Whats the worst that can happen with someone hacking into your email?

some dumb bitch did that to me today. i got duped ill admit it. but i ended up finding this out no more than 5 hours later but is there any real harm that could have been caused?

signing up for stuff, or getting other information?

i guess if you've ever had any passwords sent to your e-mail address (or if she figured out what your password was and you use that password for other things as well) then who knows what's compromised. paypal or bank accounts or something? i dunno. what exactly happened?

i had just gotten a new credit card previous to this that i have not used to buy anything online yet.

changed my email and online banking passwords immediately.

nothing else that i can really think of.



ok heres the story...

a girl friended me about a month ago. i usually never accept people i dont know especially good looking girls bc they (as bob has found out) are usually bots (which ironically i had not been friend requested by a bot until bobs thread about one). the only mutual friend we have in common is my girlfriend. so i ask her and she says shes some friend of a friend and so i was like whatever.

side story: (in hindsight she turned out to be a different girl and my gf doesnt even know who she is. which really pisses me off bc i would have not accepted her friending had it not been from my gf. who just accepts ANYONE bc she wants to get to 1,000 people on there. i got really pissed off today and told her to cut that fucking shit out. and its fucking stupid to give creeps a window into your life for a stupid fucking friend count that means nothing) back to the story...

so she fb chats me and asks me for my yahoo id/email. i found this to be very odd. and ask "um do i know you?", she responds yea through XXXX (a nickname of my gf, which was part of what sucked me in). so then im like "what do you want it for?" she says "i want to send you something about barca" i say "the soccer team barcalona?" she says yea and then something about them having a hard time next week against deportevo (another spanish soccer team, which suprised me that she knew this and sucked me in even more). so then shes just bs'ing me and chatting me up and got to where i grew up and what not and asked where my parents grew up and where they were born. then some more bs'ing, and finally i had enough and was just like i gotta go.

so fast forward 6 hours or so i go to check my email and i cant get in, thinking i had just typed my password wrong. so then i do it again perfect and it doesnt work and immediately i think of this cunt. and i remember one of my security questions was my fathers place of birth...which i had told her hours earlier. so i immediately changed my password for my email and my security questions.

i had over 2000 emails of just bullshit, i never delete anything. but i cant be for sure if there was any pertinent bits of information in any of them :( but i hope not.

is there anything else she could have some how done to violate me?




(!)this is also a good learning lesson in not accepting people you dont know on facebook, or getting into a strangers car. and also dont give out information like a dumbass to people you dont know over the internet. (ya im a idiot for this one, lets move forward)

Are you using Gmail?

If so, click on "settings" top right and then at the bottom there is a link "last account activity", click it and it'll list your activity on the account. Click each one further and you can narrow down using the IP to where the hack came from by searching google and even google maps where the exchange is. Although the exchange might not be close to who hacked it if they used a proxy server or roaming web (like 3G or something).

You could further investigate and start a witch hunt on those who might have it in for you nearby.

But yeah, all you can really do is change passwords, anything that is linked or is the same password as your email - change that to and keep a closer eye for any suspect activity over the next couple of weeks.

It just seems she has gone to some lengths to get that info and knew a bit about you in order to extract the info that you might have pissed her off somehow.
