I'm getting new awesome bullhorn handlebars for my bike: http://www.bikeman.com/store/graphics/00000001/Alt-BTI/BTI-SF1350.jpg

and I currently have drop bars with front brake levers and cross top levers. I never use the front levers. I'm wondering how I can transfer the cross top levers to the new handlebars, but get rid of the front levers (they won't fit anyway)?

I should probably ask this in a bike forum. Just thought I'd throw it out there. I'm having trouble finding an actual brake tutorial online. If anyone's bored and wants to look up bike stuff, have at it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

sincerely,
Dorothy Wood

I would love to help but I don't actually even know how to change my own tire. :(

If you was in Sheffield I'd tell you to go to JE James Cycles and they'd probably do for about £10 plus any parts needed.

I'm sure it all could be done, but dunno how. I want a new bike though, the three I have I don't like.

you're gonna need new brake levers probably

if you're talking about what i think you are. the part of the brake lever that goes in front of the drop down bars is the main part of the brake lever. that part hat goes across the handbars is just a basic bit that pushes on the levers that go infront of the bars.

from what i remember you always had old school ten speeds

the cross lever just basically pushes on the drop down lever. the drop down lever is vital.

oh shit. you're gonna have to copy paste that link.

nah, I got a new bike last spring: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41%2B60vRArsL.jpg

I got a new stem because the one on my bike is hella long and I think I'd be more comfortable with the bars a bit closer. And the handlebars just look huge to me, so I wanted a sleeker profile.

the brake situation is like this: http://www.getprice.com.au/images/uploadimg/767/350__1_cane-creek-crosstop.jpg

I know it's definitely possible to do, I just don't want to do it wrong.

if you're bike is setup how i think it is you're gonna need something like these

http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/products/mountain/Alivio/product.-code-BL-M420.-type-.html

shouldn't have much of a problem finding them and they're fairly inexpensive

the only thing im not sure of is if they'll work 100 percent with road bike brakes or if they'll get by the curves in the handle bars when you try to slide them into place.

so does that cable go from teh cross levers to teh drop levers under the bar wrap?

yep, the cable is connected. it originally had just the front levers, but I had the cross tops put in when I bought the bike.

im not too familiar with road bikes and their wacky brakes. but it looks as if the the actualy brake cable is anchored to the drop down brakes and the cable passes through the cross brake. when you pull the cross brake it looks as if it presses on the cable HOUSING. if that's the case the drop down brakes are still vital and need to be in place.

well, the cross tops push the housing away from the cable while it is indeed anchored by the drop levers. I just figured I could cut the cable and anchor it on the other side of the cross tops instead. It's got that little ball thing on the end though, and I'm guessing you can't really transfer it.

Thanks for trying, I think I might just have to give up and take it to a bike shop. I probably have to get levers that are made to work independently.

blrrgh. I want to take a bike building/repair class.

all you'd need is new levers which are relatively inexpensive and you might be able to salvage the cables and housings. if you can find a suitable brake lever it's a simble job.

yeah, I'd just have to shorten the cables and put new caps. no big deal. the internet says I can use my dremel to saw the cable.

cool, thanks for the input dude.

we have a place here that has a full repair shop that you can use for free anytime its open. and usually there are people around who will help you. the only catch is they try and make you come and volunteer to help other people in exchange for the help you get.

apparently you can build your own bike there from the parts they have if you volunteer enough...
