Awesome good looks!

I always hit up Record Store Day first thing in the AM.

Hot me a Mike D. turntable slip-mat last year!

Speculation on what the "Super Suprise" is?

I'm guessing a remix of some of the upcoming new album tracks.

So lemme get this str8? You gotta find a store in your area and hope they have 1 / 1,000 of these shits?

I just plugged in my state and up popped a whole bunch of stores. I'm assuming there only a couple of hundred record stores participating so each store will get a few copies of the 1000 shits.

I'll agree with the $Rob$ and say it's a remix of one of the album cuts. That sounds like the most predictable shit.

"And if something is limited, we've listed that here as well. And yeah, most Record Store Day releases are limited. And some of them are super-CRAZY limited. Also, we don't tell a store what to bring in, nor do we sell the pieces ourselves. That is a relationship between store and distributor, and not all stores will have all pieces, and there are probably going to be some pieces that no store has enough of. That's what limited releases are all about. So talk to your favorite store: find out what they will have, tell them what you want."

Seems pretty straightfoward to me.

Also, I for one, like the fact of encouraging people to go out to their record stores to dig for the goodies instead of just being the guy on ebay who got their bid in on it at the last second.
The Grand Royal days of discovering an unknown Beastie colored vinyl rarity at the record store is one of the pure simple pleasures in life.

I'm sure glad the Record Store Day people are doing this.

I am not embarrassed to admit, and I am not looking at the past through rose-colored glasses, when I say it so enjoyable in almost a subtly spiritual way, to be inside a music store (and I'm not talking about the music section at a big-box retailer that also sells washing machines and work socks).

I think it's because unlike the internet, a person is LITERALLY surrounded by music, music they can pick up with their hand and then look at the artwork (especially vinyl) and the list of people who created that music. Then there is the fact that the other people there are doing the same as you i.e. they share at least one similar interest, even if their choice of music is different than yours.

I've also discovered new music I ended up buying because of what was playing over their system, or by talking to an employee since with few exceptions, the music store employees I have encountered love music themselves (maybe that's a prerequisite during the hiring process?) and know from a good, to a lot, about music and the people who make it.

Two stores located here that I like:

Soundwaves (http://soundwaves.com/a/) (also sell skate and surf gear)

Cactus Music (http://digital.thinkindie.com/stores.php?playlist_id=20&ref=3) (inside they have a small stage for the many live performances they host)

Haven't been here for more than a decade but liked it when I was there! Vinal Edge Records (http://www.vinaledge.com/). They sell CDs too btw.

I have no guess as to what it will be, but wouldn't it be fun if instead of releasing 1,000 records that were all the same they released 500 with pellas of say 2 new tracks from HSCP1 (or 2), and 500 with instrumentals from 2 new tracks form HSCP1 (or 2)? Then we could all cut, copy, paste, remix, speculate, and have a general donnybrook over which instrumentals went with what vocals and such. They could even get really fun with it and put together snippets of vocals from multiple tracks as well as instrumentals from various tracks (not even necessarily the same tracks allowing us to put together the entire track, but just something to play with and speculate about). As a vinyl only limited release that could generate buzz / speculation without damaging album sales.

I contacted my record store owner and he told me he'd try to get a copy... but it's not quite like that.

Apparently record stores submit what they'd like from the list of exclusive releases to the organization which is in charge of this whole ordeal. Then... they really don't know what they're getting. Kind of like a lottery or something. So, they might get a copy... they might not. I'll be there regardless but, man, it'd be nice to know if I'd be walking away with an exclusive white label or not.

Damn, dude.

I won't be able to get one. :( I'm glad that some of you did!!!!

Two of my stores got no copies and the big store got two or three. I was in line there early but not early enough. I watched other people carry them off. My fault. I didn't take it seriously enough. If I was going to wait around for an hour, I should have been willing to wait around for a few hours.

When it came to the other stuff on offer, i have to say that the whole thing was a large disappointment. There are stores on that list of participants that barely sell any vinyl on a normal day. And they have almost no music selection period. They're full of non-music merchandise like hoodies. Those stores got a few Panera albums but they're theoretically participating. What's the point of that? The big store had more vinyl, but not enough to justify having 300 people line up. I've done better getting limited edition music on a normal Saturday.

prof_d_boiz
04-17-2010, 12:35 PM
I was one of the lucky ones who was able to snag a copy.

I ended up visiting 4 stores in about a half hour before I found it though. It was walk in, ask if they had it, and walk out.

When I walked into the final store, I saw it sitting on the counter. Then the guy in front of me picks it up and buys it. I literally screamed out "NOOOOOOOOOO!" Luckily they had one more copy, which I quickly purchased before anyone else could get their hands on it.

I want to leave mine unopened so I will defer to the other folks as far as what is on it. However, it came in a plain white sleeve. The vinyl sleeves each have Beastie Boys written in the Too Many Rappers font. That's it.

Well, hope some other folks were equally successful. It definitely made for an exciting morning!

RobMoney$
04-17-2010, 12:46 PM
Yeah, I got to the shop around 8am. First in line.
The next person to show up was the Mirmanee of the Bruce Springsteen fans.
I was forced to listen to how much of a Bruce fan she was, and how great of a person he is, and the shows she's been to, and how she's been following him for over 30 years but has never met him, and how her and her friends use to park in front of his house hoping to catch a glimpse of him, and blah, blah, blah, for the next two hours until the store finally opened.

Had around a dozen or so people in the que by the time they opened the doors. I grabbed everything I wanted and went to the counter where they had the Springsteen album behind the counter. The Manager told me he was keeping it back there because he knew if he put it on the shelf things could get violent. He was right.
I watched a 50something year old guy throw a complete temper tantrum in the middle of a store full of customers and staff because he was 3rd in line and didn't get a copy.
The manager just laughed in the guys face and walked away from him.
Told him "We made no promises to anyone that anything would be available".

Sorry about your damn luck.

They did limit each customer to one copy of each album, which was cool. I grabbed the Springsteen single for Miramanee and she grabbed a copy of the Beasties album for me and we traded outside after we left. So I was able to walk away with two copies.

Rob, did your store open at 9 or 10? My first store opened at 9 and I was there at around 8:15. I was about 60th in line, so I knew all hope was lost. From where I was standing, I could see the Beasties LPs, so at least I knew when they were gone and I didn't have to wait around for my turn in line.

I thought about it last night. I figured that there was a chance I'd have to be in line by 6 or 7 a.m. at the big store to have a chance but I decided it wasn't worth it. If it had been concert tickets, I'd have been there at 2 a.m. :p

I called every store that was on the website participating in GA. Only one (122 miles away) said they had it. I left at 5:30 AM with my son. We got there at 8:10 and were first in line. I had called the store owner last night and he said he had 2 copies. There was a sign on the door that said only 1 copy per customer between 11-2. Store opened at 11:00 I got their only 2 copies. On the way home we started calling other stores to see if they had any. Only one (out of 6 or 7) said they had it, but by the time we got there it was sold out.

Another dude showed up around 9:45 and knew the third guy in line. He was giving him cash to pick up the Beastie Boys 12". I feel bad for snatching both copies, but I knew a lot of other fans that couldn't show up at 8 AM (yes I am that dork) that I could send it to.

Ha ha. That's how it normally is here. No one bought any of the Beastie rereleases or the single. They only got a few at my store and I never had trouble. I think that people in my line were buying them for resale. This record store day event is bullshit I tell you! :p

It costs less than $10. I'm not a hog but if a special record is that cheap, then I'd buy one to play and one to keep safe. I have multiple copies of most Beastie vinyl.

(My store only allowed people to buy one but it didn't matter when there were so many people in line.)

I don't do it for most artists -- just for a few that I really collect. Honestly, part of the fun of collecting Beastie stuff is that they do interesting things with their vinyl releases. For most bands, I just buy the one copy that I'm going to listen to. I'm not mentally ill. :p

I take it you didn't hang out with your dad much? I still like hardware stores because I spent so much time with my dad in them. I saved some of my dad's tools just because.

I'm guessing that given his dad's collection, he knows what LPs are for.

I called the record store yesterday and the dude put it on hold for me because I was the only one who called. So I went out there today and copped that and over 50 soul and rock records from the late 60s to early 70s. The had "On Wine" with Peter Sichel for $1. I also copped a sealed old stock copy of Metallica And Justice for All. Everything was 20% off. It's been a while since I walked out of the record store with a crate of vinyl.

I tried the only record store in the province participating in RSD and they didn't have it. The next closest store is about 2000kms away. And according to a post above, its not much odds because there are none in Canada anyway.

I envy those who got 2+ copies.

I see them on ebay for crazy asking prices...will anyone actually spend $100 on it?? I'd pay someone $25-30 because I wouldn't mind having it for my collection. But $100 is nuts. I wouldn't give someone the satisfaction of making money off it anyway.

Store opened at 11:00 I got their only 2 copies. On the way home we started calling other stores to see if they had any. Only one (out of 6 or 7) said they had it, but by the time we got there it was sold out.
I feel bad for snatching both copies, but I knew a lot of other fans that couldn't show up at 8 AM (yes I am that dork) that I could send it to.

Moyer: 6 innings, 7 strikeouts, 1 BB, 5 earned runs.

I know he gave up 5 in the first inning, but he settled in just like he always does and wound up giving a solid performance by the time his night was finished.
And most of the hits he gave up in the first were all ground balls that just found a hole through the infield. In other words, just lucky hits.
All I'm saying is, he's better than Kendrick, and that line is actually better than what Hamels has been giving you lately.

They didn't lose tonight because of Moyer. This team is supposed to score more than 5 runs every game.
They lost because Ricky Nolasco shut them down.

So I wake up semi-early for a Saturday...

Shop No. 1
Headed to a shop that's about 25 or so miles away, then I remember a local shop that's also listed on the site. I get there right at 10am, and the guy is just unlocking the door and I'm the only one waiting. He tells me that this is the third year in a row that people have come in looking for "Record Store Day" releases. He looks inside a small box behind the counter and finds a few "Record Store Day" sampler CD's, he gives me one. He tries to call the owner and ask him but can't get him, he takes down my name and number just in case, and wishes me luck.

Shop No. 2
These guys are pros, they have an in-store later in the day with the chick from OTEP, flyers everywhere, a freebies table outside for people who buy anything, etc etc, All of the RSD day releases are in the front of the store, I walk in and in 30 seconds spot 2 White Labels and in 5 mins. I'm on my way out. (I promise to not keep BOTH of them for myself, one will likely end up as a contest prize)

Shop No. 3
Walk in to the closet sized shop, look around for like 5 mins looking for anything RSD looking, nothing, ask the kid at the counter, he doesn't know what the hell I'm talking about, says he'll ask the manager, I follow him to the back of the store where he ducks behind the curtain says "Some guy is out here asking about RSD" Manager says "Tell him we sold everything already" I leave.

I'm thinking that shop No. 3 is the type of shop that probably got stuff, but would have told the first person in the door it had already sold out, and e-bay'd it all, and was enjoying a little increase in traffic due to being listed on the site. I bought nothing from them.

OH, and I read people were paying like $8 for this... My shop charged me $19.99 each, but today was 10% off, so I still payed $20 with no tax. The too many Rappers single was $6.99 at the same shop. I think they bumped up the price for today.

Situation in Europe, especially Germoney, was worst. First, in my hometown (Leipzig, half million people 'big') was not even one store participating on RSD, only a few did in GER. Second, I saw a list of RSD releases planned for Europe/UK, the Beasties were not on it. I've emailed a shop in Berlin some weeks ago, they said there is barely a chance, so today (Monday) I will see.

Like some of you, I checked ebay and saw the $100 offers for the BB 12", other RSD releases are offered for $500. So if the intention of the RSD was to get people be aware of the local indepentend record stores then the event propably failed.

But good to know that the price in the US was around $6. Congrats to all who got one (or more)!

I live right around the corner from Freakbeat, and not anticipating much of a line, arrived by bike at 10:50. There were about 30 people in front of me in line, and by the time I got into the store, they told me their one copy was gone. Picked a few other things up, then headed over to Amoeba, where I arrived at noon, and couldn't find the white label there either. Oh well.

True that... Knowing that my shop more than doubled the price of other shops $20 each, really made me feel like they appreciated my support for getting my ass out of bed early and supporting local record stores. Feeling like my local screwed me on a day that was supposed to be all about support kinda puts a damper on the whole event for me. Yeah it's only $20, but knowing that others payed less than $10.... I've looked on Ebay and I'm not spending 75 - 100. I'd do 20 though.

This is a small city and I spend my saturdays working at a local "CD" shop that is part of an instrument/home theater store. We don't sell records but can order them . The guy at my store that does all the ordering, what little cd sales we do because cd's are dead, had no clue about record store day. Maybe because we are a cd store?

Those eBay prices are going to come down. There are a ton on eBay and not many willing to buy at those insane prices. In fact, if you pay those crazy prices you're just encouraging the insanity. Wait a few weeks and the prices will get more reasonable. There are more people buying the record to flip it than there are who bought it to listen to it. The same thing happened last year with a lot of the other record store day records. Just be patient.

I agree to a point. RSD is still a good idea though I'm sure they get a lot of people going in just to pick up limited releases and then sell them for a profit on the bay. My local store was really busy all day so I think it worked for them.

Problem is, the Beasties release was not available in the UK so the only way I'm gonna get a copy is to buy from one of these people.....

I agree. Does anyone know if the organisers give guidline retail prices to the participating stores?
Perhaps they should have an email address where you can comment on what stores charged over the top prices. They could then contact individual stores and threaten to take them off the 'list'.
RSD should be about raising awareness of local independent stores - it shouldn't just be a ticket for them to make huge profits for a day.

Why not ask the owner or manager why the prices were so high, directly?

If you don't like the answer, don't buy from them anymore. Give your business to someone else.
Encourage your family and friends to do the same.
The idea being that they'll either eventually change their ways or go out of business.
Basic capitalism.

And tell the store management that you'll be doing so, so they have an idea that they have unhappy customers and exactly what they need to change.
