View Full Version : THE OFFICIAL 2010 VANCOUVER WINTER OLYMPICS THREAD

HEIRESS

I'm not attending. I can't afford 3500 dollar hockey tickets, although there are tons of free concerts going on showcasing Canadian artists for the next 2 weeks which is pretty rad.
Anways, I believe I am now morally against the olympics because we've had front row seats to see how it's fucked the rest of the province over the last few years, but no one wants to hear about that in this thread.
Ya ya its all $ invested in the province's future, but I'm sorry its all been invested in Vancouver's future, not the rest of us poor fucks.
If mickill uses the newly improved 600 million dollar sea to sky highway to Whistler atleast once a year so he can go drink hot chocolate in the ski lodge, then I guess that will make me happy.

I'm also sick and tired of hearing about the fact that one of the ski-hills hosting events doesn't have any snow.
We are having the warmest weather in recent history. Shit, Im 4 hours north east and our average temp has been above zero for over a month, that is UNHEARD of this time of year, especially around here.
They are spending thousands upon THOUSANDS to truck and helicopter in snow to the slops from from other remote locations, it's absolute bullshit.

So don't tune into NBC hoping to see pictures of Vancouver looking like a Canadian winter wonderland, you will see rain and more rain. Apparently Vancouver is the "warmest" city to have ever hosted the winter games, the ski hills are all 1-2 hours North of the city itself though.

I have lots of friends who live in Vancouver and this is the best facebook status update I've seen regarding the Olympics broo-ha-ha thus far:

"__________ is standing in a big ass lineup waiting to pickup his Olympic tickets and got on Russian TV. He waved hello with the ancient and sacred Inuit greeting - The Shocker."

Anyways, I'm sure the result of these Olympics will be a mass influx of people to Vancouver and even more retarded rises in housing costs because everyone will want to move there after seeing what a beautiful place it is on TV.

$3500? that is crazy...

i knew someone who was totally amped about heading up for the games, and i don't know how she was affording to do it all. i mean, i guess the tickets they got weren't as high priced as that. but i'd think the whole trip would add up quickly...

i am fine with staying in my warm house watching everything at once on tv

I wonder if the cherry blossoms will bloom before the event is over...I know the tulip bulbs will be up...it's a bit of a farce...I skied Cypress for years and I've never seen it that barren at this time of year in my life...really the games belong in an alpine city...basically Vancity went back to federal trough almost exactly 25 years after Expo 86...they felt due, unions rang the bell and sea to sky got twinned...I think there will a lack of genuine winter/nordic spirit just because it's in a temperate rain forest, you know...sure it will expose B.C to alot of the world for it's incredible beauty a great commercial...and that's what these games are a commercial endeavor...I'll be paying a closer eye to speed skating this year because the venue is about kilometre away from my bro's house and my hometown...plus I'm waiting to see what Stephen Colbert get's up to...his pre-games try out bit's have been killer...:D

My dad's best friend works for the city of Richmond and played a huge part in building the arena.

Shit, they even sent him to hang out when the Torino Olympics happened just to see how an olympic speed skating venue is run.
He called us from there during events to see if we could see him in the crowd, haha!

So yeah, for his sake I hope the speed skating gets lots of coverage.

Here are my comments;

The firsts nations tribute , very cool ( well, we are going to rape their environment pretty soon so...), all the visual effetcs were very awesome, the flying dude could have crash at any moment, i would not have care a lot, then more visual awesome effects, Sarah was cool, then some violon, hey, we can riddle this away. The whales were awesomes. Then some french song sang by Garou, my comment is WTF. I mean quebec is very talented but Garou doe snot represent us. Next, the fucking ties guys, what a way to ruin the party.
Micheal jean words of bliss to open the ceremony; what way to say we are still the dominion of england. The finaly was very nice, Gretsky in the rain in th e winter olympics... Do i need to say more! I wanted to send him a umbrella,

but my final comment is very nice visuals effects, simplicity and alright!

they would show like 3 ski jumps and then go to a break again.

PLUS its a real shame that they are refusing to allow internet streaming of any of their footage outside of canada to force you to watch their shitty 3 hour prime time each night. not that i can really watch outside of that anyway, but i wouldn't mind streaming a bit while i stab myself in the neck with nothing to do at work all week long...

You wouldn't believe the crap I've been giving the Canadians today. They have all these commercials up here saying "Let's show them whose game they're playing" and I have quite a few friends who always shit-talk the Americans, so all I can say is WHO'S LAUGHING NOW? Me. Mwahaha.

did anybody else take notice to how shit the US and Canada are at ski jumping?

in the team event, they were finished 11th and 12th and it wasn't by a close margin. the point difference from them and 10th place was about the same as from 10th to 5th.

so who can explain to me the difference between the super g and the giant slalom?

one has a slightly more hip hop style name than the other!

super g has more distance between gates, not as twisty as giant slalom and more like downhill

I wanted to come in here and tell you how beautiful your city came across during the broadcast of the games over the past two weeks.
I was captivated by it really.
I kept trying to look for your $1 Vinyl thrift store everytime they showed footage of the town.

But then I read this post and now I hate your entire country.
Look at it this way, we're better at Hockey (Your country's sport) than you are at Baseball, Football, Basketball, (Our country's sports) or Soccer.

Enjoy your moment, it will be short lived. :D

But... the Canadians won. And you didn't. How does that make you better at hockey?

Too bad they had to celebrate Canada's best athlete's with Canada's worst music, but all in all a hell of a Games. It's good to see some national feeling centered on something besides not being American. Hopefully the legacy lasts.

I don't think I've ever seen such a low scoring game that was that exciting. Steadfast defensive struggle.

I've never seen so many Canadian flags in one place at one time in my life. The scene on Robson st. was like something out of a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film, but cheery. There was just this big sea of people in red for blocks and blocks in every direction. All in all, it was pretty peaceful. People wearing American flags over their backs were high-fiving people waving Canadian flags, no cars got turned over etc. It was nice.

Today, in comparison, the town almost looked abandoned.

Well, technically basketball is more of a Canadian sport. But since we only have one NBA team people automatically assume we suck at it. Which isn't necessarily false. But Steve Nash is probably better at basketball than at least 99.8% of the American population. So there's that.

Americans embarrass the hell out of me when we put on a spectacle. But at this time, I can't think of anything worse than that god awful closing ceremony. Yeah, Neil Young was good, but WTF were they thinking with the rest of it?

PS, NBC cut off the musical horrors before the end, so I missed some of the canadian "music."

NBC just sucks. I can't believe the cutaway.

They will show you the luger crashing and dying but will cut away for an hour of the closing ceremony because of a lame show and the local snooze. Give another network a chance.

You know what, that game probably meant more to your country's national pride than it would have meant to mine.
It's not like it was 1980 and our teenaged kids beat the Soviets' national team.

I'm know exactly how much winning a sports championship can raise the spirits and unite folks from all walks of life in a city.
It's quite an awesome experience, and it's why I consider sports teams so vital to the "community" of a city.

Congrats.

BTW, You may be able to claim Nash, but he can't pass the ball to himself.
Unfortunately you'd need to roster at least four more players.

Canada deserved the gold and Miller deserved the MVP

This was a great Olympics for me - it was heroic, tragic, and quite historic for Canada. I'm a little sad to see it go.

Concerning NBC's coverage - Not as extensive as CTV, but better reception and MSNBC/CNBC also provided coverage (especially a shitload for Curling)

I really enjoyed the CTV morning coverage and the extended coverage after NBC dropped out.

However - I did watch the closing ceremony "on ice" celebration. And it was goddamn magical.
