View Full Version : I got an XBox 360 the other day

It's the shit. First time I've bought a console since the GameCube in 2003. As a result I've been spending far too much time smoking weed in front of my 32 inch HDTV.
Any game recommendations? I've got GTA4, Pure and Lego Batman (it came with the last two) and I've borrowed Fifa 10 and Halo 3 off mates. No need to get MW2 as I got it on my laptop (for free I might add). I played Left 4 Dead for the first time today and that was sick so thinking of getting that too. What about Assassin's Creed? Worth getting the first one or just waiting a little til the 2nd one's gotten cheaper?
Tell me your Xbox Live gamer tags and if you're not too weird I'll add you.
get a ps3 and we will talk

Fable 2, Fallout 3, Batman- Arkham Asylum. Of course there's tons more but I'm new to 360 myself.

Burnout Revenge. it's a sick racing game, and you could get it off of the x-box live marketplace for cheap.
and get the Left 4 Dead sequel. it's like the first one, but more.

assassin's creed 1 is really polarizing. people seem to either love it or hate it. i love it, though i admit that it's very very flawed. it seems like a lot more people seem to hate it
basically, the core gameplay is fun, but there's maybe an hour of core gameplay, which is repeated over and over and over until the game ends. the way the game works is, you're given a target, and you go to that target's general location. you do an "investigation" which consists of climbing up on various viewpoints until you discover the side missions available in that location. there are 4 types of side missions, and there's really no variety within each type, it's just doing the same thing over and over. once you do the requisite number of side missions, you go after the target and try to kill him. the assassinations are quite fun, but everything leading up to them is admittedly pretty repetitive. i don't mind repetitive things though, so i quite like the game
assassin's creed 2 is about a billion times better. it took everything that was fun about the first game and removed all the repetitive bullshit. instead, it's a little more like GTA4, where you progress the game by taking missions, and each mission is unique and fun. also your character is a charismatic pimp, whereas in the first one you were kind of a douche.
if you can find the first one for cheap it's probably worth it but i really recommend playing the second one, it's so impossibly better. rent it or something if you can.
batman arkham asylum is great too, get that
Definitely check out Bioshock and Mirror's Edge.
Get Bayonetta, it'll go well with the green.

I love Left 4 Dead 2 a LOT.
Gears of War, 1 or 2 is great.
Dead Space is great.
Bioshock is great. And Bioshock 2 is out soon.
Colin Mcrae Dirt 2
Left for dead 1+2
(The only games I've been playing recently)
Skate 2
You can probably pick up wet and mirrors edge pretty cheap, they're quite fun too
Add my if you want. Hippomothamus
On an semi-realted not, if you have a lot of movies/tv shows on your computer don't forget you can play them over your network/usb hard drive to a nice big hdtv. Something I've had to set up for numerous friends who didn't know you could do it.

Easily my favourite recent game.
Oh and I'd get Left 4 Dead 2 for PC, but that's just my refusal/inability to adapt to playing first person shooters on consoles.

Maybe a hint of what kind of games you generally like?
RPG
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Borderlands (Shooter/RPG)
XBOX Live Arcade (XBLA)
N+
Shooters
The Orange Box
Earth Defense Force 2017 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntDyECvmnIo) (Buy it used, insanely dumb/campy, but fun as hell)
Far Cry 2
Gears of War 1&2
Call of Duty series
FUN
If you haven't already played it, pick up a used copy of Psychonauts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md_8uDtbffQ) for the original XBOX (It will play in the 360)

^ Can you play video-games if the Beastie Boys didn't make them?
if you can find prototype for cheap i'd recommend that as well. it's not a particularly amazing game but it's good old visceral fun, i'd say it's about $30 worth of fun

That's not a reason to buy a computer game, you tool. They could bring out a Sex & The City game with fuckin' Bohemian Rhapsody in it, I'm still not buying that shit.

Definitely check out Bioshock and Mirror's Edge.
You are absolutely right. Two of the best games on the system. Some of my other picks would be Batman Arkham Asylum, DJ Hero, Ghostbusters, Left 4 Dead 2, Halo 3 (if you like multiplayer, could care less about campaign), and Street Fighter IV.

saints row 2. it's a more fun, less realistic version of GTA. plus you should be able to buy it for $20 new.

Saints Row 2 is a coaster.
i wanted to like saints row 2 more than i did but i dunno, i just couldn't get into it. i like what it tried to do, and i appreciate its whimsicalness (especially the character creator; i like being able to play as a psychopathic tranny with a cockney accent, or at least having the choice to do so) but for some reason the gameplay just didn't do it for me.

Got a few demos, borrowed Mass Effect off my mate. I'm feeling to buy:
Left 4 Dead 1 + 2
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Burnout Paradise
Fifa 10
Mass Effect is cool but I only played it for like an hour which isn't really enough time to get into it. Will give it another playthrough if/when I feel up to it. Played the Wet demo, pretty unoriginal and over-stylized but surprisingly fun. Wouldn't bother buying the game though.
Also I ordered the Orange Box (only £12) because I used to be a big HL/TF/CS fan back in the PC days. I played Half-Life 2 on the PC but never finished it so will be cool to revisit the story and shit.
i would recommend getting either left for dead 1 or 2, but not both. i don't think the second one is quite different enough to justify owning both.
left 4 dead 2 is the better game, but the first one is cheaper and still a lot of fun. if you're strapped for cash, it works, but overall i'd recommend the second one

When it comes to game/film/TV series and shit, I get pretty anal (LOL!). I can't buy or play the 2nd/3rd game in a series without playing through from the 1st.
if you're worried about missing out on the plot or something, it isn't an issue, left 4 dead doesn't really have one (or if it does, it's completely unimportant). in both games, the "plot" is that you're a group of four people trapped in some kind of zombie apocalypse scenario, and you need to escape with your life. even within each game, each scenario is independent from all the others, and there's no crossover between the two games either (although apparently there's a chapter coming out for L4D2 that has the two groups meeting in some way)
Lex Diamonds
01-27-2010, 03:58 PM
I know this, it's not necessarily about plot I just like to have as deep an understanding as possible of the shit I'm playing/watching/listening to. For example if I'm checking out a musical artist I try and start with their 1st album and move forward. It's just the way I do shit; if you know where something's come from you have a better idea of where it's going. It's probably part of the reason I'm so damn intelligent.

I do the same thing with music and, to a lesser degree, movies (directors and actors) and books.
For whatever reason it fuels my understanding of and level of engagement with the artist to see their creative progression. I don't know why but I like it.
It is inefficient and expensive and is the reason I own four Berlin albums when a greatest hits would have sufficed.
Coming from someone who just bought both of them (for the reasons you listed wanted both) you'd be as well just buying the second. I got the first and second off of play.com for about £42

I would really, really, really love to see another Oddworld come out for next gen.
Not another FPS like Stranger's Wrath either.

You'll have an equally enjoyable experience either way but if you have the cash to do so, buy the second one. It's the better game because of some gameplay tweaks and the melee weapons but most importantly it's probably what most people are playing online at the moment. The game is far, far less enjoyable if you play it single player.

I bought L4D1 the other day and I couldn't get into it. I'm not playing it online and I don't like helping out a group of brainless AI.
I couldn't play it for more than 20 minutes and then I put it down. Is it just an online game?
Kid Presentable
01-28-2010, 06:45 PM
Local co-op is really fun, but yes it's probably a bit more of an online game.
yeah, you really should be playing it with other people. playing it alone can be kind of fun in brief spurts, because you still get to slaughter hordes of zombies but it's really meant to be played with other people.
playing it with random people can be kind of a crap shoot though. my favorite games are ones where you have one or two people who have absolutely no idea what they're doing, because i think it raises the level of tension when you actually have to look after your teammates and people are in danger of dying. at this point, L4D 1 has been out so long that everyone who plays it is just too damn good, i keep joining these killer commando squads who seem to know exactly what to do and where to go at any given moment and they keep yelling at me for sucking (which is annoying because a lot of them sound like they're about 12). it's all "move to the small office, NO THE SMALL OFFICE NOT THE LARGE OFFICE WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING GET OUT OF THERE", i just prefer to bumble around and play. all the tactics kind of drag it down, especially when i can't figure out what they're talking about

i don't mind it in games like call of duty where you can just fuck off and do your own thing, but in a game like left 4 dead where you actually have to cooperate with a small group of people for an entire game it can be a little annoying

I actually only play Left 4 Dead 2 as a offline co-op because, as others mentioned, it's mostly 12 year olds online.
I've talked amongst friends about starting a gaming group who aren't hardcore about it (so we aren't crazy serious/tactical) so we can just have fun.
Too bad you guys are in a different time zone. Then again I always tend to play things around 7/8pm PST.
I've only really had one problem on left for dead and it was when I joined a game in which 2 of the users would just stand and shoot their team mates.
....a 12 year old had to actually tell me to pick up a health pack on my first time playing it

Have ordered Halo 3 cuz my friend wants his back (£7), and I got The Orange Box for £10. Not bad at all. Possibly the best value for money I've ever seen games-wise, everything on it is sick. Especially Portal. (y)
I forgot how good Half-Life 2 was. I had it on PC when it first came out but never completed it or went back to it after the first week or so of of play. Today I haven't been able to stop playing... Ravensholme after a load of spliffs & watching Paranormal Activity for the first time was... interesting. I shat a brick.
At this rate I won't finish anything. Still only about half through GTA4.
At this rate I won't finish anything. Still only about half through GTA4.
Get the new episodes too. Well "The Ballad of Gay Tony". I'd skip the other one. I got them both and couldn't put down The Ballad and never complete the first one.
yeah, ballad of gay tony was really fun. lost and damned was fun too but not nearly as good as gay tony. the whole club management thing was kind of fun, and it was also fun to chug a bottle of champagne and fall down the stairs
i would also say that the ballad of gay tony is the most blowjob-centric game i've ever played (not gay ones, don't worry)
