Hmmm... After listening to it once through I feel a little shortchanged.
Lots of similar tracks on there. I can see why they chose the beach theme for the music - it's all very laid back, but I wanted something a bit more uptempo. I know the idea is that the band evolves and changes its sound record to record, but the debut album, although now 9 years old, sounds a lot more energetic and spunky than this one.
I like this new one - but I don't think it's going to ever be anything other than background music whilst I'm working, whereas I can still stick the first album (and to a lesser extent the second album) on and nod my head to the beat.
I think the first one has that sustainability because the Automator worked heavily on it and is far superior than Danger Mouse..at least from what I've heard of the two. This third one was supposedly Damon Albarn and one other guy...and it just ain't cutting it.
The only Plastic Beach I want is this one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lolQ5pgp6XQ&feature=player_embedded)

I listened to the whole thing as I sipped my morning coffee and answered e-mails. It was a good soundtrack. It was dug.

not bad, nothing as good on there as their best earlier stuff but a pretty good listen. different and intruiging ideas.
sweepstakes - very strange but brilliant. i need more mos def in my life.
whats the point of getting mark e smith to shout a bit of randomness for about 20 seconds. sounds more like he did a longer vocal and they binned it

"Unidentifiable Randomness" would be a more accurate description from the first. From Demon Days to now, it has been more specific.
Plastic Beach does get you into that Miami Vice mood though.

each album topped the previous album off up until now.
it's an okay album but it doesn't seem like a lot of time was spent on it overall and everything sounds too similar.
i don't know if i'm feeling the switch. just listen to demon days, then this, and you'll see the difference. demon days was real original, this sounds like a flock of seagulls and yes type beats with cheap 80's synths.
you also can't picture those cartoons playing this kind of music :P

Listened to it yesterday and was slightly underwhelmed. Probably not going to occupy any gym-related playlists like the first two and their associated remix albums, which is slightly disappointing but oh well. My co-worker gave me a RuPaul CD today so I'm throwing that in the mix.
Don't be jealous of my boogie, people.

Most of us seem to have the same opinion of this record, which is interesting.
It's even more interesting when you consider that all the music magazines/sites are busy kissing Damon Albarn's balls over it and proclaiming it as the best album of the year, despite the fact that A) we're only in March and B) it isn't.

^ its easy journalism, lazy. its a big album, there havent been many big albums this year and they know its gonna sell a lot so if they claim its brilliant the sales will vindicate that, if it doesnt they will either say its a cult success or deny they said it was good in the first place.
they probably panned the first two albums and that obviously backfired. I stopped taking notice of reviews a long time ago. I would occasionally read a review and if it was well written then i might buy it, but with everything available now, i trust my ears and word of mouth and thats it

yeah it's kinda boring.
the first album, i liked the majority of the songs on it.
the second album, i liked probably about half of the songs on it (especially kids with guns, o green world, feel good inc., and dare).
this one has maybe a few songs i like so far.

only know stylo so far but i guess that album is one of those that you need to listen to more often to appreciate it cause it's probably not as catchy as the other albums
each album topped the previous album off up until now.
Thats just crazy talk.
a. This is only their third album (i think) so there really isn't much to top.
2. The second one only has a handful of good songs.
III. Thats just crazy talk.

Now that's kind of crazy talk.
No its not. Its uncrazy talk. I actually just listened to it again after my post. And I still agree with myself. But I will admit, it isn't as bad as I thought, but still nothing too stellar for the most part. And compared to the first one...its a letdown.

i gotta say that each album is patchy but this album differs in that the good stuff isnt as poppy or instantly accessible as the good stuff on the other two. its moody and patchy this one

Yeah there hasn't been really obvious genius in any of the Gorillaz records, you just have to get used to listening to them as a whole. The first one is a little better than Demon Days, granted, but it's not some earth-shattering work of art that will never be bettered. I think this newie is as enjoyable, or rather I foresee it to be as such in time.

Playing non stop since I got it.
Gets better every listen. Stylo was severely hated 2 weeks ago, now I like it after giving it a few listens. Now I really like the album, better than Demon Days? Not yet.... Though that could be because it's very collaborative. More like Gorillaz's friends featuring damon.
also no DM? that's a shame. Still love it.

Stylo is what Luke Skywalker would be listening to if he'd flipped off Obi Wan and instead spent his days charging about in his landspeeder.

I agree with Rock. Gorillaz's good songs have been really good, and the mediocre ones - which are in the majority - are REALLY mediocre. Very few of them are ever all that flat-out bad; however, this album left me yawning. Not good.

Well I think it's a little more even then the first one.
It's sorta like the first two Gnarls Barkley albums
Gorillaz is to St. Elsewhere as Demon Days is to Odd Couple in a very SAT sort of way.
It's got fewer high highs and low lows but across the board comes out more even.
Whatever.

I really wanted to come into this thread guns blazing about how awesome this album is, but it's not. It's fun, but average. Dammit.:(
