So I went on an iTunes binge yesterday and downloaded (among other things) some songs that I remember from high school in the early 90s.
Long Day in the Universe - The Darling Buds
The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead - XTC
Lucky - Bif Naked
All I Want/Walk on the Ocean - Toad the Wet Sprocket
For others of you now entering your 30s, can you think of others?
Some of my faves all 90's but not all early 90's:
The Presidents of the United States of America - Lump
Deftones - My Own Summer (Shove It) or Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
EMF - Unbelievable
Ugly Kid Joe - Everything About You
Weezer - Buddy Holly
Cypress Hill - Insane In The Brain
Beck - Loser
Radiohead - Karma Police
Nirvana - Lithium
Incubus - Pardon me
Manic Street Preachers - A Design for Life
Beastie - Root down

I can think of loads, but unfortunately I'm not entering my thirties so I can't say what they are.

My favorite single of the '90's is the Verve "Bitter Sweet Symphony" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx3m4e45bTo&feature=fvw).
with a special nod to '60's and The Andrew Oldham Orchestra (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpbjRYtdavQ)

When you throw in the '60's track backing from Oldham "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is the earliest of the '90's singles.

I didn't even know they were going to be there, how did I miss that? I know they'll be at Sasquatch.
I work Monday night, but I'm on the TM page right now with the 4 minute timer ticking and two tickets for $58 sitting there. Was this just announced?

No, I happened to catch it in one of the email updates I get from Ticketassholes/Live Nation/Ticket Web/Brown paper tickets.
I have class but I think I can go after. It says doors at 8 but they won't start til like 9 at the earliest, right? Can you tell if they have an opener?

Happy Mondays - Step On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG9QrWkcV5I)

James - Sit down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRD51qEJ8t4)Yes I know it was originally released in '89 - shush.
James - Laid might have been a good one, not familiar with this song.
Blur - Parklife (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIEsmGzo2UE)
This is ringing bells, I am not sure why. I'll have to pull it up when I get home and deem it worthy or unworthy of download.

Highly Canadian-centric and from the mid-late portion of the decade, sorry!
Say what you will about Our Lady Peace but you couldn't get away from their fucking songs in the 90s up here, shit was everrrrywhere:
Naveed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG4KnYSaLZw)
Rusty:
wake me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyn5l8hvPjw&feature=related)

Coax Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mnLF6c8bLA)
Thrush Hermit:
French Inhale (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkN-PDSh74A)

Hip Club Groove:
Shootin' the gift (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xujn15U4Z1k)
My brother had a snowboarding mix tape with this song on it, straight up hooked:

This was the "single" of that album though:
Northern Touch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD1V4kUKGX4&feature=related)

GOB:
Soda (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pc8xutlcwY)
I have this music video in my head and I cant for the life of me remember the band or the song but the video concept had a boy stuck in a room with only girls toys or something and there were scientists (etc) watching his actions from above, anybody know????

I can only remember liking anything that wasn't a single around that time, listening to so much different stuff, from Hawkwind to MBV to Rudi Peni and all that's inbetween.
Most of what Freebasser put up like Fool's Gold and that are the only early 90's singles i can remember being into. But i'll probably remember loads more once i wake up a bit.

It's hard to think of just one or two hit wonders from the early nineties, but I tried to stick with those specifications. A few of these are kinda more mid-nineties. And I guess that some of these guys have pretty vast catalogs, but they're still only known for one or two songs in the mainstream:

High five to ndoz. Wasn't there another one out about the same time as this one, 95ish or something about a shy guy or something? I remember dancing to them both at a frat party when I was a freshman in college.
Speaking of top 40 R&B hits, there's another one I like a lot called Romeo and Juliet, I think it was Sylk E. Fyne or something ridiculous like that. For years I thought it was Lil Kim. Love that shit.

It's weird, but I remember the 90s as a pretty bad time for rock in the mainstream. There was some REALLY good stuff in the early 90s, but thinking back to all the crap that came out back then still annoys the piss out of me. In the early 90's Nirvana did a great job at killing a lot of the metal ballads that stank up the airways but by 94 even grunge was getting ruined. The grunge ballad? Noooooooo! And everything turned from rocking into these slow introspective bore-fests. If I have to hear "Black Hole Sun" one more time I'm going to kill myself. And Soundgarden was good! It's just that when grunge and alternative got mainstream it quickly started to suck, hard. There were entire bands doing coypcat styles like "Live" and "Bush". On the other hand, there was some really good stuff getting major rotation (some of which has already been mentioned). Here's some major rotation stuff people might havn't mentioned yet:
Frank Black "Los Angeles"
Helmet "Meantime"
Primus "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver"
Pantera "Walk"
Hip Hop, on the other hand, was killing it in the early 90s
Del "Mistadobolina"
Organized Konfusion "Stress"
Tribe Called Quest "Scenario"
WU TANG!

There was another one, I thought it was Taylor Dayne but it seems it was not, might have been late 80s. The lyrics were like, I don't wanna fall in love, love is just like the night, something like that. Maybe Jodie Watley?

I don't think the song was big at all. They definitely weren't anywhere near as known here as they were in the UK. But there was an audience for that kinda music. Was it considered shoegaze?
