A couple of weeks back he announced that the whole "Relapse 2" idea had been officially scrapped. Which is good. Vocals-wise, I think he wants to take a step backwards...possibly in the right direction. And I'm glad he's planning on working with producers other than Dre, himself, and Mr. Porter. DJ Khalil, Just Blaze, and Jim Jonsin have officially contributed beats/breaths of fresh air.
And it looks like the album is coming sooner than expected. The first single, Not Afraid, drops on Friday, apparently.

Me three. By the sounds of it he's going back to the 2004 sound, getting all stream of consciousness and "deep". Which is not a good look for Em, Relapse was a great album because he managed to eschew all the pretentious and self-absorbed delusional shit by taking a bit of time out of the limelight. If he slips back into it it will be the most frustrating near-comeback I care to remember.

This isn't about Encore. Encore was shit. He was fucking high at the time.
This is about all the guest stuff that's out there right now and the upcoming RECOVERY album stuff that's been leaked.
If you think the jam Mike posted, the Despicible Freestyle, The Mariah/Nick dis song, or any of the guest stuff like Drop the World or Airplanes II is weak then your opinion on what is good hip hop is what's wrong, because it ain't Em's flow, delivery, or content.
He's back.
bitchin' about his accent should be like this or that, and then you post some dude rapping who sounds like he's gonna fall asleep anyminute and can't keep on time with the beat if he had a stopwatch? please.
...he's not rapping with any accent anymore, that's his voice.

I respect your opinion on hip hop, Paddy. Kid P too.
I just can't understand why you & KP don't hear what I'm hearing.

06-06-2010, 10:39 PM
It's not, that's the point. Even his average material back then was sick. His first 2 albums (3 if you count Infinite) were some of the best hip-hop I've ever heard. This shit most definitely aint.
Opinions are like assholes.

06-06-2010, 11:46 PM
His flow was actually pretty corny in his Infinite days. He sounded like Ahmad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SVgTeHhpsYM), but with better lyrics.
As for the Pink collab, it's just nothing special. Going by his own past strong singles (The Way I Am, Stan, Guilty Conscience etc.), this pales in comparison. It reminded me of Jay-Z's 'Oh My God'. And Khalil's had much better beats.
Lex Diamonds
06-06-2010, 11:47 PM
Everyone moves on, doesn't mean that poor new music becomes better than older music. That's a terrible misconception that a lot of hip-hop heads hold. "Hotness" does not equal greatness.
Sure it's nice that Eminem's trying again but nonetheless, he's nothing on 2001 Em. Embarassingly so.

Well, technically he's a "better" rapper now than he was in his Slim Shady years. He locks in with the beat now, as evidenced by the way he stays on top of the beat on Won't Back Down despite the semi-irregular cadence. Also, by the time he made Eminem Show he was layering like 5 tracks of vocals in different pitches for a lot of his verses. It was almost just too perfect. I liked that he kind of went back to a dryer sound on Relapse. And he seems to still be doing that.
I like his verse on Forever better than anything else he's done since. That was probably a top 5 moment for him. I was kind of hoping he'd stay on that vibe for Recovery. But that's not about him being better or worse, it's just preference.

I'm far from that. I'll happily rate a later album over one of a band's "classics" (I prefer Be Here Now to What's The Story (Morning Glory) for example), all I'm trying to say here is that while this music is decent enough, it's not great and it's disappointing for someone who's followed Em's career through and saw some hope in Relapse. Yes he's still technical and can flow but the creativity's not there, he's repeating words a lot (which isn't rhyming) and just generally a lot less sharp and adept at getting out messages and evoking emotions.
Like Mike said it's all preference. and I prefer old Em so much I'd rather listen to that again than this new shit I've heard so far.

That's all art is really.
Give me a choice and my preference would be the baggy white t-shirt, bleach blonde Eminem of the Marshall Maters LP and The Eminem Show, but I think his current stuff thats out there now is some of his best work in years and I'm excited to hear the new album when it drops.
And the album has no skits which means he's at least going to try to NOT make MMLP, Eminem Show, Encore, ect yet again.

Gave it a second listen. My verdict:
1. Cold Wind Blows......................excellent opening track - 9/10
2. Talkin’ 2 Myself f. Kobe.............not feeling dude's singing at all, but the beat/Em's vocals save it- 7.5/10
3. On Fire..................................one of the better moments, hook's kinda boring - 7.5/10
4. Won’t Back Down f. Pink...........still think it's okay...kinda growing on me - 7.5/10
5. W.T.P...................................beat is weak, concept is alright, nothing great - 5.5/10
6. Going Through Changes...........like the Sabbath sample and the verses, drum beat sounds a lot like Lose Yourself to me - 7/10
7. Not Afraid.............................I'm just glad he skipped the cornball 1st single this time around and went straight to the "serious" song - 6/10
8. Seduction............................it's funny how Em never really brags like this, but I can't really take the playboy Marshall thing seriously - 6/10
9. No Love f. Lil Wayne...............this is a guilty pleasure - 8/10
10. Space Bound.......................this is totally the same chord progression as Hotel California with a few changes......still like it, though - 8.5/10
11. Cinderella Man.....................the singing knocks it down a couple of notches for me....it's like a weak sequel to Till I Collapse - 6.5/10
12. 25 to Life...........................not really the kind of music grown men should make - 6/10
13. So Bad..............................wish the album had more of these kinds of beats, but still not feeling the player schtick - 8/10
14. Almost Famous....................another strong moment - 8.5/10
15. Love the Way You Lie f. Rihanna....I really feel like this shit has been covered enough times throughout the album.....kinda ehhh - 6/10
16. You’re Never Over.................Again, retreading familiar ground, but with the addition of possibly one of Em's most embarrassing hooks ever - 4/10
17. Bonus track.........................I don't know what this song is about, but he seems to be directing it towards a female of some sort again....nice beat - 7/10
Overall, I'm glad he knocked the shock tactics off, didn't rely on too many dated pop culture references, and kept the murder count relatively low. I could hear the accents slipping out here and there, but all in all he sounds like himself again. There may be one too many corny moments for me, though. And it gets repetitive towards the end. Also would have been nice if he'd have let Alchemist contribute something.

There's a ton of singles on this record.
Talkin 2 Myself was a refreshing dose of honesty...

Encore I was on drugs
Relapse I was flushin em out

Got somethin to prove to fans

Why?
Because art is subjective- that album just means more to me in terms of my memories of listening to it etc. I prefer the psychedelic lyrics to the coke-addled braggadocio of WTS. Don't get me wrong, it's still one of my favourite albums and I admit I probably listen to it more often.
I'm not saying I've given up on Em, just that it looks to me like in a year's time I'll still be bumping SSLP & MMLP a lot more than anything he's putting out now.
Gonna listen to Recovery now, cheers for the link. From you people's reviews I'm thinking I might like it so let's see. Like Rob said art is completely subjective to the beholder so this is all really a waste of time anyway.

Cold Wind Blows is probably my favourite cut. I'm actually warming up to Not Afraid, but only if it comes on and I haven't realised I'm up to it and can't be bothered skipping it.

So you all downloaded this someplace? I apparently won't be able to hear it for weeks yet.
I went to the record store over the weekend and was pissed off that so many albums people have been talking about haven't been released. :(

1. Cold Wind Blows......................reminds me of the first time I heard Naughty by Nature's s/t, almost perfect minus the aquaman - human torch line - 9.5/10
2. Talkin’ 2 Myself f. Kobe.............I wanted to hate on the singing and the beat and the rhymes so bad, but it really works with the concept, quite the pop sensibility going on and an interesting albeit utterly swaggerless performance - 8.5/10
3. On Fire..................................Quite like this too, it's sort of funny, the stuff about firetrucks and shit, overall concept seems like a good 'reset' song for dude, decent beat - 7/10
4. Won’t Back Down f. Pink...........it's definitely improved, but lots of clumsy lines abound - 7/10
5. W.T.P...................................Haven't listened to it beyond the first verse yet a single time tbh lol - 3/10
6. Going Through Changes...........singing along with Ozzy for the loss. I went through mad changes, too. It was puberty - 5.5/10
7. Not Afraid.............................It's kind of a shitty 808 knock-off of 'Get By' but I will admit it has some value as an uplifting tune, and I definitely think it's better than a post-curry dump - 7/10
8. Seduction............................worth it just for the friendly Jigga shots haha, actually one of my favourite tracks, I like the beat and the sensible levels of mucking around - 8/10
9. No Love f. Lil Wayne...............actually was sort of hoping for a beat of note, the em verse is a bit of a clusterfuck that channels 'Forever' without improving on it, I enjoyed Weezy though. I like it but I'm annoyed it's not better - 7/10
10. Space Bound.......................the guitar shit mickill was talking about is spot on. It feels like a Whitey Ford jawn. Except rapped by an emotionally frail 37 year old with mother issues. Not a good thing, but the performance is decent - 6.6/10
11. Cinderella Man.....................unlike 'Til I collapse' this doesn't have the 2002 dramachord progression that was all over ems shit at that time. And the singing on this reaally elevates an already pretty freeform lyrical spazz-out. This is actually a legit highlight for me, cause it's not as overtly formulaic as its progenitor - 9/10
12. 25 to Life...........................If hell has public toilets, the janitors would whistle this hook, and the song is not my cup of Postum at all - 2/10
13. So Bad..............................Just enough of the Aftermath feel which is conspicuous by its absence at this point. Well placed in the tracklist, content is blah blah but it's a solid track - 8/10
14. Almost Famous....................yeah bangin - 8.5/10
15. Love the Way You Lie f. Rihanna....I've listened to more of this song than I have of W.T.P, which costs this song a point in comparison. Somebody out there probably likes it - 2/10
16. You’re Never Over.................the cat has had a house guest recently, and she's gotten really good at dealing with people as a result. I'm quite proud of her for it - 4/10
17. Bonus track.........................Havoc. Like Mobb Deep Havoc? Shit. It's not a bad track. I guess. I suppose I've come this far, it's an ok song, better than the last two aborted fetuses - 6.5/10
My scores are based on my own strange tastes, and I'm no authority on anything. I'm about as hip-hop as sex with a relative.
I still think Relapse is better, almost out of spite now for how often dude shits on it on this record. This many albums in you can't really keep doing the same old, and there is a nobility in hearing him rhyme about Proof for sure.
On the whole this is quite a remarkable album though, and I think it will reach that younger generation or whatever, definitely gonna get a grammy or some shit. Some new ideas for dude, and that's a good thing in itself, even if a few of them are fucking embarassing.
If Encore was a 4 and Relapse was an 8, then this is a 7, I guess.
EDITS: Lot of similes and metaphors and all that entedre shit on here. Weird.

OK cheers guys.
Word has it that 25 to Life is about hip-hop. Take from that what you want. It's only a matter of time before he gets the whole overarching 'metaphors' thing that Clipse got about their crack rhymes, which would be funny.
