like, memorable to the point where you can't even disassociate the song from the movie.
this list is not premeditated at all, and i'm far from a movie buff, so it might be lacking, but reminded me of any i forgot -
"q lazzarus - goodbye horses" from "silence of the lambs"
"roy orbison - the sandman" from "blue velvet"
"the kingsmen - louie louie" from "animal house"
"bob dylan - the man in me" from "the big lebowski"
"miserlou" from "pulp fiction"
"twist and shout" from "ferris bueller's day off"
"beethoven - 9th symphony" from "a clockwork orange"
"nancy sinatra - these boots are made for walking" from "full metal jacket"

Then there are those forgettable movies named after memorable songs like Jumpin' Jack Flash.

Footloose - any number of songs
Flashdance - What A Feeling and some others
Fame - Fame
Breakfast Club - Don't You Forget About Me
Pretty In Pink - If You Leave
Wow, I'm getting freaking old. People in high school now were born before all of these movies came out.
Footloose - any number of songs
Flashdance - What A Feeling and some others
Fame - Fame
I don't think they qualify since they weren't famous songs before the movie.

I guess Take My Breath Away and Top Gun don't count either then.
True, if going by my rules.

I think perhaps one of the very finest uses of perfectly used songs in two great movies would be,
The End (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzM4D2_uOP0&feature=related) - Apocalypse Now
Hurricane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YngpWylqQ3A) - The Hurricane
Both written years before the films.

Well, there's that Bohemian Rhapsody song from that one movie.
i never really liked "wayne's world," or watched it through its entirety, hence why i forgot about it.
and yeah, i'm talking about songs that were already famous or moderately famous before the movies came out, otherwise this could go on forever

I'll never think of Stuck in the Middle with You the same again after Reservior Dogs.
And I can't hear I Got You, Babe without picturing Bill Murray, blankets up to his chin, staring blankly at the ceiling.

“Ride of the Valkyries” and the Doors “This is the End” in Apocalypse Now…
"Rags to Riches" by Tony Bennett ,“Gimme Shelter” and “Monkey Man” by the Stones in Goodfellas…
“Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson and “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane in Platoon…
"The Man in Me" by Bob Dylan in "The Big Lebowski"...
All big lebowski songs remind me of the film - its my favourite film though.
Where is my mind by Pixies always reminds me of fight club.
edit: seconds after replying to this thread I put on Big Lebowski, its been a couple of months since I've seen it so its ok to watch again now - thanks (y)

This is a GREAT thread!

In the iconic use division (ie these songs now BELONG to these films):
You Can Leave Your Hat On - 9 & 1/2 weeks
Johnny B Goode - Back To The Future
Day- O - Beetlejuice
Old Time Rock and Roll - Risky Business
In Your Eyes - Say Anything
In the fantastic use of a great song in a great moment (but the song is just too good to be totally owned as above):
Slow Ride - Dazed and Confused
Golden Brown - Snatch
(actual I love the way Guy Ritchie uses music in his movies, so I could grabbed almost any song he's ever used but this one is intensely perfect, plus I fuckin love this song
Hip to be Square - American Psycho
These Days & Me & Julio(tie!) - Royal Tannenbaums
What a wonderful world - Good Morning Vietnam
Super Freak - little miss sunshine
Comfortably Numb - The Departed
House Of The Rising Sun - Casino
Mad World - Donnie Darko
Mirror In the Bathroom - Grosse Point Blank
I'm just gonna stop because I get the feeling I could do this for the next 2 weeks without complaint!
Again, brilliant fucking thread!
:D
I always associate Can't You Hear Me Knocking by El Stones Rolling with Blow and the plane taking off.

Most of these are ones I would've said. But I thought it was Beethoven's 5th in A Clockwork Orange. Is I wrong? Also the sped-up Lone Ranger theme from said film.

I was trying to think of songs you could hear on the radio that are forever owned by a scene of a movie.

man Kenny was so cool, now he looks like a Cabbage Patch Kid
this ain't a movie but since sopranos was mentioned, I might as well mutate the thread further to include TV.
Walk the Line - Johnny Cash in The Wire, in that montage with Pres re-writing the board.
Fuckin'A
Thinking about it, there is lots of great songs in The Wire - especially pogues and Body of an American.

It would be a toss-up between The Sopranos and Glee, I suppose.

i want to get the song from the ending montage of season one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIUCbifFL9U) but i'm too lazy to find a pirate copy and it's only available on itunes if you buy the whole soundtrack album. annoying
(edit: spoilers for season one obviously)

Except Gimme Shelter. It also reminds me of Casino. But more than anything, I think I associate it with The Departed. Man, Scorsese likes that song.
