two of my friends had this song as a dance at their engagement party cos they thought it was ironically hilarious cos they enjoyed the chemicals quite a lot, i didnt have the heart to tell them what it was really about. they never got married.

A few years ago I was walking around in a Walgreens drug store and I heard a muzak version of a familiar tune... I kept trying to put the words to it, by the time the second chorus came around i realized what it was,

Weed, Whites and Wine and I'll be 'Willin' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-71e-nV_fY)

Then there is a whole litany of drug music around that era... late 60's early 70's

One of those where they denied that it is about heroin but it is patently obvious that it is about getting smacked up.

On a lighter note: Pass the Dutchie - Musical Youth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFtLONl4cNc). Can't believe these kids got away with this.

Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues (one of the first gangsta songs - the lyrics are like a precursor to Eazy-E)

Cypress Hill - Hits from the Bong (obvious)

The Mitchell Brothers ft. Professor Green - Reservoir Drugs (quite underground but if you can find it, sick concept and lyricism)

Danger Mouse & Jemini - Don't Do Drugs (brilliant song)

Well, at the time I don't think "dutchie" was any kind of a reference to weed. That was a cover of the song Pass The Kutchie by The Mighty Diamonds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOypr3N7SFo), which, incidentally, is a song that refers to smoking weed. Anyway, they took all the cannabis-related lyrics out of the Musical Youth version.

now, i know there has been a few suggested (this one for example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8GbDYeKVZA)) but i kinda expected more hip hop. But is it fair to say that a lot of hip hop tunes just make the odd reference as opposed to being specifically about drug use? What do you hip hop buffs think? Actually, while i think on there are plenty of hip hop tunes that arent really about anything specifically!

I remember seeing a "where are they now?" bit and they had old interview footage of their manager explaining that Dutchie meant poor mans porridge...like Bob sings about in no woman no cry...

mickill
03-19-2010, 02:06 PM
Yeah, but see I was careful to include only songs that do include references to "using" crack. Ten Crack Commandments - despite being one of the best songs about "selling" crack - is more about how to make a successful living as a low level dealer. Dope Man discourages the idea altogether, and generally takes a stance against crack, but also describes people using crack in the lyrics.

So no, you're wrong and I'm right.

well i just think in the case of lennon and knowing what or i know and have read about him is that he had to be a bit careful about referencing stuff like that given the time and perception of his band and he relished in hiding it all a bit. His attitude did change about all that. So i think it was about getting stoned just slightly veiled.

The term crackhead can be interpreted many ways, and doesn't necessarily always have to be used in the literal sense. I've referred to you as such dozens of times, yet I'm not sure you've even tried crack before.

So just for that I'd like to include Hold It Now, Hit It since they do mention sniffing glue in it. And Boyz N The Hood since it samples that line.

That's right, I am going to loose criteria the shit out of this thread.

Fine....but this just opens the door to so many other Beatles/Lennon songs that may or may not have been alluding to drugs, or were inconspicuously doing so: I'm So Tired, Strawberry Fields Forever, Got To Get You Into My Life, Day Tripper, Magical Mystery Tour, Flying etc.

The Hold Steady - Crucifixtion Cruise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2V0HxbZzRU)

halleluiah came to in a confession booth.
infested with infections.
smiling on an abcessed tooth.
running hard on residue.
crashing thru the vestibule.
the crucifixion cruise.
she climbed the cross and found she liked the view.
sat reflecting on the resurrection.
talking loud over lousy connections.
she put her mouth around a difficult question.
she said lord what do you recommend?
to a real sweet girl who's made some not sweet friends.
lord what would you prescribe?
to a real soft girl who's having real hard times.
