I have to hire two student workers and I am conducting the interviews. It's my first time being the interviewer.
I think I may have a little bit of a soft heart and I think it's because they are young students. I am so sad that there will be at least three or four students I will have to say no to. I will of course say something professional and kind upon sending the rejections but still. I rather say "I'm sorry, you'll be great at another job somewhere else I promise. Keep trying!" then give them a big hug.
But that's not very professional of me.

You think this is hard...Parkey had to interview Jay-Z. Imagine the pressure there.
What if they all truly suck and you don't want to hire any of them?
Go in with that attitude and you'll make it easier turning them down.

haha!
I just got done with another interview. The last interview on my calendar is in a few hours.
They are all are nice, well meaning kids so far. :(
Maybe the last one will help since over the phone he was a little abrupt. If he's an ass I won't feel bad.

Oh and I still have to check references late today or early tomorrow so that should help to. I can see if they are faking the nice, innocent, sweet face for me or if they are legit. :)
I really hope I hear bad things from at least one reference to help make this easier.

From my own experiences, I've actually had a harder time with interviewing people for a job than with firing them.
You probably won't get a lot of help from the references either. Most people who aren't complete idiots are pretty careful with who they put down as references and/or have a friend talk them up. I've helped my brother get at least 3 jobs while pretending to be a former employer who really wished he could have afforded to pay him what he was worth but couldn't and had to settle for workers who basically sucked balls compared to him.

mickill, these kids are fresh high school graduates. I'm hoping their not that advanced in their trickery yet, as far as a PT job through school is concerned. :p

Don't forget, professionally I think there's a prohibition on bad reviews from references.
My uncle hired a guy to a managerial position who was a known crack addict and had swindled several establishments, but none of them could tell him anything when he called.
Um, I'm sure this is not related at all - but you know, references are crap. Good luck! (y)

You should end every interview with the question,
"so.......... buttsex?"
"So I see from your application you ticked neither pink or brown..."
