I especially liked "I hate cynicism. [...] It's my least favourite quality. It doesn't lead anywhere"
then him,Will Ferrell and the band played Freebird, as you do

theyll all be back soon enough. whenever the time period in his clause is hell be back on another network no doubt.
He said last night that it's 7 months until he can host another show. Kudos to Conan for taking the high road and thanking NBC for his time there. Very classy, as always. The Freebird finale was awesome w/ Will Ferrell, Will's wife, Ben Harper, Billy Gibbons, Conan, and Beck along w/ members from the band rockin the shit. Watching Conan jamming with everyone still made me mad. I'm thinking "this dude's so fucking cool and you're cutting him loose to bring back that big-chinned asswipe?"
Oh well.

couldn't watch the farewell speech, my work computer's crap. I did read the transcript of the speech though...and geez, that guy is so awesome. I teared up a little, didn't really expect that.
I kinda hope that the Tonight Show with Jay Leno Redux has a really hard time booking guests when he goes back. and...how are they going to handle his return? hyping it up after Conan's mega-popularity and all the anger toward Leno, just seems crazy.
the whole thing is crazy!
Anyway, Conan'll be fine. He's rich, funny, and popular.

Everything's run by suits. All guests are contractually obligated to make appearances. So, whether they want to or not, theyre gonna go on Leno and market their product.

I wonder how high the ratings were for this....it was a good show, could've used more shtick but oh well
Yeah fuck Leno, he has sucked from day 1.
I was sad to see Carson go and now this.

Supposedly Leno won't start up until after the Olympics - it appears to me he's too cowardly to start up so soon after O'Brien's departure for fear of ratings backlash
possibly it'll backfire still and people will forget about him

Actually they won't all be back. NBC owns the rights to all of Conan's characters and skits now. It was part of the final agreement. He is forbidden to ever bring back the masturbating bear.

just watched this , didnt know a lot of whats been going on and am going to search in a minute but that was a really dignified way to go out.
Question: why did he infer he made the choice when everyone keeps saying nbc replaced him with leno? I'll probably find that out but if someone could point me in the right direction of a good article on it please?
The bit he said about the fans was a really positivie and touching moment.
EDIT - just found the thread on here:o i'll have a butchers thru that(y)

i think his choice was to either quit the network entirely, or be pushed back to a later time slot (with a shorter show).

righto cheers
obviously i dont have too much knowledge about all this but it seems a backwards move by nbc and its already going to be difficult for leno to pull it off now

I remember growing up the monorail episode was EASILY my fave simpsons episode, then years later when my sister finally got cable, late night with conan became all of our favourite show.
It was only years later that I found out conan actually WROTE the monorail episode, and it was like 'how can this guy get any fucking cooler!??'

Whats with all the Jay Leno bashing I keep hearing about in this case? All it seems is like its most of NBC's fault.

I don't get it either. NBC was the one who forced him out of a slot where he was very successful to put in someone who was hipper but who wasn't successful. I don't care for Leno's humor but the guy never asked to lose his show and the whole thing confuses me. I don't understand why Conan wasn't happy with his old show but I suppose he didn't think he would lose half of Jay's audience.

I think the general format is dying and on it's way out. Not late nite talk shows but the way they are presented;
intro; monologue; sit down jokey time; guest; short jokey; guest; band.
If those seven items could be dissected and a different criteria applied I believe conan or some other bright young talent could tip over the late night status quo and really shake things up ratings wise.
The format is played out.

conan was doing very well at 12:35 and he was very happy with his old show. the problem was that his contract ended in 2009, so nbc asked leno if he'd hand over the reigns to conan in 2009 and agreed.
the fact is that nbc simply didn't give leno at 10:00 pm nor conan at 11:35 pm enough time to find their groove. when leno took over from carson in '92, letterman was constantly kicking the shit out of leno in the ratings for years. it wasn't until '95 that leno finally beat letterman, the night hugh grant was on after he was arrested with that hooker. and then from there on leno had higher ratings.

I don't think that's true. I haven't seen the contract myself (of course) but it's been widely reported that five years ago Conan's lawyers negotiated a deal that Conan would take over the Tonight Show in 2009. Conan threatened to leave his NBC show if he didn't get the Tonight Show promise. Five years ago, I guess NBC was more worried about Conan going to Fox then they were about losing Leno. I don't understand why.
Some say that NBC didn't lose as much as you think. They kept Conan at NBC until 2009 instead of him competing with them via Fox or someone else several years ago. And it won't cost them the reported $35 million unless he doesn't get another job in the next three years.

By the way, Letterman's CBS show was really good at first. I quit watching around 1995, but I didn't go to Leno, I went to other cable shows. I had watched Letterman's show on NBC regularly since the beginning so maybe I was just tired of nighttime talk shows.
I'd argue that Letterman peaked in early 1994 when he sent his mom to cover the winter olympics.

it's true, however conan was expecting to take over the tonight show from leno, so nbc closed the deal in 2004.
anyways leno hosted the show for seventeen years and he's insanely rich. he should've just stepped aside, retired, and let conan have the show.

I guess Conan's farewell speech was all part of a devious scheme (http://www.teamcoco.com/).
"In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theater, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said in a statement. "My plan is working perfectly."
I'm setting the DVR up for Mondays big return, because he's funny.

I give the show a thumbs up so far (y). Conan is in pretty good comedic shape and it appears that his touring and stand up act has actually enhance his performance on TV.
It's just nice to see an extremely funny guy on the late night TV again. The other fellows, (Leno-Letterman-Kimmel-Fallon-Ferguson) may have Network TV stature but other than Ferguson's robot, Conan has the Andy Richter sidekick which is really working. Andy has just the right attitude to become a sidekick legend, he peppers the banter like an old pro, but then again I guess he is an old pro now.
So anyway I just caught up with the first 3 episodes and so far, better than the rest of the late night talkers.
Just a side note, Conan don't sing or play guitar with the musical guests. Stick to the hosting job.

I've been wanting to ask whether anyone is watching the show these days (via TV---you tube doesn't count). I see the ads when I DVR Law and Order reruns and always wonder whether he's doing okay. I'd like him to come out of this okay.
My friends are not in Conan's demographic so I never hear anyone mention having seen his show the way people always mention what was just on the Daily Show.

the show is good. some of the comedy segments arent hella funny constantly every day like back in Late Night but still a good show.
conan has a lock on the 18-34 demographic.
