View Full Version : Why Eminem is still one of the greatest rappers of all time.

Watch his flow in this video. (http://content.onsmash.com/archives/26191)

IMO, three of the best in the game today.
MOS, Thought, and Em.

And Em outshines 'em all.

I don't think any rapper has had more respect for the craft and for hip hop than this kid.
By far the best at battling, and he's probably the smartest too.

You can see he's trying to come as hard as he can every time he spits. The guy's intensity is just soo evident. You gotta respect that.

The other thing Em does really well is creative feel for the beats.
He starts/stops and creative times, he picks interesting downbeats/backbeats to track with the emphasis in his rhymes.
He's just interesting.

Not yet. I'm making one tomorrow, since I'm too lazy tonight.

I listen to that often. It's powerful.

Kinda old now, but yeah. I agree.

For some reason people keep saying Black Thought had the best verse. If Mos didn't already use that verse on a song it'd have had a bigger impact.

When he tries, Em is easily the most talented rapper alive. Maybe even ever.

RobMoney$
02-03-2010, 10:32 PM
I thought Em came harder and chose a more creative flow within the beat.

And believe me, it's not easy for me to say that considering how much Philly love Thought has.
He's constantly rhyming about Philly.

I hear he has Just Blaze, Alchemist and DJ Khalil doing some beats for Relapse 2. Personally, I think he should just drop the whole sequel thing and go ahead and deliver a serious monster this time around. I think the reception he's gotten from his verses on Forever, the BET cipher and that song with Lil Wayne have motivated him to go in another direction now. I think he's done with the accents also. So there's really no point in doing the Relapse 2 thing, especially since a few of those tracks just ended up on his Refill joint anyhow.

RobMoney$
02-05-2010, 09:22 PM
Yeah, I think him & Dre need to seperate at this point.
I understand that Dre gave him his shot and helped create him and all, but I think he's now stifling him.
Dre's beats are a little out of touch.
He went back and had Dre produce Relapse, and it was a disappointment.
Time to move on IMO.

It would be interesting to see what he could put out for his next album with a fresh look.

I think he's the weakest on that, but he's still pretty good.

its all the "killing koalas etc. etc." stuff that gets me. His flow is great and all, and I don't mind jibberish rhymes at all, but this "oh im a mad killer man" stuff doesn't do it for me. It's boring now.

Yeah, he's technically an amazing rapper, and I love his verse on "Forever" but I don't think he's made very good music in a while. Alot of his beats/hooks are pretty poor.

People can complain about the Ken Kaniff and serial murderer stuff, but I'll take that any day over the tired old "omg I'm a gangsta, pimps and hos nonsense."
Seriously, how are people not embarrassed to be in gangs these days?
I have a hard time thinking of something more dated and cliche.
Actually, I can think of one: rapping about it.

Let me be clear about something. For me, anyway, it's not just about content.
He writes about what he knows, perscription drug addiction, his trailer park upbringing, his struggles with his kids mother, ect.
Writing about your fucked-up life is way more refreshing than seeing him writing about the hos in the club, or some other hip hop cliche.
Wu-Tang's been making songs about hustling crack since day one, but they're considered hip hop gods and have never been criticized by anyone for it.

Em does more interesting things with cadence and pitch than any rapper on the planet.

For instance, listen to Raekwon on Black Mozart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PApPZHGwMk&feature=related).
It's just monotone rapping. It's boring to me.

Now take Em's verse in that Cypher video, or even on some of his new shit like Beautiful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgT1AidzRWM).
His rhyme schemes are intricate, and he does interesting things with the pitch in his voice to emphasize certain words.

I'm sure Rae's message is great and all, but, musically, melodically, it's just not that interesting to me.

Biggie was amazing with expressiveness and emphasis in his cadence and pitch. Look at something like Gimme the loot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEPgA4ZQf0U), or The Warning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lb0HImG_MU),...Great stuff.

$19.99 was a lot of $ back in '85, especially for some cardboard, a book and a record. There wasn't even a "But wait...." bonus tagged on at the end.

Needless to say, Alfonso probably didn't exactly get caked up off that idea, but I'm sure he doesn't regret any of it. Plus he was still getting that Pepsi money.

Now you are free to comment on the songs I posted. I was lying when I said I wasn't trying to get into a dance battle. At least with you, I'm pretty sure I could smoke you.

Doubt it. See cos, that kid in the video.....was actually me. Cross my heart.

True, but its not like its an impressive story. Itd be like bragging that your uncle played bass in the Marshall Tucker Band. Why bring it up otherwise?

That story is as "un-hip hop" as kaiser's hip hop credentials...

haha, right - I will bet my child that I am more hiphop than most of the eminem fans out there. Growing up with breakdancing, rollerskating, the electric boogaloo, NWA, Digital Underground, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Diggable Planets, PM Dawn, blah blah and then becoming a dj exploring all sorts of downtempo/underground hiphop like Peanut Butter Wolf, Wax Tailor, Vadim, Food, Shadow...I think you see where I'm going

yes I don't breakdance anymore, nor do I rollerskate, and my tables are collecting dust

Really,...PM Dawn, roller skating, and the fresh prince?
If I was going to try to prove how hip-hop I was, those are some of the last things I'd use, along with Alphonso Ribeiro being the mini Michael.

There is some truth to the story tho, a good friend of mine did win the Michael Jackson dance contest and did get to meet Alphonso as part of the prize, but nobody really considered it "hip hop" or anything.

Dude grew up to be a chipendales dancer and lives in Vegas now.

Ha. That's sorta like saying, "yeah, my cousin's a dentist, which kinda makes me one, I guess."

I wouldn't knock the Jazzy Jeff thing, personally. He's probably one of the overall best/most influential DJs in hip hop, and his post-Fresh Prince work has been pretty solid. But yeah, I can't say I followed their music past "He's The DJ....", which was still more just due to preadolescence etc.

PM Dawn still remains inexcusable.

I specified Fresh Prince.
You know where I'm from, no need to give me Jeff's credentials. (y)

i thought rob's and kaiser's posts were supposed to be jokes so i barely read them

well say what you want but the best fresh prince episode is when carlton becomes a gangsta, hell yeah

i dont care so much about fresh prince's music, thats how hip hop i am

This turned out to be a quality thread.

You never know what you're going to get at the BBMB.

Mick was the only one who's spidey senses were on with that story.
Dancing is not RobMoney.
I mean I've been known to fist pump at a club, or lose my mind in a mosh pit at a concert from time to time, but anything beyond that you can forget about.

I was more into bombing the rooftops of Philadelphia along the Market-Frankford line when I was a kid when hip hop was just being born.
Carried a LTI cassette in my denim jacket everywhere I went.

I thought this was going to be about Eminem raping people but it turned out to be about Michael Jackson and Alphonso Ribeiro so I'm satisfied.
