Not upside down yet. She has an ulcer on her side and her fins are fraying. And she looks decidedly un-peppy.

Well you know, I'm not suicidal, or anything -it is just a goldfish, after all. But I like her, and she's my daughter's first pet, so it's just a bit of a drag.

I read some stuff on the internetz about how to help her and so she's in a mild salt solution bath now, and I had to (try to) put some Neosporin on her sore. Yeah, putting ointment on a fish, THAT was easy. :rolleyes:

Sorry about your fish. Goldfish are very easy to keep and not shy around humans. So are betas but they are aggressive towards other fish.

You may know this but I always put a teaspoon of aquarium salt per five gallons of water in a freshwater tank.

When I kept a 110 gal. aquarium, I had two goldfish that grew to six inches in length over three years.

Large aquariums are a lot of maintenance and expense, though.

How's the kid taking it?

She's OK actually. She didn't really get upset or anything, I guess I had prepared her reasonably well for the possibility and so it wasn't too much of a shock. A little later in the day she said to me "I'm feeling sad about Penelope" and I told I felt a bit sad too, but that unfortunately fish aren't as strong as people so when they get sick it is much harder for them to get better.

And then yesterday we went to a local park that has a goldfish pond where you pay 20 kuai for 30 minutes of fishing and can keep whatever you catch, so we caught 3 more, so she's happy enough.
