I'm guessing you've already heard of Miles, Thelonious & Coltrane.

You might have to be more specific, roosta. You probably don't want recommendations for big band if you're looking for "cool" early Miles kind of stuff or the more groove-oriented/commercially popular 70s-styles of jazz. I also doubt you want to jump right into Bitches Brew if you don't want to hear fusion. I can tell you that most readily available Blue Note albums that came out in the 50s and 60s are solid. I'm also a fan of a lot of the more slickly produced albums that came out on the Kudu or CTI labels in the 70s.
I can recommend a few favorites that cover a pretty varied spectrum. Most of it is pretty easy to get into:
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
Hank Mobley - The Turnaround
Freddie Hubbard - Open Sesame
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil
Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
Chick Corea - Return To Forever
And yeah, John Coltrane (Blue Train, A Love Supreme, Giant Steps), Miles Davis (Birth of Cool, Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way) and Thelonius Monk (With John Coltrane At Carnegie Hall, Monk's Dream, Brilliant Corners) are all pretty safe bets that I think anybody should be able to appreciate.

This is a good point!
I'm gonna check out some of the stuff you posted.
I once took a CD from my dad's collection called "Late Night Jazz" I quite liked that. It was New Yorky, late night kinda stuff (As the title suggested).
(Edit: I just checked out Miles Davis / Coltraine "So What", I liked that)

i have dabbled with a bit. "Round midnight" album by miles davis i liked and i had a collection of blue note(?) stuff that came out when people like gang starr and that us3 record were about that had loads of old stuff on that was quite good. I have no idea if the jazz i have heard is decent or cool or a pile of shit

"Time Out (http://www.amazon.com/Time-Out-Dave-Brubeck-Quartet/dp/B000002AGN)" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet is a highly enjoyable album start to finish.
Take Five (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwNrmYRiX_o&feature=related) is probably their most famous song, I love it.

All of the above is from the 70s when you start to see a lot of funk influence.
