to take our individual rights away from self serving entities who have no other goal than profit. The goal to profit has lead to an exodus of American ingenuity and jobs to our enemies.... who have an even larger disdain for individual rights.

A least IMO. The debate goes on and on and on...........

maybe there will be a new party. perhaps the "bank party" or the "fuck you got mine" party

at least it would be honest

A Big Check, and Gingrich Gets a Big Lift (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/10/us/politics/sheldon-adelson-a-billionaire-gives-gingrich-a-big-lift.html?hp) NYTimes 1/10/12

For weeks this winter, as Newt Gingrich’s presidential hopes faltered under the weight of millions of dollars in attack ads paid for by backers of Mitt Romney, a small group of Gingrich supporters quietly lobbied for help from one of the richest men in America: Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire casino owner and Mr. Gingrich’s longtime friend and patron.

Mr. Romney’s supporters were also calling, imploring Mr. Adelson to stay out of the race.

By the time Mr. Gingrich limped into New Hampshire, some of his top backers had given up on Mr. Adelson and begun prospecting elsewhere, including among erstwhile supporters of Gov. Rick Perry of Texas, to finance a counterattack.

But on Friday, the cavalry arrived: a $5 million check from Mr. Adelson to Winning Our Future, a “super PAC” that supports Mr. Gingrich. By Monday morning, the group had reserved more than $3.4 million in advertising time in South Carolina, a huge sum in a state where the airwaves come cheap and the primary is 11 days away. The group is planning to air portions of a movie critical of Mr. Romney’s time at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he helped found.

The last-minute injection underscores how the 2010 landmark Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance has made it possible for a wealthy individual to influence an election. Mr. Adelson’s contribution to the super PAC is 1,000 times the $5,000 he could legally give directly to Mr. Gingrich’s campaign this year.

the comments are spot on;

Thanks to the Supreme Court, America is now a country of the rich, for the rich, & by the rich.

or

Thank you Justices Roberts, Alito, Scalia, Thomas & Kennedy. You brought unimaginable damage to our country.

Some thought the swiftboat ads were bad, get ready.I would like to think the idiocy all of these Republican candidates are displaying is deterring enough from them to win the presidency, regardless of what ads the future runner-up can come up with which concludes those adverts as just annoyances and not actual ammunition to increase the chances of that candidate gaining more supporters in winning the White House.

Then again, reading this (http://www.sott.net/articles/show/240069-Ignorance-Is-Bliss), and that most Americans are not aware of SOPA and NDAA, I'm not too hopeful about the future.

I really am shocked at just how little media coverage this is getting in North America. Every time I mention it to someone they look at me like I'm crazy or some kinda conspiracy theorist. Nobody really understands that this is real and happening NOW. Passing this whole thing on New Years Eve is just the icing on the cake. Fucking really scary stuff.

The bad news is the USA is legally a country run by corporations and citizens.

And that is what gives!

Gingrich's attack ads and mini movie are the best things he's ever done for this country. Romney scares me, he is hollow, when I see him on tv I half expect his face to fall off to reveal he's a robot.

Let them attack each other until they cannibalize themselves.
