10 (http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/82/nominees.html) Best Picture nominees?

I'd really like to see Up win, even though I've only seen about half of these. The Hurt Locker was good too. And despite being entertained by them for the most part, I don't know what Inglorious Basterds or Avatar are doing on this list. Shoutouts to District 9 and A Serious Man.

I saw Moon for the first time the other day.

It's hard to believe it's not been nominated for anything.

Just like every awards show every year for a long time now, there are always nominees that make sense, and ones that do not.

I hope that the ones that deserve it most win, but I don't count on the committees to make well educated decisions based on things that have won in the past. So whatever.

The most exciting thing about the fucking oscars is seeing the starstruck british interviewer (hello FEARNE COTTON) dribbling like a retard trying to get a few words from actors, actresses or directors and failing miserably

i saw more movies in the theater this past year than i have since i was a delinquent high schooler and i still only saw two films that got a nod for anything here.

i guess i should get renting?

having ten contenders for best picture is a throwback to the 1940s, but yeah i think it's dumb too. seriously, up in the air was nominated for best picture, but the road wasn't?! (n)

Yeah I didn't really like it. By the end I was just horrified.

Up was my favorite movie of 2009.

I lost faith in the Academy after Titanic and that piece of shit Shakespeare in Love walked with a bunch of wins in consecutive years.

I regained it a bit when No Country For Old Men received its deserved props.

I don't have a particular affinity for any of the nominees besides A Serious Man and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. But then, I haven't seen everything nominated.

*shrugs*

P.S. Moon was good, but not that good.

Up I would be fine with winning. It would actually be sort of refreshing. A Serious Man was hands down my favorite and Im rooting for that. District 9 I enjoyed, but it doesnt deserve best picture. If Avatar or Inglorious Basterds win it, Im boycotting movies for a week.

nah cuz it was an obnoxiously stylized movie with dumb obvious predictable plot

^I enjoyed most of it up until the final act. Definitely has no business getting a nom, though.

I think that overall Up was just thrown in there to garner more viewer interest. It was a mainstream success and will probably have a lot of people rooting for it. But it's already going to take the Best Animated win, so it's kinda unlikely it would get both that and Best Picture.

And now that Avatar is officially the highest grossing film of all time, it's chances of actually winning have probably become more of a serious possibility. It's like that reverse Cinderella story thing the Academy is sometimes fond of bringing us, where the big studio giants take home all the significant awards and some random British art house/Elizabethan era period film gets the Best Costume statue.

just wanted to say that avatar sucked

well not sucked. but the story and dialogue was so fucking predictable cliched and plain old dumb.

and the 3d effect bugged the shit out of me because i would instinctually try to focus on shit in the background or soemthing in the foreground because it would grab my attention like you'd be able to in real life. since the only thing in focus was what the camera had in focus while filming my attempts to focus on something else in the scene was fruitless. it just bugged the fuck out of me.

Dances with Wolves won seven Oscars, now that it's in space and in 3D, it'll probably win more.

Inglorious Basterds is made for fanboys by a fanboy. shouldn't be anywhere near the Oscars.

ever since Russell Crowe won for 'Gladiator' the Oscars have been kind of meaningless for me.

Yeah, "Inglourious Basterds" didn't do anything for me. So much of it was "wink wink look-how-clever-i-am" stuff or just retreading (and doing to death) ideas from "Kill Bill" (which I loved)

And, yes, although the Oscars is kind of generally meaningless, i'm stoked "In The Loop" got a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay. Armando Iannucci winning an Oscar would be epic.

I think "The Messenger" should have gotten nominated more.

I also think Paul Schneider should have gotten a supporting actor nomination for Bright Star. He needs to start making more movies cause I really enjoy his acting.

Shakespeare in Love is one of my favorite movies.

Anyway, yeah, I don't get the 10 nominees thing. And why is The Blind Side up for best picture? I haven't seen it, maybe it's good. But I'm kinda getting a crash-vibe from it.

Lets not forget that it takes more than a good story to win the best picture of the year or that you sold the most albums to be the best album of the year.

I'd like Up to win. I think animation needs to be taken more seriously beyond those who are fans of anime. Pixar movies are not just for kids and they often do an amazing job making sure that a story appeals to everyone in the family. Up had so many wonderful subtle touches, it was fantastic. the 3D was use to make the movie look bigger instead of throwing things at your face, etc. When I went to see it, there were people laughing to the point of coughing and crying to the point of sniffling.

I didn't cry though. Hell no.

I guess I'm the only one who didn't really care for Up. Maybe if I saw it again or something. the animation was astounding, but the rest...meh.

I liked Inglourious Basterds a lot, but mostly for the acting. I don't think it should be best picture or anything.

Haven't seen Avatar, but from what most people are saying, I'm pretty sure it's going to piss me off, yet please me visually.

The Blind Side seems like a Lifetime movie.

District 9 was pretty awesome, but again...not sure about best picture.

The Hurt Locker was really good, but it was a pretty simple portrait piece. I don't think it went as deep as it thinks it did.

I think A Serious Man should win. but it probably won't. :/

There is a -0.005% chance that "Precious...." will win for Best Picture.

And I'm pretty sure the execs at Pixar have already cleared space on their shelf for their Best Animated Feature win for Up.

I agree that Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin did well, I enjoyed the Clooney stare downs and subtle digs.

The accolades part before the Best Actor and Actress awards was barfable, with exception to Oprah.

The tribute to dead Hollywood folks (and michael jackson) was void of emotion being sucked dry by James Taylor's rendition of Yesterday.

The tribute to John Hughes was awkward, though his family seemed very sweet.

I was completely pissed off that Jack Nicholson was not there, the place seemed to lack class.

I was happy for Lauren Bacall and Roger Corman getting the lifetime achievement Oscar, though the audience seemed clueless about standing up and applauding for them ( I believe because jack Nicholson wasn't up front showing these folks how to be classy)

I'm just about sure anyone who's posted on this thread could produce and direct a much more entertaining presentation of the Academy Awards.

The real problem is 2010 was dominated by good to great movies not excellent movies.

Oh yeah since I'm going on about all of this I too really liked a Serious Man, it is the type of movie that can be made after winning an Oscar, it was like a reward to intelligent people who enjoy the subtleties of life while dealing with internal strife... the only movie I watch once in the theater and two times in a row on DVD.

More than I can say about all of the others, of which I've seen all of except Up in the Air.

hpdrifter

Poor Molly Ringwald looked like a deer caught in headlights.

Anthony Michael Hall doesn't even look like himself.

I didn't really understand the point of parading the Best Actress and Actor nominees at the beginning of the show. I mean if you're going to do that, why not just have NPH say these are really the awards that everyone cares about. You sound, documentary and short filmmaking people don't even really belong here. Your awards are when people get up to go to the bathroom.
